NY chicken lover!!!!

Yes they are. But they can FLY, so it is a rare day when a roo actually catches them. My chickens are all sizes and no one has a problem with that. HOWEVER I do not tolerate a rooster that is aggressive to the point of it being rape. They taste yummy and there are so many roosters to choose from, I just keep the nice ones.
how many roosters can you safely keep? I have 1 Sussex roo to 9 hens right now and 9 juniors that I hatched from a Sussex roo and several of his girls---- have no clue who is gonna be who --7 weeks old at moment---

do you house your chicken and ducks together?  I have mine in the same coop but separated in the winter by hardware cloth and fencing.

They all free range and are housed separately at night. I've caught the khakis trying to go in with the chickens at night but that was before I added a few more ducks. Now the each go to their own pens at night.

I have 1 Australorp roo to 10 hens, ( flock # 1 ) & 33 hens of various breeds to 1 Blue barred rock roo & 1 Lav Am roo ( as soon as he's out of quarantine ! )( flock #2 ) and numerous youngsters running around the yard ( ages 5 mon to wks ).................. many of which are roos

What type of Sussex do you have ? I've been trying for 2 summers now to get a flock of Speckled Sussex going. My luck sucks with this breed. Last years I lost all my chicks, this year I ended up with 11 roos & 1 pullet. I'm thinking it's just not meant to be. !

we also hit the state fair this year, my husband wanted to know how they got the chickens that color without hurting them.  I said prob food coloring.  I felt bad for all the chickens and ducks penned up.  if mine had to be in a pen like that, they would prob die!!!  I really felt that the pens were dirty---I guess I am being snobbish.

Not snobbish at all. I think most, if not all of us that went this year felt the same way. We have pondered in the past about showing but have decided against it. It's just not worth a ribbon to me if I have to come back with birds that have been exposed to a disease.

lots and lots of apples this year, chickens are enjoying eating them.  however....doesn't that mean a hard winter is coming?

I can only hope we get a good hard winter. It's been a while since we've been able to put a couple thousand miles on the sleds in a season.

he is the chicken that my grandson is holding in my avatar. he is a gentle giant and very protective. I have no female Sussex, only rir, br and mixed leghorns. I have one black iridescent hen that I think is the mother to 3 of the chicks that hatched.

daddy is our Sussex pictured below(molting)

he was moving , this was the best pic I could get--he has huge waddles and a very large comb
