NY chicken lover!!!!

I see their are quite a few NY Chicken Lovers and some close to me I am in Ava NY just outside of Boonville NY home and am about 15 miles North or Rome NY. If anyone near me has any laying hens they would like to part with I am looking for some right now I have babies who aren't laying and would really like some eggs now. Chicks I have are Buff Orpingtons, Black Cochin, White Cochin, Aracauna, Red Star, Black Star, Blue Andalusian, Partridge Rock, Dark Cornish, Speckled Sussex, Black Australorp, and Columbian Wyandotte ended up with a mixture. I have 50 acres so lots of land to build coops on.

Welcome Nutty! I know exactly where you are as I grew up in Boonville. Small world. Used to ride my bike with my friend from our house to ava and back all summer long. Thats quite a mix you have going there. I am jealous of all the land you have to build coops! I need that much for all the different breeds I want! lol

I can't imagine keeping up on those gardens. I have enough just keeping a one family size garden cared for and this year I'm due at harvest time. Weeds like thistle and burdock to name a couple seem to be the main crops here. We have a lot of nettles too.

You need to mulch. I use cardboard boxes I get from the school. Save all your chicken cleanings. Water deep, lay the cardboard down and then cover it with chicken cleanings. Never , never , never use a roto tiller to weed. Of course you and use grass clippings, straw, hay or compost for mulch or a combination.

And of course you can do raised beds.

I have a really crappy back and this machine can be used all day long without bothering my back. It weights around 600 lbs. Let the machine do the work and just walk behind it and steer. Easy peasy

I honestly think some folks hate gardening cuz they're doing it all wrong. There are lots of good ideas out there and you just find the one that works for you. I could never do all you do without that machine.

my granfather worked in a paper mill for years making cardboard. If you had any idea of the toxins involved with cardboard you would never eat any of your vegetables. Just because cardboard starts as a tree doesn't make it natural or safe

Lynzi, your pics have been very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

I hope to get a few more photo's of the fast-growing girls up soon. Meanwhile, they are all doing quite well. Still can't wait to integrate the biggies and littles, but it's not quite time yet. I am thinking of some supervised time in the pen in about a week and based on how that goes, I'll take it from there. Meanwhile, I make it work.

The Brabanter goes absolutely nuts when the big girls come in from the pen and fly up to their roosts. She gets so excited watching them. It's so cute -- like a little kid wanting to copy the bigger kids. I imagine she'll be very quick to join them, when the time is right.


I HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING ROOSTING POLES:

I sanded down 2 x 4's so that they are nice and smooth with rounded edges. We placed them "skinny side up" in the mounting brackets on the coop wall.

My question is this -- should they be flat side up instead? The ladies seem a bit wobbly, at least while they are settling in.

WOW - those are some impressive tracts of land for extensive gardens.

Must be a great feeling to be self-sufficient like that.
