NY chicken lover!!!!

Cute pics Stony!!

I don't know about Stella, the rain storm is gone and she's still outta the coop. I think I broke her broodiness by taking all those eggs away. LOL

Quote: Rancher, so far I have 3 Birchen Marans cockerels and just 1 pullet...I could probably help you out in the rooster department this fall when I see how they feather out...I wouldn't mix the EE into the Marans, it will mess it up something awful..

You could if you had raised beds. Expect to plant some flower seeds in the garden today to attract bees. I just toss a mix and whatever grows , grows. Just a 2 X 4 area for now. Last year had some Nicotiania and Bachelor buttons.
soon!! I will be making some soon!

While i was at work we lost power for 2 hours... incubator got down to 70* I will check tomorrow and hope that the egg is still alive.

We didn't lose power today but Breella, I must say, after seeing how long Stella was off her nest today, if she hatches what ever eggs I put under her I will be shocked. She was off for a good two hours. She hadnt yet laid on that egg because I had just placed it in there today when she got up, but if she continues to spend that much time off them, I will be surprised if they hatch. I hope you don't lose your eggs! Keeping fingers crossed for you!

I cant move anything in the coop as its all statioary. I will try introducing them again.

Rancher-- chickens are always plotting. Just look in their eyes!

Ok...back to drug dealing!

You need Dels. I can introduce anything and it works out. I had 2 BM pullets and no where to put them. Took them in one night and put them on the roost and the one that's left is fine. Sold the other to TOB. Put an EE hen in there and she's fine. Two little chicks both seem fine. Of course they do have their mothers. Dels must be liberals.

Now my Blk orp roos. No way Hosea. Can't trust them with anything.

Egg count has been down. Tonight only the 4 white and one blue. Where are all the brown eggs?!?! Did find one was broken under the broody, but I collect each night and haven't given any to her to set on yet. Cleaned out the box and filled with clean hay. Searched all through and around the horse barn, no brown eggs. Did find 6 white eggs hidden in the pine trees and tossed those. My only guess is they are laying somewhere in the tall grass in the pasture and I can't find them. Makes it difficult to gather eggs for both hatching and selling when you go from 6-10 a day to only 5. Selling eggs comes first, poor Luna.
Lost another hen today which does not help the egg situation. The Australorp was missing at lock up, but never seen any feathers when I was egg hunting. Found her in the ditch, which was flowing with water. May have gotten hit by a car then crawled to that spot and died. So that leaves me with 10 hens, of which 4 should be laying brown eggs almost daily. Will have to follow them this weekend or lock them in for a day.
And will need to buy some eggs for Luna, she has sat for a week now. I'd say she is serious about broody.

No , no . I just have the chick. I don't have EE's being "mixed" in the line. I just noticed it today. The rooster must have gotten together with the EE hens. I have no EE roosters at all. I'm not even sure he crossed with the EE. Just that this chick has the breast markings of the Birchen.

Roosters I got. I'm only keeping Jack and Jackson for now. There are other roo chicks coming up though. None of them have feathered feet though. In the UK feathered feet are a fault in the show world.

Chicks are easy to sex early since they mature fast.

I briefly mingled the big and little sisters today, under supervision of course. Rancher is right in that as far as I've been watching, the Del pullet is the only one who has not pecked the youngsters. The Maran is mostly curiosity pecking at the facial feather puffs on the Brabanter, but I haven't seen her peck too hard. However, the Columbian Rocks are being rather nasty. They both have given some very aggressive pecks and for no apparent reason (not near food). There is no way I'd leave them alone yet. But I figure I'll keep allowing them to mix a little to help ease into the transition. Boy, will it be a happy day when I can just run them together. It's a huge pain to keep them apart and still try to get everyone outside time, etc.

Here is Helen, the Maran, checking out Gertie (Brabanter), Cracker (Coronation Sussex) and Chumley (Lavender Orp). As you can see, they look a little bit unsure!
