I'm canning salsa now (water bath), but finished reading the directions for my pressure canner that I've had for over a year and haven't been brave enough to use. I don't know why, but I'm scared to use it. lol I have a huge 23 qt canner... better make use of it!

Now now don't be afraid. Just follow the directions and you'll be fine. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER leave things on the stove unattended. I used to have one but gave it to my niece years ago. Now I'm back into it and need a new one. Though this year the garden was a wash. Maybe next year.

I left a baby bottle on the stove and had to paint the ceiling. TWICE!! Milk sprayed out the nipple like a volcano. I'm thankful that's all I had to do.

Rancher, I have crab apples. I'm not sure if they're the eating kind though. Kinda small and really red. You're welcome to them if you want.

The wife and I are going to the fair tomorrow if anyone else is going. We'll be there bright and early, around 9am.

I'd like to go but I've got way to much to do. The yard needs mowing and coops need cleaning. It rained but I can still clean and weed whack. Plus I need to get some feed.

I've got a frizzle rooster and two other barred chicks. though not chicks if anyone is interested. I also have two BM chicks pullet and roo I'll give up too. Though not quite chicks any of them. Mothers have quit brooding and they're roosting pretty much. Is there any interest. I'll give them away if I have to. Trades are always nice too.

That will still leave me with four chicks. Not including all the del chicks and frizzle pullet.

I don't live to far from the fair grounds and can meet you at the mall.

I went out this morning and waited for one to poop. It looked just like chicken poop to me. Not runny or pasty. My wife asked what I was doing, when I told her, she just shook her head and walked away

Okay folks now you know I love you but. There is to much worrying about poops. If in fact that is what you were doing. Chickens like you poop depending on what they eat. You eat lots of plums and you're running for the outhouse. Well it's the same way with chickens only we don't know what happens to their poops when they eat to many grass hoppers.

To much bread and I start to get funny shelled eggs, (from my hens) so I don't buy bread for them anymore. To much scratch and mine don't lay well so some days they get none.

So if you want to see what a chicken will poop for what they eat, eat the same things and check it out. I suggest you start with worms and stone and crickets.

There is a poop page you've seen? All that I've told you is from what I've read. Especially the part about worrying over every perceived abnormal poop. I read both Practical Poultry magazine and the Back Yard Poultry magazine. IMO the two best chicken publications for the back yard chickener.

DH and the girls are headed down to Ithaca for his family reunion today. The doctor told me that he didn't recommend I go because he doesn't know what action will put me back in labor. I am taking it easy at home watching PBS today.
My BLRW are molting and look awful, but the young stock for breeding in spring are looking nice. My leghorns from TSC are laying now and hopefully the next hatches after these guys will be starting soon.

Morning Everyone,
DH didn't have to go into work yesterday so we did the fair with the kids. I think we really ended up only going thru half of it - A couple of buildings, got some food, and the kids played games and went on some rides. We did walk thru the poultry building. My husband couldn't believe how many silkies there were. I was a little shocked at that. I thought I would have seen more variety with the birds. Maybe I missed a section

?? I was worried about going in there and seeing a breed I would have wanted to add to my flock but I didn't really see anything I liked. Had to venture over to the Dino tent of course to check in on his staff. Didn't realize how big Dino does it at the fair with Gianelli. The line there was insane. Other than that, kids had a good time. I was more than ready to leave when we did. I forgot how tiring going to a fair with kids could be, it's been a while since we've gone to one.

Chicken life is good here. However I went to take a look at my silkies this morning and the two splash chicks I have are both cockerels!

So if anyone is interested I will offer them up here before posting them on CL. I really don't need anymore roos. I have my one lavender roo and thats all I want to work with right now. I would have kept one of the splash if it was a hen but I see little red waddles on both.

They hatched 6/21 so they're a little over 2 months old now.

I have 6 eggs set aside for the bator. I think I'm going to do one last hatch when I'm up to 8 or so eggs since I now have my brooder box empty for when the chicks are too big to be inside. Ducks are back to their house with the run attached, so at night they have the choice of going in or staying in the run.

Was going to build a larger run for the silkies but now that I'll be getting rid of two there's really no need to. There will only be 2 silkies and a frizzle in there. My friend wants my other blue chick that hatched in early July. It only has 4 toes but she just wants them as pets so it doesn't matter to her.

They split the poultry up. Week 1 is different birds than week 2, though some birds I saw seemed to have been there for both weeks! (not to mention the number of sick birds I saw!)

We went through there early today and were disgusted at the condition of the birds. Lots of molting birds and so many that were sick, we turned around and walked back out. Lots of bleach for the shoes later.
I think most of us have better looking birds than we saw in there.

That's what I figured. Seems like they were maybe Bantams yesterday. I didn't see too many larger breeds. Some of them definitely seemed sick. Depressed looking too, like they had been sititng in those cages for too long.

They split the birds up. The first 5 days are the large breeds. Tuesday was the change day and the last 5 are the bantam breeds. I went on Wednesday with the kids and went in. Before I had my girls I would have never thought that they looked so bad. Now that I know what I'm looking at I was disgusted. I saw a few that looked like they had broken feet. I feel bad..I still love the colored silkies. I know that is bad, but it is the kid in me!
