NY chicken lover!!!!

I wake up to a very cloudy morning and pouring down rain, again. Either it gets so very dry and no water in the creek or it rains hard for several days. My garden is looking great. Even the weeds.
Cecilia hatched out 4 chicks on her own and got off her nest. The next day I found a half zipped chick upside down in the nest dead and 1 unhatched egg. I brought it in the house, fired up the incubator, brought in 7 eggs that were under the Twisted Sisters and Cecilia's egg hatched. 24 hours later I took it out and placed it under her, not knowing if it would make it and all is well so far. Because of the rain, I've left them in the coop today.
Edited to say, Just the mom and babies. Cecila can hold her own very well, but don't want everyone inside. The run is covered with a tarp so the others can keep dry.

Well son came in and told me that a chicken is pecking an egg in small coop. So I go out there and there is a light Sussex egg out of her next box in corner by it. The red had egg on beak. I'm none too happy about this chicken. Going to get golf balls and put in there and the plastic egg. May fill an egg with dish washing liquid see what she does. At least I know whats happening now though. I don't really give goodies that much mabe every few days some grapes. Some eggs scrambled if we have left overs now and then.

Try giving them more animal protein. Turkey, chicken, liver, etc. they are missing something in their nutrition if they are breaking eggs. Tops had packages of gizzards and hearts for under $2 I cut them up and gave to my hens. I try to give them animal protein a few times a week. My hens and pullets don't even break open the fart eggs I occasionally get. They won't eat them till after I break them open.

You can also feed back egg shells for calcium for the hens, my laying girls eat them up but the pullets pass them by, they know what they need in their nutrition

Morning Everyone,
We ended up going to the track yesterday. Didn't get home till midnight and the kids didn't let me sleep in much this morning.

The rain has ruined my plans of getting stuff done around the yard today. Hope it clears up at some point, I have a pool to empty out and deflate. The chickens are all running around soaked, ducks are loving this weather of course. Still no eggs from the big girls. This is really starting to bother me. I have three bigger hens and NONE are laying. The BR was giving me an egg every two days or so but nothing in the last week.

Jlaw I hope the fair season gets better we want to go to a few on August. Even meat birds should looks decent the ones we seen at our breeder looked good. Anywho I'm glad you found the culprit you can now deal with the problem.

Sally sorry for you lost. Hope the rest hatch

PhArm so I'm glad you have a day to rest imma clean myself and then do homework.

Yesterday I weeded my garden and other chores. Today we went out and bought 7 ton of wood pellets for winter. I want to make sure I have everything taken care of before I go out on maternity leave. I'm hoping to make it to the regional market in the next couple weeks in Syracuse for pickling cukes and tomatoes. My girls cleared out my homemade pickles. They love them.

My pekin ducks are horrible brooders. They sit but keep moving the nest and then the eggs don't hatch. They try sitting all summer.

I hear that Muscovy ducks are great brooders and mothers. Perhaps you need to get a couple of them to sit on the eggs you want hatched and raise the ducklings? I hear that they can even hatch chicken eggs, but get very confused when the chicks won't get in the water to swim. LOL It looks like I might have 2 hens and one drake from the 3 that my chicken hatched for me. If you are interested, perhaps I can hatch you a couple next year.

I would do a egg hunt ..get the kids in on it ..I bet they are laying some where .

OK been off a few days got lots of stuff to do around here before I have to have this broken wing operated on again plus hubby has surgery coming up in August so spending most of the time getting stuff done. Tons of posts to catch up on.

Lynzi the barn is a bunch of pens for the chickens and turkeys Ducks have their own houses and am in the process of having another barn built which will be for my chickens and at least a pen for pigs. Don't ask how many chickens I have I am sucking at chicken math.

Tab where did you get your pellets and how much were they? Got to get 5 ton myself.

Rancher close your eyes LOL! I am loving my silkies and just got a nice pair of Lavendar and Porcelain silkies last week they are so calm and quiet compared to the other chickens. Maybe when they get bigger I might get a broody hen. I still have no broody hens.

I have to work tomorrow have a few more weeks of class then will be on break for a few weeks then it will be start of fall semester so will be back to work for me. Next year I am not working during summer break I am taking the whole summer off.

Good luck getting everything done nutty! I hope that by the surgeries are done you two can just relax!

Egg production is slow here but I have only three laying hens the rest are teens. But my sex links are 21wks so with in the next month they should be laying.

cleaning up some more today mostly organizing.
