NY chicken lover!!!!

Wanted to share a pic I took of well, what I wanted to be the ducks ( I've been trying to get them to be not so skittish around me when I go up to the coops by taking some feed out of the can and placing it on the ground in front of me and just waiiting there patiently for them to come get it. My goal is to show them of course that I'm not going to go after them, try to pet them, I'm not even going to move but just watch them eat. Just want them to be as comfortable around us as the chickens are.) So today I went up there, sprinkled some feed down on the ground, and waited. Well my son's BO mix came over and claimed the pile hers. All the ducks were trying to get at it but she would just turn her head like "don't even think about it!" LOL

I've decided to call the two Magpies "Phineas and Ferb" because they're always up to no good. Lol

Now you need to get them to build a roller coaster in the backyard :)

Rancher & Stony,

If you have a few moments and wouldn't mind sharing your recipes for crab apple jelly, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you!

I'm wondering if the crab apples (small greenish ones) on my mother's tree are worth bothering with, though. We've never sprayed the tree or done a thing with it, so I imagine the fruit is loaded with worms? Her neighbor has either a different species of crab apple or an actual apple tree, because the apples are larger and have a reddish cast. They are not as large as regular apples, but close. The neighbor doesn't do a thing with them, so maybe I could ask to pick them and give him some of the jelly if they are worth processing.

Anyway.....THANKS!

here is the one I use. Goolge will give you many choices. This one is really simple. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/mary-wynnes-crabapple-jelly/

I really don't know haw many tree's we have. A dozen crab and a dozen wild apple maybe, maybe more. We have never ever sprayed any tree and never had a bug problem. I grew up here and in my 46 years have only found worms in the occational apple that was already on the ground.;

absolutely nothing. Too easy to get for free. Every property my wife cares for has apple tree's and we have at least 2 dz our selves.

The tree I was showing a while back has and does produce apples that are about the size of golf balls. (I guess I'd forgotten) I've never tasted them but after all the talk here I'm going to try. It might be a lot of work even to make jelly. Crab apple jelly IS the best.

do you house your chicken and ducks together? I have mine in the same coop but separated in the winter by hardware cloth and fencing.

we also hit the state fair this year, my husband wanted to know how they got the chickens that color without hurting them. I said prob food coloring. I felt bad for all the chickens and ducks penned up. if mine had to be in a pen like that, they would prob die!!! I really felt that the pens were dirty---I guess I am being snobbish.

My dad picked me a bag of apples from the tree we always picked when I was growing up last night. Dad and DH are golfing this morning and he's sending them home with him. I don't think peeling apples while sitting will be considered breaking my bed rest.

Nutty-- It's great your DH has caught the chicken fever!
