NY chicken lover!!!!

Where in Central NY are you? That way we can point you in the right direction. There are quite a few of us on here and all over.
Syracuse area -- about as central as you can get!

Though I'm out of state at the moment -& hoping to move back to Broome asap- I read this forum with interest, so I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on the hawks vs netting issue. I'm a veteram and currently live in a town next to an Army post, so military surplus is fairly easy to come by here. I have hawks in my area and use a cot-sized mosquito net over my 10x20 run. I have another friend who got a larger cammo net to deal with a cooper's hawk problem in their large hen pen. Both options have worked really well. Sometimes the cammo net kits can even be found, these contain the poles and umbrella-like paddles that make the net tent-like. My mosquito net has also detered squirrels from stealing feed.

Wow, so much to keep up with.
I went back to work Monday

3 months of being off just wasn't for me anymore.

Glass, keep the coyote up there, I don't want him

Lynzi, I love 'em

I'm in total agreement about Nature Berry. That's where our frizzles came from and are doing great.

I haven't candled any eggs yet, probably tomorrow. Hopefully in 3 wks we'll have some more silkies running around.
Guess I'll go back though the last few days of the thread and see what I missed.

Evening all,
Just got done rounding the ducks up! Everyone's in for the night and I no longer have to go for a run! I've been trying to get a quote for the last week from the Amish Structures on they're smallest coop they make, a 3x5 A-Frame and they have yet to give one to me. He keeps responding with the brochure for. 10x16 @ $1600 delivered. I've informed him I do not need something nearly that large! So I'm growing tired and I'm probably going to find someone with the skills to build me something nice. These coops I have are still in good shape but I know they probably won't make it thru more two more winters. I really just want something bigger for my silkies since those are the birds I will be focusing most of my efforts with as far as breeding and such. Anywho......

ke5hde ~ I was wondering where you've been....glad to hear your happy back at work! I'm done the 23rd with my job, think you guys are going to get sick of hearing from me all day! Lol

JLaw ~ good luck with your hatch!!

Glass ~ I hope you get a handle on that coyote and are able to keep it away from your flock!

I think I have to check out this Nature Berry farm, sounds nice! I'm picking up another khaki Campbell on Thursday. Turns out I had a late bloomer and I DO have another drake, not two ducks and drake. His bill is just starting to change from that dark color to a greenish yellow. And he's getting some dark squares on his wings. And he's been making more of a hissing sound than a quack like my one duck. So I'm picking up a duck. I just don't know if that will be ok-having two ducks and two drakes?? They don't fight or anything so I don't see it being a problem yet....I just worry if the ducks will take a beating when they're ready to breed. We'll see I guess.

I've got a dozen Marraduna Basque chicks happily growing by the minute. I had originally intended to share some of this flock with my sister and mother, but already know that I'm not parting with a single one of these babies for the time being (probably ever!).

So my predicament is this: I feel obligated to help the other two households in my family find some nice laying (or close to laying) hens. 4 to 6 total. I would appreciate any assistance in that area (and will happily pay for hens -- not looking for a handout!), should anyone be downsizing in the larger CNY area. Heritage breeds preferred, but all options considered.

Welcome ! What cuties you have ...We really do fall in love with them dont We ?
I dont have any extra myself ...no heritage that I know of just mutts ...My Australorp Roo might be though .
There are quite a few in the SYR area ..I live near Jordan .
Or you could just give the family the eggs ..

you do the work ...Lots of folks do that .

Miquwid thank you for not wanting me to miss the pleasure of paying bills it is the highlight of my week

Tab ok 3 more weeks then you can have peanut you want to go to at least 36 weeks to be safe let us know what the doctor says have a feeling you might be getting pulled out of work.

I spent my day today doing not much of nothing just chatting on the phone and relaxing felt nice.

Did get hay delivered today so will be ok for the winter.

Tomorrow have to go to TSC and get some more wood shavings boy do I go through a ton of them hubby says I change the pens to often but I don’t want stink or maggots so don’t know what to do was thinking of doing sand and scopping out the mess but then you have all that urine just sitting on the bottom of the sand.

Lilly the pit-bull puppy that was dropped off is gimping around here whimpering all day, yesterday she got her paw stuck under the couch when she was trying to jump on the couch and I was sure it was broke but vet did x-rays and it is just soft tissue damage so she has anti-inflammatory pain med and crate rest I feel so bad cause she just wants to get out and play but if I let her out she tries to run around with other dogs and starts whining. The little pork chop has went from being 6.5lbs when we found her which she should have weighed about 12lbs to a healthy 21lbs.

Need a good butcher for a few chickens. I live in central square. Anyone know a good person to butcher a few chickens for me? If so either pm me or just leave an answer. I ordered 24 chicks from Myers hatchery. They should be here September 24-26. Sooooo excited. We will not eat theses ones. They are for eggs/ breeding only. Anyone have good experience with them?

I do I'll let you know later. Names Faith.

New chick born, this one a Lavender. Not sure but I think it may be an Orp. Green egg was squashed with chick poor thing that makes two out of five that didn't survive the hatch. Don't know why. One more green egg to go.

Plan to unload a lot of roos. Even my CR, in hopes that in spring I can get some eggs to hatch. Plus there are more than a few BM's. Only one a keeper this time out. And I've decided to get rid of my Lavender Amer roo too.

Gotta run.
