NY chicken lover!!!!

poor girl! When I went out today I noticed one of my barred rocks is in shambles. Feathers missing everywhere, poor thing. One of my roosters lost his entire tail and is growing it back. He looks ridiculous.

My GLW roo lost all flight feathers on both wings. He was hilarious to watch run, was temporarily named "Stumpy". Now just his neck is still looking ratty.

Pyxis,

your chicks are so sweet.  They look like the quintessential Easter basket chick, little puffs of buttery down.  Best of luck with your new start on a breeding flock.  Also, hope your late hatcher starts to gain strength quickly.

More on County Boy -

his birds aren't just beautiful, they're exceptional.  County Boy, maybe you should look into a career in animal husbandry, etc.  Cornell is relatively close!

I love animals and what not but I would eventually like to go west where there is better deer hunting as around here the first buck somebody sees gets shot. My true passion is in the woods.:D But, I always plan to have chickens and would like to continue trying to get the colors I have to be a recognized variety for Cochins in the APA and ABA. Right now everything I have is not considered a true color in Cochins. I think soon the Mille Fleur cochins will be and the Buff Barred is really close. SO, we will se where my road takes me. But. like I said, my dream right now is to go to an area with better deer management.;)

This is what I woke up to this morning. A pretty good day :love

I just got one from Nature Berry Farms, funny everyone else in the area had nice puffs but me :-( She does have cool colors though
That's where I got Ollie (the SF). I wonder how many more of those he had running around in the roo pen turned into pullets.

How are you holding that all together. I might just make one. Lord knows there are lots of branches around here. Will you be covering it with poultry wire or hardware cloth?
With A LOT of screws. They have been the most expensive part. I started out on the front section doing it all by hand, bad idea.
I finally got 2 drills one with a drill bit, one with the bit tip and a circular saw instead of the hand saw (my cuts weren't as close fitting but it went a lot faster with the circular).
Drill the center at each end of the stick, drill hole through whatever other stick it will be fit up against, I tried to have the screw long enough to go at least one inch deep into the perpendicular stick.....I feel like I explained that poorly, here's a picture!

Oh the magic of power point....
I'll get some closer pictures tomorrow so you can see where the supports are. But it's different for each wall depending on the sticks I had available.

Right now I have chicken wire over the majority of it with hardware cloth buried along the edges, this weekend i'm putting the heavier fencing with the 1"x2" openings over the chicken wire. I can't afford hardware cloth for the whole thing right now.

No you did very well thank you.

So I wonder. I noticed the ad for Cardiology. Do we all see the same ads? I was just looking up symptoms of a heart attack and yes I am concerned. I've had pain on the left side for days but more to the rib area. After I ate, and I ate to much, I wasn't feeling so well. Better now though. Still I will call the doc tomorrow. I don't think it's my heart though.

again with the ads? Do we all see the same ads, or are we being targeted?

It looks like the hen that Sunnyside posted is pretty dark and a little mis-colored (still pretty though!). If yours is too that would explain why he was selling them as roosters. With SF you can sex the chicks by color at about two weeks if the coloring is correct - my guess is it wasn't and that's what happened. Other than that I have no idea why he would think they were roos

My defiant little bantam cochins insisting on going broody. They laid so many eggs in the shavings bag they are spilling out on the floor

At first I thought they were relaxing on a bean bag chair. lol

My advice would be to follow your heart. My son always wanted to be a conservationist but didn't follow through. He now works on CAD machines that have something to do with making screws to put people back together. He's 36 and he's a happy Dad with 3 little ones under 5. He says he wouldn't trade it for anything but wishes he followed through with the Yellowstone program. I would bet that people would rarely get a 2nd chance.

Please don't wait too long. I know that symptoms are different for people. My mother just had a heart attack and had trouble breathing and felt a lot of pressure in her chest. Having said that, I hate that eating too much feeling! lol

Pyxis, I would let them hatch and brood their chicks, but I am short on coop space. They are such itty bitty little things they are getting their own small coop for the winter. I have another bantam hen about the same size that grew up with the LF flock and had to separate her and her little ones because the hens just piled on and I was worried they would kill her and her chicks. Gave her babies away and she reintegrated when she only had herself to worry about. The cochins are relatively new and I worry my big marans roosters would eat the little guy alive if I put the four of them in the main coop. Pinky the silkie rooster hid from them all summer and is just starting to feel safe enough to come out and forage.

I just had 19 roosters processed. Most of them were in a separate grow out pen, but two were with the main flock and there was a lot of bickering and chasing. Took a page from Rancher's book and gave away 4 pullets and 6 bantams. Down to a manageable flock now with 8 pens, but having to do some juggling with ducks, turkeys, LF, and bantams. Chicken math at work!

Got home from bringing DD to dance tonight to find all the silkies, frizzles and chicks sleeping under their coop in their run. Wth!? Guess it doesn't matter where they are considering there is no door to close to their coop, it's just open to the run but still. Why the heck are they all huddled up in a ball down under in the run!?

Hoping to get some eggs from my KC duck soon. Should I be putting eggs in the nestbox/duck house so she knows where to lay them??

That's cool, makes sense. Yeah there hasn't been good dear hunting around here lately.

Interesting I don't know. I love going there though.

The ads are tailored to the individual user. Since I take classes online there is always ads for schools but mostly chicken stuff. Google chrome does a great job of blocking so much.
I hope your well.

Good point. My faverolle jumped her pen when we were introducing her to the group this summer and my girls ripped off her leg feathers. So not only does she not have her puffs but her leg feathers are gone LOL I can't win.
