NY chicken lover!!!!

Cover them with Nustock or blue kote
I ran out to the local TSC and got some blukote. Thankfully they hadn't closed yet.

Warning, graphic photo under the spoiler.

That is just one of them, I couldn't get to the spot on the neck very well. Didn't even know it was there until I touched it and felt the heat. :-( poor guy.

Also, is there anyone local who is breeding Dark Brahmas? Could maybe use a very stunning rooster? I may not be able to keep Duane. I'm worried that the neighbors are going to start fussing since he is VERY vocal at the smallest thing. This morning he was still crowing at 10am.

oh roosters stop crowing dureing day?? someone tell my roo he crows just to hear himself all day long. I mean from time sun comes up till he's roosting at about 9 pm. Seems when ever he moves to a different spot like the coop or back out he has to let everyone know he's moved. Even moveing in and out of a bush. No complaints yet since my neighbors aint right next to me though.

Ok egg question and about eating eggs. The hen that I moved into small coop with injured bird laid an egg late last night/early morning. We was out all day and I found she laid another egg in middle of coop. This egg had been poked by the looks of it or maybe scraped. I am wondering if there is something wrong with her or will breaking egg open right after laying it leave it almost like a laytex feeling. It has egg color but the shell aint hard almost rubbery. I don't think she used the nest box cause the light Sussex was in it when we got home sleeping on her egg. I have another nest box in there but both eggs this morning was in the ground one. So she laid in middle of coop it seemed instead of nest box.

On a bright note I got my two turkey's today the people who ordered them think they got all toms. They ordered straight run and all the chicks strut and try to gobble at like 5 days old. Got brood brested bronze.

this thin shelled egg is due to lack of calcium. I suggest you sprinkle some oyster shell grit in the feed. Even the dust is good so don't be afraid to toss some in each feeding. Back off on the treats too. If they fill up on corn and oats they won't get enough calcium.

I'm experiencing the same problem due to the whole coop being on grower crumbles. I've got chicks at all stages and keep the entire coop on grower so the youngsters don't get to much calcium from the layer feed. It is a pain. I've put a dish of oyster shell out this pm and hope that only the big girls will eat it. We shall see.

Some mornings I skip the scratch toss and wait til later in the day. I do make sure all feeders are at least half full though.

thanks rancher. Right now my chickens are on starter/grower mixed with layer pellets. some aint laying so figure starter would help them. I do put some de and just the other day some oyster shells in with food. The egg from them this morning was good todays was bad from that chicken. I put her in that coop cause yesterday she looked like she had yolk on her vent area so I was thinking she had an egg problem but then she did a good one then a bad one. Seems like she's a yoyo good bad. I just checked the shell and it's harder now but not as thick as should be. if I get another tomorrow i'll take a pic or video to show people. My first time with chickens so maybe im over reacting.

So we went to the fair today and I have to say 4h had some of the worst birds I've seen. Like 3/4 of them was over stuffed meat birds. Very few show birds and only a few true breeds. I thought I would see a few nice silkies but only one from tsc just like mine. I am going to get son a nice bird next year to show. I have to learn a lot but thankfully he learns great. He takes in so much and if I give him a book about it he will be a pro. We did the fire safety truck and he was so literal on telling the firemen on what to do he gave them pointers. They told him if door is hot not to open it put a sheet out window or a toy. My son responds back you can also put the sheet at bottom of door to stop smoke. Took the fireman a min to respond like he was caught off guard.

Even the wife was disappointed in the birds. One of the meat birds wouldn't even stand to eat stretched neck just to reach pan. Feet was curled under it almost thought its feet was malformed till it finally stood up guess it couldn't get enough food sitting. I know 4h is mostly kids I just wish the parents gave the kids something beside meat birds to raise was such a sad sight to see. I think I may have to pick a breed to breed just to give chicks to 4h. Those kids deserve a better bird. Did you know "fryer" was a breed a few tags read that, others did say Cornish x.

So I ask those that breed chickens check what your local 4h is doing and make sure they have a bird they can be proud of.

Sorry to be complaining about this just want the kids to get a good experience and hopefully a bird they can be proud of and maybe keep past the slaughter weight... I didn't know the birds at the fair was so bad off.

