Question Chicken Gurus -

I am still seeing some random diarrhea in (some) of the flock's poop. It is brown-orange in color (sorry to gross anyone out!) which doesn't particularly surprise me on account of the crumbles they eat. No blood or anything, but it is definitely not formed like the other poops I see.

Should I be doing something and should I be concerned?

Thanks.

Put cider vinegar in their water. Their poops will become solid. If they don't, then you should treat for coccidia. How do they feel when you pick them up? If their breast bone is readily felt, & are they light in weight? then they need to be treated for coccidia just in case. I put about 2 tablespoons of vinegar to a gallon of water. Any cider vingar will work, doesn't have to be the kind with "mother".

IMO the occasional runny poop is nothing to panic over. Seems to me too much lettuce, grapes or fruit can bring on some soupy poop. Make sure they have access to grit even though they are young.

I agree with the vinegar but not every day such as some think.

IMO chickens need only three things, good commercial feed, clean water and a dry place to sleep. I keep two feeder and waterers in the run so everyone has access and no one is getting pushed out, by bossy boots chickens.

Kind of hard to get dry right now with this weather. Lord have mercy it's like a bloody lake out there. Should a built an ark instead of a coop.

Morning all. Really cool storm last night. The lightning was fantastic. The rain was very hard, washing dirt away. Thank goodness it didnt last that long. The game cam showed a coon walking by around 3 am the other night. First time something has showed up on the game cam in a while. We make sure that there is no success in finding anything to eat around here. It also helps that all the city folks summer houses down the road have easy pickings garbage cans out next to the road. Saw them all turned over and garbage scattered yesterday morning on my way to work. Of course that mess wont be cleaned up till they all come back up this weekend. Our resident bears havent wandered by either but everyone else has been seeing them so perhaps they are also hitting the buffet barrels next to the road.

My last two silkie babies are going to their new home tomorrow. That will be a relief and one more cage out of my basement. Next is getting the rir tots into the diva coop, then my basement will be free! I was handling some of the divas the other day and I bet some of these girls are 9 pounds. No wonder they sound like they are going to go through the floor of the coop when they jump down.

Rancher---I would love some dels but I only have so much room! I need about 20 acres to have all the different chickens I want and then I would have to win the lottery to be able to stay home and take care of them all! Right now I am focusing on heritage rir;s. I am hoping to replace my hatchery stock with heritage over the next couple of years (although we all know chicken math will probably make it sooner!). My freezer is almost empty and when we defrost it there will be plenty of space available for freezer camp.

Stony--love the picks of the baby ducks with their chicken momma. I am thinking, however, she will not want to go in the pool with her babies!

Going to be a hot one today. Instead of drugs, I will be serving drinks today. Nonalcoholic. Some days I wish they were! Stay cool everyone and may your cheeps be well.

Well I think it's much to warm to send eggs right now but if you hatch then I'll send you a box of eggs for free. You just pay the postage. When you're ready of course. If you eat your birds you will love these CR's and BR's. Not real friendly but stocky.

Folks who ship eggs check CL for bubble wrap. I found a guy who saves it from his place of work and got a nice big box for $5.

ta, ta for now,

Rancher

There is a poop page that has all the different pics of normal poop of chickens.  http://www.chat.allotment.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=17568

This is a really good reference page and it explains why the poop looks like it does.  Hope this helps.

I love that they are laying eggs while the other is broody in the same best! My BE gets nasty if another bird interrupts her while she's laying an egg. Lol

I reference that sure all the time..

TOB yeah I'm dedicated runner.

Ok back to work, I'm working on dog #4&5 3 more then I go home.

I do have a Del on eggs and in the future if things don't work out we can make a switch to Dels. They're an easy going breed. I do have CR with orps and the RIR and they seem to get along.

I want to give things a chance, Rancher, but thanks and we'll keep it in mind and see how things go. They are very beautiful, but definitely full of a little "P & V", if you know what I mean!

I have vinegar with mother, Marquisella. Bought it as I read it was handy to have. I will treat them, just in case. It can't hurt. The weights feel OK to me, from what I can tell, but keep in mind I'm inexperienced at this. They seem fine, otherwise, just one or two must have diarrhea. I'll have to keep watch, but one is definitely the Brabanter. The other might be the Maran, but not positive on this. And it's not constant, just sporadic.

Thanks for the guidance.

Well, I went to the Poop Page and feel A LOT better now!

Apparently, the poops I'm likely seeing are "Ceacal" types and this explains the sporadic nature of them, as they occur every 8 poops or so.

I may still give a round of vinegar with "mother" as I figure it can't hurt.

However, after picking up all the younger lasses today, they all feel pretty solid and are currently enjoying some time outside while the big sisters are having some down time in the coop. Still switching them on / off for now...

Thanks again for the great advice!

You'll learn a lot with your first chickens....sometimes I think my brain can't hold anymore, and then...bang...something else gets tucked away. Now if I can only remember why I sat down to the computer........
