NY chicken lover!!!!

Yeah - they all like we starve them ! :)

Very heartwarming - I named her/him Colo - short for miracle .... I was 90% sure hen for the first months ... now the comb is getting pretty pronounced .... Carried Colo around doing weeding today & Colo was not a happy bird. ha ha ha

hahahaha! Too funny, Lynzi. Well, I know you're not laughing, but you made me laugh! Your hens and ducks (despite being slack-offs) are adorable! And to think I actually want my oldest bird, the Marans, to HOLD OFF laying until late summer. I'm so afraid she'll start laying while I'm gone on a long weekend and get an egg-eating bad habit going either in herself or the others.

I dont think you have to worry about them being egg eaters when they first start laying. I dont collect eggs till I feed them after dinner and never had one eat the eggs that were laid in the morning. In fact the other day my Mom had the eggs in her pocket & one cracked & I told her to just drop it on the ground, shell & all. 2 of the girls ate it right up. I have done this with fart eggs before & I have never had a problem with them eating eggs even though I do this from time to time

If you ever need any help while you're away you know where to find me! the longest I've left eggs in nestboxes are a day or two and I have yet to have a problem with egg eating, then again mine weren't laying for the first time when we left. So I feel like they "know" not to eat eggs that have been left for a day or two? IDK. Either way, if you ever need help with chores I'm here! ;)

Hi armorefirelady,

Thanks for the reassurance...these are the things that make me feel better. I know I worry about way too much, but I guess it's in my character...unfortunately!!!

Lynzi,

Thank you! As I was telling Armorfirelady, I appreciate these exchanges of experiences from people who are ahead of the game in chicken ownership than I am. Also, thanks for the offer to help with my ladies. So far, I'm good for my short getaways, but should we try for a longer stretch later in the summer, perhaps I can take you up on that offer. I am around much more come fall, and maybe we can help each other! Tully is just 15 or so minutes from my neck of the woods!

OMG, so sorry you have to deal with all that! I'd be ticked!! I would have told her to tie it up or I'LL kill it the next time it comes around my chickens! UGH, that makes me so angry that people can't contain their dogs to their own yard. Sorry about your hen.

Ditto here. If you do have a gun , you should be sitting waiting on the blasted dog and drop it the minute you see it in your yard. It THEIR responsibility to keep THEIR dog safe. Letting it go where it is due to get hurt is on there head.

The latter part means being too kind or lenient. The reason it is cruel to be lenient, is the beast, in this case dog, will get hurt or worse for their being to lax.

Rancher, what did you say were the possible mixes on this guy I got from you? He's adorable. A little over a month old and already has green sheen to his black tail feathers. I'm worried I have a real ladies man on my hands...

Ask Pharm to send you some silkie eggs, if she has some she wants to ship out. Her birds are beautiful, and my eggs from her just started hatching. One out this morning, and it's gorgeous. Five perfect little toes with great spacing, a big poofy top knot, bearded, just a perfect little thing. Another pipped and the rest due later today.

Pyxis I think I will do that thanks.

hello all! new member here, you all have been very informative and helpful to this new chicken farmer, thanks!

Welcome to BYC

Nutty,

I don't know if you incubate, but if you are close to me I can incubate for you!, Ginny

Thank you so much for the offer but I do Incubate and actually love the excitement of seeing that first little pipp. Haven't had the pleasure of a broody hen yet so it is just me and the incubators.

Last night found multiple piles of black/white feathers, one by the back deck and another 2-3 alongside the garage. Called the girls for treats and one of the Anconas are missing. Those are NOT easy birds to catch, very alert and fast. The Amish finally mowed our field yesterday, so I suspected one of their stupid dogs followed down and found a snack. No body or blood to be found anywhere, just feathers. But had no proof it was their dog.
Well, this morning as we are getting into the car to leave for work, hear a ruckus with the chickens. Walk out of the garage to have the EE hen go streaking past the garage with that danged Amish dog, a yellow Australian Shepard, chasing full speed after her. So glad it is Friday so I had my sneakers on, cause I went running after that dog screaming like a banshee. And all my husband could yell behind me was to be nice and not say anything mean to the Amish!

Well my lungs gave out halfway up the hill (a runner I am not), but got up there and let the woman know that came out of the barn that she either ties up the dog or kills it, because it killed one of my chickens yesterday and was after them again this morning.

Hubby pulls up in the car and tries to smooth things over. Ugh, sometimes I could just slap him. So now I am at work, exhausted and a sore throat from the busy work week and this morning's adventure. Hoping it is a quiet day today, Im ready for a nap.

I am so sorry about your hen and I know how aggravating it is my hubby does the same thing he is always trying to smooth things over after I get done makes me mad cause it makes me look like the jerk.
I rarely use the incubator. This year it has only been used to hatch eggs broody's had to leave to raise chicks. So 8 days ago I put 6 eggs in the bator. Had no idea how long they had been sat on. They were extra's under the broody. Laid late. With the hot temps I was having trouble not having the temp go crazy so I finally just left it at 95 degree's. I never turned them. This afternoon 3 of the 6 hatched.

My point. People fret way too much over incubating. Eggs are amazing. Doesn't take much to hatch them.

Funny you say this, after all the research I did on hatching eggs - temp, humidity, when to turn, when to candle when not to candle - I just came to the conclusion that I'm going to do things my own way - I'll candle when I want to candle, if an egg needs help on day 20 after it pipped but nothing has happened in 24hrs, I'll open it up and help it out. I've read so much that it's not as crucial as some people make it out to be.
I agree I have done the incubating my way and I so far have had great hatch rates and I have and will open the bator during lockdown and have helped out some eggs too.
Hey thanks TOB! We ended up at the teddy bear factory and the shelburne museum. Had a great time! :)
