HAWK DETERRENT - CHICKEN DISCO CONE - Found on another thread
LL

dIRECTIONS - I went to Michaels and got a cardboard cone, about 14 inches tall and maybe 5 inches wide at the base (I would suggest getting something more permanent and weather resistant but I was experimenting and will use better supplies when I have to replace the one I have), a few bags of those small 1" mirror tiles, and some construction adhesive from Lowe's. Came home and basically tiled those little mirrors all over that cone then hung it like a windchime so it could spin in the wind. It works like a charm. I haven't seen one hawk since, now I'm not guaranteeing this will definitely work but it seems to work for us. I watch the girls closer when it's cloudy but when the sun shines you can see reflections all over our property, and what's great is the angle of the cone angles straight up into the sky and spins around casting reflections all over.

Woke up this morning to Duane having laryngitis. He tried to crow several times and got nothing out. I am still trying to keep the flock as natural as I can. What can I do to help this other than the things I do now? (Garlic, ACV)

cHECK & SEE IF HE HAS SOMETHING CAUGHT IN HIS THROAT ? sorry caps
any other symptoms ?

Since puberty Duane has become pretty feral. I don't bother him much unless I have to chase him around with a stick so we dont have a lap chicken relationship. Checking inside his mouth would probably result in lost fingers or a chicken with a wrung neck. He lets me pet him a little when he is on the roost at night, so I could probably check tonight but anything would have probably worked itself out by then.

Anyone want an extra mutt young EE roo? Yes, I know, but I had to ask and I hate bringing just one to the auction so he'll have to stay until he can't anymore. So far he's really shy. Daddy is kinda obvious, and momma is one of my easter eggers, going by the big beard. very feathered feet, not sure how he got those unless it's a throwback to grandaddy. :)

Daddy: (he's up for grabs instead if anyone wants him.. love my molting NN girls? :))

Son: (bad pic):

Speaking of Hawkses, I saw a Falcon today near the railroad bridge where pigeons hang out. I may make one of these but out of Styrofoam. I've not seen a bird of prey since the attack this past spring.

In other news I have the incubator going and while not having added water the humidity is holding at 31-32%. The temp is 100.5* which is not a worry since I hatch at higher than 99.5* . I will candle on day seven.

All are Del eggs except for on lone EE. I had planned to only do Dels but one was dented so I just stuck the EE in there to run a full bator.

I still plan to order chicks though.

morning!!!!!!!!!!!!
just had fun with my food processor and some pumpkin innards--
out to the chickens it went. the teenage chickens are eating it. they like to try new things. what was funny was to watch my 14 week old rooster get chased by my 2 year old hen. he hasn't learned to stand up to them yet. hehehehehehehe. the joys of being a chicken owner! entertainment.

I went to the market and bought some Butternut Squashes. I grow them but did not get enough. I plan to buy cheap pumpkins after the end of the month and store them for winter feeding.

How is the humidity in your coop? What has he been eating ? Hold his chest to your ear and listen ? Does he sound sick ?

Just remember Miq, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You'll be done soon and have the reward. You can do this.

I had thought we'd go pick apples today but DD is not feeling well again. She has two weeks to go. DW and I want them to stay here for the next two weeks or at least be dropped off each day. We worry when she's alone with the Queen.

People forget in the olden days when women didn't have help, how many died in childbirth. Not everything in the "old days" was good.

So no apple picking today, but Lord knows there is plenty to do.

DW and I are talking about going to one vehicle. We'll need something to carry feed, hay and the kids , but be gas efficient for her to drive into work each day. Any advice. We figure to save on insurance.
Thanks Rancher.
I hope your DD is well it's tough towards the end I fell sick just for two weeks before I gave birth, and besides soreness I felt %100 better.

I have a rav4 & can fit a ton of feed, hay, etc in it. Plus kids and dogs. I work in the city so 25 miles every day. The gas efficiency is pretty good.

That's a good choice.

Anybody wanna see some frizzles?

OMG I can't wait to get one.
I've had Frenchy and Buckwheat for years. They seem to do fine. Now I have a new girl, but she hasn't a name yet.

I'm not sure why folks downsize in the winter cuz that's the time they need more bodies for heat. Each LF generates 10 watts from what I've read. Their body temp is over 100* .

Frenchy hasn't laid in for a year or more but that's okay. She's the only one left of my first order of chickens. The new girl is Buckwheats, Frenchy's daughter, who I had thought was done too. She laid again this year so I gave as many eggs as I could to the broodies to hatch. Only the new girl and one barred roo were frizzled. I plan to put the new girl in with the EE's or Marans. Buckwheats dad was a CM. She laid darker than normal egg and very smooth. That's how I knew which were her eggs.

Beautiful girl!

It looks great I wll try it.
