NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello Princess,
We were at the Mennonite quilt auction yesterday. Most of the 'typical' quilts went for around $3-400 apiece!! but we picked up an unusual denim quilt for under $200........I see more overtime in my future!
Are you over on the Millers' nursery side of the lake?

Hello all,
I'm from the huge metropolis of Potter, NY - pop. 1865!! We have 15 acres mixed woodland/wetlands. Although I work part-time, we are trying our hardest to be homesteaders and grow what we need. We currently have only 8 hens - RIR, Welsummers, Delaware whites & 1 Dominique. My girls are spoilt, but they repay with eggs and laughs. Going to be getting more hens next year, so am currently extending the housing.
Anyone live nearby?? Love to hear from anyone in the area, Sue

Being as you'd like to be homesteaders you've come to the right place. Join us also on the "What are you canning " thread for some really good recipes and tips. Or the Granny square Swap thread and meet some talented people from all over the country. The coop threads are sure to give you lots of innovative ways to build new coops from recycled materials.

You're going to love BYC.

Delaware whites ? Just wondered. I have Delaware and they only come in White with barring.

Quick question for those of you who use ACV in your birds' water: how much do you put in a gallon? I'm starting to think that the guineas' problems are a digestive imbalance so I want to get them some ACV and yogurt and I was wondering how much ACV to put in their water.

My dad picked me a bag of apples from the tree we always picked when I was growing up last night. Dad and DH are golfing this morning and he's sending them home with him. I don't think peeling apples while sitting will be considered breaking my bed rest.

Nutty-- It's great your DH has caught the chicken fever!

If you have a food mill do like I do. I just core the apples and throw them in the pot peels and all, and cook them down. Them run them through the mill set to what every size you want. I like sauce a little chunky.

Now for Jelly what I do is run them through the bag and squeeze out the juice using one layer of cheese cloth. Then put it in a pitcher and let it sit over night in the fridge. All the solid stuff will settle in the bottom. Then I use two layers of cheese cloth and pour the juice through stopping at the "sludge" in the bottom.

I have two recipes for sauce if anyone is interested. One has nutmeg, cloves and other stuff. Comes out tasting like pie filling. Everyone likes it.

The sludge and stuff from the mill can be given to the animals to eat. Apple cores go to the compost pile. Nothing goes to waste. Well except the jelly which goes to my waist.

I use a glut or 2. I don't really measure it. I haven't used it at all this summer but that's cuz it's in their ff

I use ACV occasionally. Once a week or so. Just about a table spoon to a gallon of water. I've read that to often and it could put them off drinking.

This of course is my opinion. You are sure to get many.

I am a contributing author on a Homesteading web site. I would be glad to send you the link if you are interested. Our HUGe metropolix of Canaan has a whopping population of 1750 and it is a huge town with everyone spread out on 30 to 200 acres.

I think that fits the bill perfectly

. Gives you something constructive to do without having to move much at all. I'm getting ready to grab far too many apples to peel myself. Last nights storm knocked a lot down. Time to process them up.

here is the one I use. Goolge will give you many choices. This one is really simple. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/mary-wynnes-crabapple-jelly/

I really don't know haw many tree's we have. A dozen crab and a dozen wild apple maybe, maybe more. We have never ever sprayed any tree and never had a bug problem. I grew up here and in my 46 years have only found worms in the occational apple that was already on the ground.;

Thanks a bunch, Stony.

My mom said she'd give a hand, so this is going to be a project for us to do together this month.
