NY chicken lover!!!!

hi TOB, i currently have some RIR's , leghorns, plymouth rocks, just got some ameracaunas (i think), a salmon faverolle, and 2 chanteclers. i want to eventually combine them when they get big enough, right now, 1 master coop, 2 smaller coops

Ok, the soft eggs are Pearls eggs. I think she has sour crop. Lethargic, small apatite, found her with her head under her wing this morning. I am going to treat with Kiefer yoghurt when I get home from work. Any other suggestions?

Morning all. Been a crazed working woman and so just finished reading six pages worth of your chatter.

Welcome to the newbies. The sickness has no cure so just accept it now and things will be fine.

Love all the pics. Stony---need pics of your camper.

Pyxis--dont give up just yet. The rest of the eggs may still hatch. Pics of the new little ones please!

My silkie hens have all gone broody but two. One is raising her babies and the other lays every other day. Two of the 3 broodys in the terrorist coop have finally gotten off the nest but egg production is still down, due to this crazy weather I think. Elanor, my diva coop, has gone broody. She is allowed as she is a much favored hen. I also have to work on her feet again (bumblefoot) so her being off her feet is a good thing. She is a big glw hen and very sweet. No eggs for her to hatch. Maybe next year. Tater tots are eating me out of house and home and growing big. I suspect the two pullets may not lay till a little later being heritage breed but who knows, they may surprise me. Their combs are still pale so its not going to be any time soon. The boys are pink but they too are maturing slowly. However, they now tower over my adult diva hens and those girls are not small by any means. I will try to take pics if I remember.

Oh look, more rain. I was afraid we might dry out....not.

Lynzi--my cheeps loved the cicadas my dh brought home for them. Gobbled they right up. Free protein!

Off to work again. I need to win the lottery so I can be a stay at home chicken mommy!

Thanks everyone for the advice and help. We will keep all of u updated. Monday I will be giving oral antibiotics and see how it goes. I'm late for work but I will post what meds we are giving. I will also post a few pics. You all were great with the kind words and help. May the chicken gods be kind to all.

I am really new to the chicken raising. I seem to read so much info. and still feel clueless! My 12 are approx. 17 weeks old. I have 10 Hens and 2 Roos. 1 Hen just started laying. We were surprised because we had anticipated it in August. I go out to the coop early morning to spend time, do the chores and observe their behavior. I noticed this morning that the more docile of the 2 Roos has bent toes (not sure what they're called) but its the index one on each side that bends outward. I had noticed it only on one side and thought it was a birth defect. What can that be and why did it happen to both sides?
I haven't seen the Roos being aggressive towards each other at all. The main Roo does go around biting the girls though! Two questions: should we cull the one with the toe issues? And is it normal for the Roo to bite and chase the girls? No matter what color they are.

Rancher, what did you say were the possible mixes on this guy I got from you? He's adorable. A little over a month old and already has green sheen to his black tail feathers. I'm worried I have a real ladies man on my hands...

I'm not completely sure. He may be an EE cross. Crossed to my BM roo. I only hatched the Green/blue EE eggs or Dels.

The bent toes are called bent toes.

Now seriously "toe issues" are only issues if you make them an issue. If you like him and want to keep him that's fine. I have two roosters with bent toes but neither passes the trait along to the young.

I've read many opinions on what causes them and quite frankly none of them helped, their toes were still bent.

Chickens aren't like humans, they will not make fun of him for his bent toes. Some girls like roosters who are little bent, I mean hens.

So if you love him then keep him. As long as he can walk upright and eat okay let him live.

I wish you well,

Rancher

For the record I had a girl friend once whose toes were bent. She wasn't much to look at but she could crack open walnuts with her feet and that was cool.

the rubber roof gets glued on after breakfast.

I had to put tiny tires on it to get it out of the garage. The tongue weight is only 60 lbs so far at it is really easy to roll by myself by hand.

:) I just don't want him to suffer or have anything that can be spread to the flock. As long as he's walking and seems healthy, I'm good with him. What about the other one that is more aggressive and bites the girls? Is that fine too?
