NY chicken lover!!!!

I wish I had a rider. If i win the TSC thing that's what I'll do with the money.

Lynzii - beautiful chick.

Tab - what are you hoping to hatch. I've got these two EE broodies just aching to hatch. I'm fixing to give them some eggs but it still means digging out the EE eggs every night. I'd give the either the Del or Orp coop eggs so I can tell them appart.

Well work tomorrow, gotta go,

Rancher
We have an old John Deer that just keeps on running. I mow over 10 acres of pasture, which gets very high in places and this mower just keeps on truckin'. When my husband bought it I thought it was to expensive, but I have to tell you, it was worth every cent. I keep lusting after a mower with a bigger mowing deck, but ......it is always about the money isn't it.....I certainly could not mow with a push mower. Though I think I may pay to have the pastures brush hogged later in the year.

Morning all! Eowyn now has 2 babies and another zipping and cheeping loudly. It should hatch sometime today. She is doing a good job and her sisters are curious but stay back. Looks like 2 blue porcilain silkie babies. So tiny and cute! Its nice having momma do the work. Now I have to go get chick feed.

Treated the terrorists and divas/taters to some cantalope this morning. It was overripe so dd said the cheeps could have it. They were thrilled of course. I told Olaf to enjoy his last few days. He goes to freezer camp this weekend. The girls will be able to grow some feathers back by the end of the summer. Poor things are half naked from his attentions. I am sure they will enjoy the break from a rooster.

Lynzi---if you have a lone hatch with its momma, it should be okay with her if she is a good momma. She will protect it and it will hide under her if it feels threatened.

Stony--I hope you can get that furniture disaster straighted out. What a loss.

Off to my other job today. Going to be a long day. Cant wait to see how many babies are here when I get home.

Ohh ok, good to know!
I was just thinking yesterday - how nice it is to have broodies hatch these eggs in warm weather and not have to worry about a heat lamp, brooder, etc. I love it! LOL You'll have to share pics when your babies are done hatching. I don't think I've ever seen a blue porcelain. Sounds pretty.

Morning Everyone,
Let me just say - I am soooo happy it's Friday! Thought this week would never end! 3 Days of work for me next week and then a much needed vacation!

I need to figure out some kind of housing for Duncan. Not sure if I should pick up another crate from Taylor Rental, or figure out something with what I have here. I thought about using the pen I was keeping the ducks in but I need that to round them up at night. They've been wandering around more and more since I let them out to free range last weekend. Yesterday they went into the silkies coop for a visit. LOL For those who let their ducks free range, how do you get them back into their coops at night? Mine will not go in on their own. I swear they'd sit out in the grass all night if I let them. So I have to open up this pen at night, get it about half way out in front of them coop, walk behind them until they enter, shut it, then get them in the coop and close it up, place the pen back. It's quite the task. They don't always go into the pen on the first try.

Checked on that last egg this morning and there is a little pip in it. Hope it hatches.

Seems to be taking a while.

Oh and here is a picture of the 3rd chick that hatched yesterday morning. I believe it's a splash or a blue. Anyone know?

Yeah that's what I figure, it just drives me a little banana's seeing them piling on top of one another in the corner of the coop where there is so much roosting space and floor space. I just worry about one getting trampled. That's life with chickens though :)

Splash chicks are typically born white. Looks blue to me.

Good news and bad news...
Blackie's single egg hatched (our very first).
Bad news... I'm not sure if it's going to make it. It's a day early and I'm thinking the egg may have been broken. When I went in this morning, Blackie was off the nest waiting for scratch (nothing new). I checked and at first didn't see the egg. I thought maybe she ate it. Then in the corner I saw broken shell and a chick lying there. I thought it was dead at first. No movement. Then I saw it gasp for air. It was taking a breath every 10 seconds or so and the chest was barely moving. Poor thing was cold too. I scooped it up and brought it in and have it on a heat pad in a box. It is breathing better and moving a little and it just started peeping very tiny, weak peeps. It's eyes are not open. I take that back. I just checked again and they are slightly open. The chick is doing nothing but lying on it's side.
Other than a heat light, is there anything I can do for this chick? I'll post a pic as soon as it loads to my email.
The egg shell looked normal.

Princess, I have nothing to tell you to help, but you have my support. It is hard to be trying to save a creatures life all by yourself, with not a lot of experience to go with. I believe you will do your best and if that isn't enough, you will have tried, and it was not meant to be. My thoughts are with you.
