NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks I'll have to check that out.

I got a 2012 Ford Escape in July to replace my '95 Ford 150 pickup. The I4 engine is nothing like driving a V8 truck and can't haul a load of hay, but it has been very comfortable to drive and can haul bags of feed. Handles around a parking lot more like a car, which is a plus over the truck. Car seat fits good in it. Depends on how many passengers you need to carry too. I have been averaging about 25.4 mpg.

Today we joined the world of Dog Ownership. I grew up with always having one Border Collie around the farm. Hubby grew up with many and several different breeds of dogs. We weren't certain of this boy when we pulled in, being in the kennel had changed him into a wild looking beast. Barking, running from wall to wall, hair standing up. But once he came out and walked with us, he relaxed a bit and we liked him. When we stopped at TSC to get his food on the way home, he was a changed dog. So happy, tail wagging, and willing to look us in the eye. Got a few compliments on what a nice looking dog and what breed. Shelter said hound mix, he face looks like a red tri-color aussie, his coat is like a shepard. He got a flea/tick bath as soon as we got home and a good brushing. Will need to get him tested for Lyme, the shelter found and pulled a tick off before we left and we found another during the bath. They have problems with Lyme disease in their area, so hoping for the best. Little girl has been trying to get him to play with her, but he is still uncertain of how (and dogs don't play tag). He was very interested in looking at the chickens, so we will start right away with making sure there is not problems with that interaction. Any fellow dog owners have pointers on how to make sure this is a happy encounter? He won't be leashed forever and the chickens are always free ranging. He started clicker training at the kennel, and we intend to continue to ensure a good canine citizen.
He is now happily relaxing at my feet.

My SIL parents had a Ford Escape but have problems with the catalytic converters and the repair is thousands. I don't know what year it is. We did rent an Escape years ago in TX and liked it. We had thought of looking into one before we got this Chevy. We got a great deal on the Chevy so went with it.

My minivan needs shocks and the drivers door won't open and close. I got it closed but have to crawl over the passenger seat to get in.

My husband LOVES them !     Are they just as cold hardy ?  or does the special feathering let more air in ?

Mine do fine in the cold. They lay just as good as my non frizzled girls do but the only bad thing is that they can' really fly just like Silkies and I get a lot of eggs on the floor from my older hens.

Lapeerian, congratulations on your dog! I kept Bella on a leash with me for quite a while when they could interact. Also would have her come with me when I did chicken chore, but stay outside the pen. That worked well, but it is a long time, months, maybe a year. She was fascinated by the chickens and liked to interact by running up to the fence and bouncing, like a play bow, which would get the chickens in a flutter...so I had to speak strongly to her when she started that move...it stopped. Now she tells me when it's time to close them up for the night and watches me do that to be sure all goes well. I pretty much trust her with them, but like with a dog/child interaction, I'm always alert. The consequences of being complacent could be serious. But the chickens need to be in the pen because of the other canine types, the wild ones.

I am so jealous ...I want a dog ...hubby doesnt ...
Did you have to pay for him ? I notice some you have to pay 250.00 like shepards
I ve heard leash him ..and go for dog training with him ..helps

Whenever you first see his body tense when sees the chickens - scold him and I jerk mine's head up or to the side to break the connection.

Now, mine goes right into the chicken net with me as I do the watering - he is more interested in chicken poop and unless a chickie flutters and runs - he ignors them - he has learned that is not acceptable - but we started long distance on a leash .... no fixating or a correction for weeks .... then walked closer .... corrections when he fixated .... then right in the pen.

It takes months - so don't take short cuts .... and don't leave the dog room to misinterpret .... meaning don't be nice, once he knows there is NO ROOM for him to prey on the chickens .... all should be well. But when you pet and sweet talk and such - then he thinks it may be worth the risk. :)

Good luck !

Congrats! Take your time training him and you shouldn't have too many problems. Our sheltie is pretty good with the birds but he was brought up with them. He tries to help round up ducks for us when they're out and for the most part leaves everyone alone. He's not a big fan of the guineas though, I think its's just the amount of noise they make.

On a side note, Danielle also got a puppy yesterday. She missed her Pekingese so much and we've always had a small dog around.

I went to the market and bought some Butternut Squashes. I grow them but did not get enough. I plan to buy cheap pumpkins after the end of the month and store them for winter feeding.
yes, I want to do that also. my husband rolls his eyes at me all the time when I say that stuff hehehehehehehe. I assume that I can store the pumpkins outside and let them freeze and bring one in to slice up to feed to them once a week? nooo????

We have a '02 Trailblazer with 150k on it. It's rusty and nickel and dimes me to death but it's a straight 6 and 4wd. Tows anything I've put behind it and hasn't left us stuck up north yet. Gas mileage isn't so great, 20mpg on the highway/15mpg with the snowmobile trailer, it could be worse I suppose.

As for candling pics, maybe turn off the flash with a bright flashlight under under the egg in a dark room.
