NY chicken lover!!!!

Happy Father's Day! Hope everyone is staying dry.

The same to Trav and all the dads on here. Now in honor of Fathers day two funny stories.

#1. My DD bought me a pair of red shorts with a shirt to match. A while ago we were out shopping and she picked out a pair of red khaki pants and a shirt but I said I'm too old to wear read pants. So she buys me shorts! I do appreciate them and will wear them. Just don't laugh where I can see you.

#2. My SIL called to wish me a happy father's day and to tell me that my DD asked the Queen who she loved more, Da da or Ma ma? She yells GRAMMA!

Enjoy the day Dads.

Me either. I usually wait til day 7 - 10. I don't expect they'd explode if they weren't fertile in that amount of time. I candle in a series of a few each day.

I can't imagine much would happen in two days that would be noticeable.

Now interestingly enough the new PP mag. has an article on hatching that mentions letting them cool for a period of time to mimic a hen getting off her eggs. That's a new one on me. I've had hens I rarely see off the nest. Some come bolting out of the coop eat like mad, drop pile and are back on the nest. Others seem to take their time. Like women they're all different. I say if that's the way you want to do it, fine by me.

The article is using a Brinsea. I will scan it and send it to anyone who wants it but you must send me your e-mail address. ( I do not keep addresses. I can never remember who is who and why I have their address

).
Haha that's funny, they really are all different. The EE would get off the nest for like 5 minutes maximum but she was also a terrible mother...now the silkie that is currently sitting gets off and takes her time. She is also very loud the entire time she is off the nest, she clucks away and runs around like crazy.

That is exactly what Stella does LOL She comes flying (literally) out of the coop, and runs around clucking, like she's counting the seconds she has until she's gotta get back. She does stay out for at least 45 mins, if not longer, but clucks the whole time. Almost like she's got a list of things in her head that she's gotta do "Ok water, where's the water, oh yea over here! Bird seed, gotta get to the seed! Scraps, where are the scraps? Did I miss out today? Oh man, here comes that roo, gotta dodge him!" It's soo funny to watch.

mama chicken just accepting that her "chicks" are weird
She is thinking they must take after their fathers side LOL!

Rancher I have a new Brinsea and it has the cool down option you can set it for different amounts of time to cool up to 360 minutes or to not cool so of course I checked out why it has this and not sure if I will do it especially not for 360 minutes that is 6 hours but I guess if they are saying 6 hours is safe if the power goes out for a couple of hours the eggs shouldn't have a problem.
Here is a link for Brinseas explanation and their si a link on there to the research paper they are basing this on http://www.brinsea.com/cooling.html

Has anyone ever tried this with eggs that have gone past the 22-23 hatch date?

Was thinking of trying it tomorrow if still nothing comes from these eggs. Still no pips, no zips, no cheeps or peeps.

I'm thinking they're done.
Will keep that bookmarked incase I need it.

Well I am leaning toward the orps since I can get more in the future, but the CR's and BR's are not easy to get.   CR's are from GA and he got them out of Canada. These are true dual purpose.  The BR's are the same way and eggs from one expert are $55 doz not including shipping.  A friend who got his eggs did not have a good hatch with them either.   3/24.

I did get a nice Roo chick from Crazy, so things may work out.    I think BR's because popular as they are hard to spot in the woods and brush.

yeah i've seen the prices. Almost meakes me think about breeding them. But i love my rainbow looking flock. I just want like 4 BR's for auto sexing ee's. Got some cuckoo marans from tab will work for oe's pluse i don't have much black in my rainbow flock yet.

The air cell the site was talking about was after the hen lays egg. The egg cools liquid shrinks when cool forming the air cell. Thats why i was trying to candle. But i didn't see anything even before they went in the bator. Some of my eggs don't have a big end really so was trying to make sure i did air cell on top. In the end i guessed on like 2-3 eggs.

I'm sure you all are going to think I'M crazy now, but I took a flashlight to these eggs while they were in the bator to see if I could see anything at all by shining the light different ways and what not and I WAS able to see the air cell. So I held it there for a few mins to see I could see any movement around it's edge and didn't see anything. The other one was too light of a a color but the one that was a shade darker was easier to make out. So I just focused one that one. Don't think these eggs are going anywhere. If not, Duncan's been running around with the bigger girls, I may try to hatch some of their eggs just for the heck of it. They'll be silkie mixed with BO and BR but owell.

Keep waiting! Don't lose hope! Float test them tomorrow but give them a few more days!

Question: I have had my oldest chickens 12 weeks this week. They are molting SO BAD. Does this mean I can expect eggs in about a month? Or sooner? The oldest are about 13 weeks old, the younger group are about 10 weeks old.

Well I have an EE that has one running around from earlier this year. She had been going in and laying where the Del hen was and I'd scoop her green out each day. Must be one day she went in to lay her egg and decided "what the heck might as well hatch a few while I'm here" and stayed on the eggs. She just hatched a chick the other day and has three more eggs though I've no idea when they are due.

They make me crazy.

Do you guys think I have a mature red sex link pullet or some crazy roo? about 11-12 weeks old. I wish they were all as easy to sex as BrahMutt. BrahMutt is so manly and the same age.
