NY chicken lover!!!!

Anyone around Manlius lose a blind duck? I was at the light waiting to turn from Highbridge onto Genesee and a pure white duck with no eye on right side landed NEXT TO ME! I put my hazards on, tried to open the door to catch him and he flew away. I hope s/he finds its way to the swan pond.

Welcome to the NY Coop, Nutty!

Lynzi, your pics have been very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

I hope to get a few more photo's of the fast-growing girls up soon. Meanwhile, they are all doing quite well. Still can't wait to integrate the biggies and littles, but it's not quite time yet. I am thinking of some supervised time in the pen in about a week and based on how that goes, I'll take it from there. Meanwhile, I make it work.

The Brabanter goes absolutely nuts when the big girls come in from the pen and fly up to their roosts. She gets so excited watching them. It's so cute -- like a little kid wanting to copy the bigger kids. I imagine she'll be very quick to join them, when the time is right.

I HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING ROOSTING POLES:

I sanded down 2 x 4's so that they are nice and smooth with rounded edges. We placed them "skinny side up" in the mounting brackets on the coop wall.

My question is this -- should they be flat side up instead? The ladies seem a bit wobbly, at least while they are settling in.

Thanks everyone!

I see their are quite a few NY Chicken Lovers and some close to me I am in Ava NY just outside of Boonville NY home and am about 15 miles North or Rome NY. If anyone near me has any laying hens they would like to part with I am looking for some right now I have babies who aren't laying and would really like some eggs now. Chicks I have are Buff Orpingtons, Black Cochin, White Cochin, Aracauna, Red Star, Black Star, Blue Andalusian, Partridge Rock, Dark Cornish, Speckled Sussex, Black Australorp, and Columbian Wyandotte ended up with a mixture. I have 50 acres so lots of land to build coops on.

Welcome 50 acres sounds great! What a mix you have I like it! You will over flowing with eggs. As for laying hens how far is macedon NY from ya? I went to MVCC.

my granfather worked in a paper mill for years making cardboard. If you had any idea of the toxins involved with cardboard you would never eat any of your vegetables. Just because cardboard starts as a tree doesn't make it natural or safe

Thanks that is very good to know!

TOB---wide side up. It allows the birds to cover their feet and keep them warm, especially during winter. I cannot tellyou how many coop pics I have seen in which the narrow part of the board is up or people used 2x2. Not comfortable for the birds nor good for keeping feet warm in winter.

Cooked a couple dozen eggs up for all the cheeps today. Miserable rainy day today but they did come running out from under the coop for their treat. Even the babies gobbled down theirs. Good way to use up some eggs as well. My little hurt silkie is getting a little better. Not hobbling as much. It has been resting in the brooder with its sibling and its quiet downstairs so that helps. Hoping for a full recovery soon.

Enjoying my day off by doing nothing but watching a series and crotcheting. Started another blanket. My cat has spent the day next to me on a blanket sleeping. She has missed me with all the working I have been doing. Back at it again tomorrow.

New bird pics well my roo other three no pics yet.

I also got a light Sussex pullet and 2 gold laced cochin chicks. my bantam cochin tried to take on the new birds. One or two pecks from (no name yet) blue ameraucana roo and he stoped with him but keeps trying to take on the Sussex that's a few months old. She runs away half the time just running him over and stepping on him to get away so funny. One good thing is the leghorn i'm not sure about didn't challenge him at all just checked him out some.

So we told my daughter it's time for bed she spouts i'm hungry without stopping just walks into the kitchen. Wife said she did it just cause it's bed time i'm just like yep. So we walk into the kitchen she's bringing some alfredo sauce and says you make this. I told her we have no chicken so we would have to cut up one of her silkies. With out thinking about it says "Ok kill rosy. No wait kill fuzzy it's a boy and I don't want him fighting other boys. We'll eat him." DW and I are just speechless. 5 years old and ok with eating her chickens. Then again she already stoped holding them and goes after the white bantam cochin to hold any more. When she gets older she's incharge of putting the chickens down when it's time to do the deed lol.

TOB

Yes. With wider side up when they squat to roost they will cover their feet and toes.
