NY chicken lover!!!!

Howdy all! Back from Georgia and getting my daughters settled into their new apt. Youngest had her white coat ceremony for pharmacy and my oldest (the one whos fiance dumped her) got a great job offer and will start work next week. Looks like a career for her. It was a good day all around that day and we are all very happy with how things are working out. We went to the largest indoor flea market in Pendergrass. It was interesting. The one thing that got me was the animals outside for sale. It was hot that day and all these poor chickens and ducks were crowded into small cages with no water and little food. I was very upset to see this. Some were in the sun and panting so hard. The poor silkies looked like they were about to die. I had to leave because I hate to see any animal suffer needlessly. On a happy note, the cheeps are happy we are home but we have another egg eater. She will be eaten as well. I guess we can call it downsizing for the winter. I only got to read a little bit while I was gone and there are too many pages to read to catch up on. I hope that everyones troubles go away and things are well for everyone.

I'm pretty sure that my Speckled Sussex is a rooster. Didn't really want a rooster this year, was thinking about it for maybe next year. I'll have to wait and see how he ends up. Right now he is on the bottom of the pecking order and is still super shy. If I have to get rid of him, I'm not sure what I'll do. The kids and I really like him so far. I'll have to wait and see.

Do any of you have veggie gardens? How are yours doing. Mine this year isn't doing well at all. I start most of my plants inside and most died so needed to replant and got off to a late start, then we had a stretch with really hot and dry weather which stunted them. And then in the beginning of July we got a flood that went right through it, needless to say that our garden isn't doing well. Looks like I'll be buying more veggies this winter. I get so sad when I'm out there. By this time last year I had a ton of veggies in the freezer and a few batches of pickles and tomatoes canned. I was out there yesterday and I finally have 2 little pumpkins starting to grow, but not much else is happening. The only thing that is growing well is the dumb weeds. It is discouraging. I was looking to double the size of my garden next year and now I'm having second thoughts.
We plan for our garden to provide as much of our produce as possible for the whole year. This year it will be back to the farmer's markets for us, sadly. We have a huge garden and only about 2/3 of it is in production due to all of the problems you described. We're in the same boat with trying not to become discouraged. Good to remember that there's always next year!

Since I switched their food and used that salve they have been doing well. The snow can stay away till November

I use eucalyptus oil diluted in water in a spray bottle. I have never had bugs in my coops but it is suppose to be a deterant. I think it just smells nice in the coop

I like the idea of eucalyptus oil ... where do you get this?

Thx.

My garden has been finicky as well this year. Tried the "square foot" method and everything is so cramped. I even have cattle panel trellis for the squash and cukes to climb, but they rather crawl across the lawn and neighboring veggies. Have gotten yellow squash, but hardly any zucchini. Got a big batch of cukes and made 27 jars of dill pickles. Nothing else harvestable yet.
I would like to expand our garden next year too. Have seen on Pinterest what I would like to try but no idea how to do it. Involves a steep bank and creating 'steps' to grow in. I have the spot for it. Too steep to mow, west facing would get lots of afternoon sun.

Just wanted to share...
Been a lot going on with me lately, maybe some major changes coming. It won't be for a couple years (maybe less), but we're looking into moving to western NC. NY is too hard on small business and we're sick of it. Not to mention the winters that drag on forever.
The other major change... I'm looking at a career change. Teacher aide positions are few and far between in NC and what there is pays squat. I'm looking into getting my CNA (certified nurse's assistant) and then possibly going further into nursing. Big change, seeing as I'm a teacher aide for primary school kids. Maybe I could eventually get into pediatrics. Looking into courses and may be starting in a few weeks.

Best of luck and hope things fall into place for you.....sounds like a smart plan.....BUT for selfish reasons, I wish you'd stay in NY and on the NY BYC thread!

Welcome back, Pharm.

I'm glad things are looking up for your daughter who recently went through such heartbreak.

That's horrible about the poor treatment of the flea market poultry for sale. People are so careless, clueless and some time, just cruel.

Hi - I'm not Armourfirelady but I got mine at a Wegman's grocery store. Where all the vitamins and health foods are. I carried it in my purse for a week. Some leaked out and smells nice. lol

Pharm--Glad your trip went well

Armorfirelady-- Thanks I plan on trying that ointment

Chickprincess-- Good luck

My garden is producing enough for meals but not much extra. I've started adding some plant food and it looks to be helping. I'm hoping it'll give me a later bumper crop.

My garden this year is off as well, although its probably my fault, I didn't plant it until mid June....I do have cukes and beans, kale & lettuce, brussel sprouts galore, but no peppers.but out of 10 tomato plants I think there are 3 tomatoes. If there are no tomatoes started yet, its too late. I usually go & cut off all the branches that just have flowers to let the plant put its energy into the existing tomatoes ripening. Good thing I will have tomatoes sauce left over from last year...

We had good garlic & Onions are coming along ok, but not very big. Basil did well also. That's about it.

Now, my flower garden is full of weeds...too much rain, not time to week, and some health issues prevented me from doing anything. Its pathetic...sigh