The bantams was better but only cause you cant make meat birds out of them. There was a few nice ones not dirty not over weight stood strong. True I don't know the standard for them but to me they looked like a prouder bird. Then again most these birds been in the little show cage all week and who knows if owners took them out at all through the week.

morning all. I was late getting up to let everyone out and boy did I ever hear about it. Had my first challenge today. I reached in to pet the divas and taters before opening the pop door and Roger, my rir boy, grabbed my hand. He got the surprise of his life when I grabbed him by the hackles and pinned him to the floor. He was screaming like a girl he was so scared. I did it twice and then held him upside down while I was busy refilling the tube feeder and such. Gladys came over to "help" me with Roger but let when she saw I had him well in hand (pun intended). I then turned him right side up and held his beak while telling him no. I do believe he is still hiding in the coop. His brother Bill was hiding at the very back of the coop while this was happening making very nervous bawking and pacing. I think he got the message as well. The divas had no problem with any of what was going on. They just went about their business as usual. The rir girls werent quite sure what to do.

Off to the pharm for another fun filled day.

Good Roo Wrestle ...

Pharm ! In this corner the winner ...DING DING ! Pharm Chick !

Does your kitty have that urinary tract thing ? like mine ? He gets human tuna or mackerel for his treat .
A can is around a $ & lasts him a week . He has to ask for his treat too ..

It would look great in that dark green to match the roof trim .

We have a Kazzoo Roo too Sammi the Samatra
Skid Mark the Samatra did his 1st real crow today .

CONGRATS to all those who have their young ladies growing up ..& have their 1st eggs ...
Double yolkers are always cool to find

TOB Is it too early to feed extra calcium to the younger pullets I have? I've heard you don't want to supplement calcium to younger birds, but can't remember the age when it's good to start. I figured laying time...
I give it 2 weeks before I think they will start laying..so they dont have to draw from their bones if they dont have enough calcium .

Shells I save in the frig ...microwave & then cop in my food processor to tiny bits

JLaw- I noticed our fair was much different this year. Of corse we went down first night, maybe more were on the way. Last year there were lots of nice looking show birds. This year it was mostly meat chickens, a couple production reds, TSC silkie, and maybe 3 cages of good looking bantam English Game. Not sure if they split the week with nicer show birds coming in for the weekend. Or if there was health problems that scared off the nicer birds. Going to head back down later today, last day. Might not be much left though, typically the livestock is released last day. We were going yesterday until it started raining, and knowing the place would be packed due to the Modified & Super Stock pulls. Tonight is demo derby finals. Broome County Fair in Whitney Point.

Morning all. My oldest dd left last night for GA. I am hoping this change helps her move beyond her depression over the breakup. He certainly has moved on with another girl and party pics. Dumbass. Anyways, girls are picking up laying again with the cooler weather. Roger is avoiding me so I guess he got the message. There was a ruckus in the diva coop last night. I guess one of my br asserted herself to reclaim her spon on top of the nesting boxes so one of rhe rir taters got kicked off. Dh went out to see what all the wing flapping was about. That was it.

Jlaw--sounds like your girls need more calcium and hold off on the treats for a while. I find that too much of the goodies causes them to lay less. Oh, on that show I watched My life as a turkey, the boys did display and drop their wings at 5 days old. Yes, some girls just like to sing the egg song all day long and/or sing it for everyone else. I have a couple like that. They usually shut up when I tell them to stop lying as I already took their egg. My silkie girls make an awful rukus when they lay an egg and alll of them feel the need to join in.

Gramm-no, my kitty has no issues. I just watch her intake because she would weigh 100 pounds if she ate canned food! She nibbles all day on a cup of dry food. Just trying to keep her at a healthy weight is all. She is spoiled and does get people food from time to time.

Raining today so maybe I will clean, or crotchet. Got a great deal on some yarn at michaels so I am making some christmas gifts. Someone asked me if I was going to make sweaters for my chickens...hmmm, I wonder if I could figure out how to make chicken saddles? Not now. Got to finish this vest first and then the shrug. I am soooo obsessed! Chickens still rank as my number one obsession though.

alright,,,time to get moving. Later peeps!

It seems to be non stop. My MIL hordes cats, last thing I need is ACC here at the house. The cats are all "healthy" and UTD on shots, even all spayed and neutered, She used to foster for the CNYCC and couldn't part with the odd cats. She has a few that need medication on a regular basis, some prone to URI or that are just totally feral and live in the back room/back yard. She spends hundreds of dollars a month on food and medicine for the cats, but she does have a lot of them.

Kill Mold - Bleach---De will dry it out some all the mold spores are still there.

Bree - love your new avatar ..Maybe he was Crowing when the other bird was getting stripped ?

I found the spot where most of the injuries happened, I believe it was the dog. Vader seems to have gotten behind a shelf I laid down for nesting boxes and the feathers extend out threw the fence, not inside it. Also Duane has been doing this for about a week now. 6am to 11ish he crows for every little thing.
