NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello all,
I'm from the huge metropolis of Potter, NY - pop. 1865!! We have 15 acres mixed woodland/wetlands. Although I work part-time, we are trying our hardest to be homesteaders and grow what we need. We currently have only 8 hens - RIR, Welsummers, Delaware whites & 1 Dominique. My girls are spoilt, but they repay with eggs and laughs. Going to be getting more hens next year, so am currently extending the housing.
Anyone live nearby?? Love to hear from anyone in the area, Sue

Hi Sue! I'm in Canandaigua. I was in Potter (or close to it) today buying produce from the Mennonites. I'm closer to Bristol but always on the other side of town shopping and such.

Hi! I'm from the Finger Lakes also. (And a Sue, too) Hornby, NY. Population 1742. (It says it was last done in 2000, lol). I'm between Corning and Watkins Glen. I have around 30 chickens of various breeds. 3 Turkeys, dogs, cats, goldfish and Pester, the bunny. Glad to hear from you. Oh, on the poultry auction in Bath. I went this past spring for the first time. I was horrified. So many sickly birds. I mostly noticed nasty bottoms. (I do realize that they had been confined in boxes all day). But I felt horrible for them. I won't go again.

Welcome! My husband was down that way today even though we don't live there ourselves.

What's even more funny than these silkies, are the people who were gawking at them yesterday saying "I never knew there were pink and purple chickens!" I swear my husband smacked me in the arm as I turned my head towards them to say something. LOL We walked away and he was like Just let it go! LOL I really did feel bad for these birds.

I heard someone say the wondered what color eggs they lay. They thought that they must be the ones that lay the easter eggs. I think that they must be "city folks" !

LOL...My cousins called cows "moo moo horsies" until they were 10 years old. City folks indeed. (NJ city folks to boot. LOL)

We went through there early today and were disgusted at the condition of the birds. Lots of molting birds and so many that were sick, we turned around and walked back out. Lots of bleach for the shoes later.
I think most of us have better looking birds than we saw in there.

I am no poultry expert by a long shot, but I thought the same thing. Not every bird, but enough that I definitely noticed a striking difference between my birds and lots of those in the cages.

Isn't there supposed to be a vet that checks out the birds before they are allowed to enter the fair? I understand that it is stressful on the birds, but for birds to look that sick? I wouldn't have been surprised to find a dead bird there. Some of those birds looked half dead anyway when I went.
Makes me feel much better about my flock, even my barebacked girl (she's too easy).

Rancher & Stony,

If you have a few moments and wouldn't mind sharing your recipes for crab apple jelly, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you!

I'm wondering if the crab apples (small greenish ones) on my mother's tree are worth bothering with, though. We've never sprayed the tree or done a thing with it, so I imagine the fruit is loaded with worms? Her neighbor has either a different species of crab apple or an actual apple tree, because the apples are larger and have a reddish cast. They are not as large as regular apples, but close. The neighbor doesn't do a thing with them, so maybe I could ask to pick them and give him some of the jelly if they are worth processing.

Anyway.....THANKS!
