NY chicken lover!!!!

They split the poultry up. Week 1 is different birds than week 2, though some birds I saw seemed to have been there for both weeks! (not to mention the number of sick birds I saw!)

A friend said she saw one that was dead. Many get disqualified for cooties too.

Now on my chicken front: I decided to take the two chicks in the BM coop and move them since the Lav orp chick was not doing well. Not thriving like the other black one. Well I moved them to a clean brooder with a light and wouldn't you know it the dang light went out. I found the lav at deaths door and the other gone. Well I quickly put in a new light but it was to late. The one I could not find somehow made it into the garage which has bales of hay in temporarily. The difference between the two was amazing. The little guy was doing just fine. I managed to get it and put it back in the coop.

I cleaned the coop today and put the little guy in a bucket which, even though I had blocked it, got out and took off with the three mother hens. So there it is out and ranging. I said to heck with it!

I noticed today that the two non frizzled cuckoo chicks are pullet and roo. I'll be posting them to CL as soon as I get a camera. I expect them to be medium sized.

I worked on the herb garden today. Clearing and cutting over grown herbs back with the weed whacker. Boy the smell of spearmint was great on the sinuses. I just mowed every thing down.

I planted some Thai basil last year and this year it's doing better only it's not in the bed I planted it! The bees loved it. The lavender and mint flowers were a great attraction.

I'm moving all the mints and lemon balm to around the chicken runs. Even if I mow it down it should be okay.

Wanted to share a pic I took of well, what I wanted to be the ducks ( I've been trying to get them to be not so skittish around me when I go up to the coops by taking some feed out of the can and placing it on the ground in front of me and just waiiting there patiently for them to come get it. My goal is to show them of course that I'm not going to go after them, try to pet them, I'm not even going to move but just watch them eat. Just want them to be as comfortable around us as the chickens are.) So today I went up there, sprinkled some feed down on the ground, and waited. Well my son's BO mix came over and claimed the pile hers. All the ducks were trying to get at it but she would just turn her head like "don't even think about it!" LOL

I've decided to call the two Magpies "Phineas and Ferb" because they're always up to no good. Lol

They split the birds up. The first 5 days are the large breeds. Tuesday was the change day and the last 5 are the bantam breeds. I went on Wednesday with the kids and went in. Before I had my girls I would have never thought that they looked so bad. Now that I know what I'm looking at I was disgusted. I saw a few that looked like they had broken feet. I feel bad..I still love the colored silkies. I know that is bad, but it is the kid in me!

What's even more funny than these silkies, are the people who were gawking at them yesterday saying "I never knew there were pink and purple chickens!" I swear my husband smacked me in the arm as I turned my head towards them to say something. LOL We walked away and he was like Just let it go! LOL I really did feel bad for these birds.

I did say something. Danielle has learned over the years to just let me go. I probably could have entered Bob and won with him :)

I went to a chicken show last year, and although I didn't see any molting birds, I saw lots of puffy eyes and open mouthed breathing. I soaked my shoes in oxine when I got home. :)

I really wanted to go to the fair, but it's three hours from here and I just got lazy. I should be studying for my finals. :p

Oh and one of the little pullets I hatched from county boy's cochin eggs is now broody!! Heck, I am not even sure she's laid more than a few eggs. She's sitting on a bunch of tiny pullet bantam eggs. Will those even be viable if fertile?

Hello all,
I'm from the huge metropolis of Potter, NY - pop. 1865!! We have 15 acres mixed woodland/wetlands. Although I work part-time, we are trying our hardest to be homesteaders and grow what we need. We currently have only 8 hens - RIR, Welsummers, Delaware whites & 1 Dominique. My girls are spoilt, but they repay with eggs and laughs. Going to be getting more hens next year, so am currently extending the housing.
Anyone live nearby?? Love to hear from anyone in the area, Sue

I'm located about 20 mins South of Syracuse but travel to the Finger Lake area when I go to the outlets in Waterloo. Been out to the Rochester area once or twice too. so you're not too too far from me. There are quite a few on here that are from the Syracuse and Rochester areas.

Thank you! I was going to go to the Bath poultry auction early September, but having read the posts here, I don't think I will. I hate to see poorly/ sickly animals caged up for all to gawk at. I did go several years ago and the birds seemed to be ok. but back then I didn't know a Yokohama from a bahamamama!
