NY chicken lover!!!!

I am seriously considering giving up either the BR's which folks like or the Lav orps. I just can't decided which.
Sorry but your can't get rid of the BR's. Too many people like them

. I know of at least one person that wants hatching eggs once they learn how to incubate correctly.

Has  anybody else been hatching out a LARGE # of roo's ?????????????

I have :    Barred rocks , Blue Barred rocks,  Speckled Sussex,  Iowa Blue/Ameracauna   X's   and possibly Aracauna   &  BLRW.  Not sure who's who yet on the last 2 breeds !!

If any one would like 1,2 or several  :lau     I would be willing to trade for a pullet  (  Rancher & I did this )   Otherwise they are destined for freezer camp this fall  :/

Yessss!! I hatched 9 and it looks like at least 5 are Roos....ughhhh

Well not I can't say but the BM's are running fifty fifty. Pullets to roos. Ok with that. Can't say on the Dels as I get rid of them as soon as I know what's what. Only kept a few EE pullets the rest go with all the roos.

The BR's aren't laying well and I suspect they're upset or some such thing since Jackson has been going back there to eat. I really need to block the BM's from going back there. The orps aren't laying well since I've not been letting them out to roam, zuc the Orp roos go after the young ones and hurt them.

If I could do the freezer camp thing, I'd not be getting rid of any.

Ooh, if you end of getting rid of the Lavender Orps let me know! I might have a little more room by then. I'm finally working on my new. larger, stationary coop!I could probably only take 2 or 3. I love the Buff Orp I got this year.

You don't even have to see her eat it. If you know she's laying and there are no eggs in the crate you know she's dining on them !

She's not laying (at least I don't think so) because I think she's broody. She doesn't act broody, but her chest feathers are bare. She's just weird.
I'll have to sacrifice an egg or two from another hen.

That is not true. I candle my eggs straight out of the incubator...never heard that one before..!

Me either. I usually wait til day 7 - 10. I don't expect they'd explode if they weren't fertile in that amount of time. I candle in a series of a few each day.

I can't imagine much would happen in two days that would be noticeable.

Now interestingly enough the new PP mag. has an article on hatching that mentions letting them cool for a period of time to mimic a hen getting off her eggs. That's a new one on me. I've had hens I rarely see off the nest. Some come bolting out of the coop eat like mad, drop pile and are back on the nest. Others seem to take their time. Like women they're all different. I say if that's the way you want to do it, fine by me.

The article is using a Brinsea. I will scan it and send it to anyone who wants it but you must send me your e-mail address. ( I do not keep addresses. I can never remember who is who and why I have their address

Well I am leaning toward the orps since I can get more in the future, but the CR's and BR's are not easy to get. CR's are from GA and he got them out of Canada. These are true dual purpose. The BR's are the same way and eggs from one expert are $55 doz not including shipping. A friend who got his eggs did not have a good hatch with them either. 3/24.

I did get a nice Roo chick from Crazy, so things may work out. I think BR's because popular as they are hard to spot in the woods and brush.

I was going to say the same, if I had to pick and had the breeds you have, I'd go with the orps. I don't ever see too many ads posted for BRs or the other breeds you have. I know someone who breeds the lavender orps and could get some whenever I wanted - so I would part with those knowing they're easier to get a hold of than the others if you ever wanted to start back up again.
