NY chicken lover!!!!

Evening all. Would somebody turn off the water please! We have had more than enough thanks.

Lynzi---dont appologize for being a mean mom. Mean moms mold children into responsable adults. I was a mean mom and I cant tell you how many compliments I got and still get about my girls and how well behaved, mannerly, considerate, etc they are. Even from a very young age I could take them to a sit down restaurant and have a pleasant meal and people would be amazed at the fact that they sat nicely, ate nicely and behaved properly. Mean moms make great kids.

Cass--glad I wasnt a bystander when you were butchering!

Cheeps are not thrilled with this weather either. Hoping this stops soon.

Early day tomorrow so off to bed. Ta

I swear all this rain is upsetting the hens cuz their laying is way off. No eggs today and only 1 the day before. I average 3 eggs a day. I keep thinking I am going to go out there to find them quacking.......at least the tots are venturing out in it

Picked up a 120 lumen LED flashlight tonight so I could peek at the eggs. Not completely sure what I'm looking at and couldnt tell you what day they look like, but I think they are doing good. One looks empty, so I think that is what everyone refers to as a clear? The others I can see some veining and even movement in a couple. Wellies were too dark to see much, but could tell light and dark inside. Even my one blue egg is developing.
Luna is so good. I pick her out and set her alongside and she doesn't move as I count and check the eggs. When I'm done i just pick her up again and set her on the eggs.
Hoping to integrate the kids this weekend into the flock. May need to lock the Roos up to keep the kids safe. Then I can use the Eglu and pen after the new babies hatch.

I'm new here and just wanted to say hello from Ulster County. I've been lurking for a few weeks, this appears to be a very active thread. I have no chickens yet but am planning a flock for next spring. I'm interested in getting a mixed flock (for egg color variety and fun) of Wyandottes, Black Copper Marans, Wheaten Ameraucanas, and Welsummers. My sister in Vermont has a large flock of Buff Orpingtons.

My husband and I work full-time (no kids) so although we built a lovely coop about 10 years ago, we hesitated actually getting a flock started because we were afraid we could not get home in time to lock them up securely each evening. We have since built a 7-foot fence for our dogs around a large portion of our yard containing the coop area, so my sister is encouraging me to finally get some hens. We'll also build an attached run for the coop this fall/winter. My property borders a huge tract of NY State Forest Preserve in the Catskills and we have a lot of predators, especially bears. I figure a lot of you from Upstate NY are dealing with the same and hope to learn a lot from you.

Anyone here from Ulster, Delaware, Greene Counties, or the Hudson Valley? When the time comes, I'd be interested in obtaining chicks locally for pickup, if possible. (I consider within a 2-3 hour drive to be somewhat local).

Anyhow, thanks for sharing your knowledge, I love all the info on BYC. Hope everyone is staying dry.

Poor Pearl looks how I feel. However she's so thrilled to be outside!

Even the dogs had to come over to watch...

Tada! I now have a covered area! Just need to get the second half done (I need another bracket) and then get up the anti hawk/cat fencing over the open area and I'm set!
Pearl looks like mine but probably a lot nicer! My girl Bernadette was screaming for my attention today my neighbors are going to be angry if she doesn't keep it down LOL. I swear I have the loudest silkies. I put a similar cover on my run and I've very happy with it. It's like a roof but lets in light.
My first frizzle chick!!!
1000
Very cute
Well Buckwheat hatched a chick. She's one of my frizzles. She hatched a chick some time ago, but this time took over the eggs of a Del hen. So I split the eggs between the two of them. Not sure how long the Del had been on the eggs. There hopefully will be some of Buckwheats eggs in there and perhaps some frizzles.

Ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this rain. I've too much to do.

I feel your pain rancher, it's actually making me feel depressed a bit. I just need to get my shed built. But between school work my dogs working out and my ten year old, some days I just walk back in the house. At least I don't have to water anything.
On a trip back in Orson snuck up behind me. I panicked for a moment but then he just sat down next to me and watched them. Originally I was worried he'd attack the chicks because he has a habit of chasing cats. However he was very well behaved. Stayed next to me, listened to commands. The chickens weren't happy about him but they werent terrified either.

What a good boy!
3 Ducklings hatched. Not sure about the last egg....the momma has a FIT when I pick her up and I had just fallen on the boardwalk outside my coop, so my knee was hurting too much to stand there and fight with her to get another look at the egg.

This rain can stop anytime now. If the ducklings were old enough to go out of the coop they could just paddle around on the entire lawn. It's a swamp out there.

No pics, no camera. (Cell phone would work, but it's so old it doesn't have cord to connect to computer to upload them)
Congrats on the ducks. my back part of my backyard is a swamp too LOL

Okay I thought it was just me then. Well this rain needs to go.

So I hope all is well with everyone. On my little slowly forming homestead things are going well. I planted some peppers and garlic and didn't get anything done in the yard today!

My baby is still in sickbay and will probably be there for awhile but she is flourishing. I got her dog house I have to clean out, that I can put a light in make little roost and a cute door. On the warmer days I will let her free range a bit.

Okay I hope everyone has a good night and good morning! take care.

Agree, he is a very good boy. This is encouraging, I hope to be able to train my boy Baxter to leave chickens alone, but I know it will take work, he's great with cats, but likes to chase rabbits and squirrels.
