NY chicken lover!!!!

TAB - so sorry, I didn't realize your brother had already passed, but I completely agree with Glasshen and Cass that there is a special significance to the anniversary of his death and your Gram's passing date being the same. I think it is especially beautiful and comforting. I hope you and your family are doing OK during these especially tough early days without your Gram and as you remember your brother.

Jlaw - your birds are adorable and look terrific. I just cannot get my teeth around the fact that you, a relative newbie like myself, have already gotten yourself thigh high in 39 chickens! LOL! You are definitely a victim of Morehen's!!!!! I have been vaccinated, but when I see all the pictures and also read how Lynzi is looking to increase her flock, I can feel the virus trying to take hold. Noooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must....not....succumb! LOL!

Lynzi - How frustrating about the lack of eggs. I have a relatively small and young flock and am keeping our family in eggs despite only having 3 out of 7 layers. So that must be pretty annoying. Do you think it could be a combo of the molt and the mite issue? Who knows. My Columbian Rocks STILL have not started laying. I call them the "Slack Off Sisters." Good luck with the light. I like Jlaw's idea of Christmas lights. Not too blaring, like a bulb? I would be tempted, too, but I'm with Stony and Rancher in their philosophy to let the birds have a natural resting cycle. Ours are more of pets, though. I realize not everyone has the same view point.

Rancher - Some times I do wonder if my birds might be too portly. How can you know for sure? I don't give them much table scraps at all, but have feed out free-choice. They get a couple of handfuls of scratch daily. Maybe too much..... ?

Everyone........

I just tried making a recipe I've been saving for years and finally got around to. It's called PUMPKIN BISQUE (soup) and it's ridiculously delicious and easy to make!!!!

If anyone is interested in trying the recipe, let me know. I will be making it again soon. The only problem is, I could eat the whole pot by myself in no time at all and it does have dairy in it, which can upset my tum. I could make it with Lactaid next time, but wonder if it would be as good....

Everyone is snuggled under the coop to keep warm!

I kinda wish that my girls would slow down!..I can't even seem to give the eggs away. We got 6 out of 9 this morning. That makes almost 6 dozen in the fridge. The girls will get a dozen this afternoon, we're having scrambled eggs for lunch, and I'm going to hard boil another dozen for lunch tomorrow and some pickled eggs... Anyone need some eggs?!

Haha I know what you mean! I usually get about 15 eggs a day. Luckily I have quite a few buyers at work but my fridge is overloaded with eggs...I'm starting to eat eggs every meal it seems. That picture is adorable by the way! It was snowing this morning when I left for work...ick the girls didn't seem too pleased.

Thats one of the things I both love and worry about with my girls. They lay often and they lay large but they are not very big birds compared to say my sex links. My EEs have broader chests than the leghorn girls too but the leghorn girls lay probably 5-6 days a week an XL size egg.

I know for the size of the bird the egg is large, i want a few more leghorns but in different colors my male is a golden duckwing and my female is white.

Morning!!

Morning all!¡

OK ya'll with egg problems stop talking about it cause now my girls are slacking. Here I was happy I was getting about an egg a day from all of them till a few days ago. Only 7 layers and getting like 4 eggs a day. Of course now I start getting people wanting to buy eggs. I couldn't give them away when I had 9 eggs a day. Think I may have to hit up craigs list for some hens or something. I don't think these others will start laying till spring.

We do have a new layer my wifes black jap bant is laying small eggs so funny seeing the small bird in the nest box. I love watching this bird walk around the yard. It's so small but has a huge tail sticking like straight up in the air with these tiny little legs.  I'll have to get a pic of her.

LOL I know im hoping that once i have more girls laying i wont need to use a light next year. My girls stop laying in sept haha.

So i thought the hail would make the girls wanna not free range nope still out there working hard on next years garden for me.

LOL TOB you need to get some more let me hatch some ee's out muahahaha.

Well nothing on craigslist for hens. I may see if the guy at work who is under feeding his chickens wants to let some go. Figure if I can get them back in shape and get them cheap maybe worth it.

I cant remember who suggested a putty trough for feeding fermented feed. But thanks it works great I took the 14inch red ones from homedepot and screwed them right two wall with screw and fender washer I have 3 inside 1 out side and 2 in small coop. So far not a big mess except the stupid trukeys in small coop grrr I'm ready for thanks giving. The nice thing about it is I can also mount them at different heights to try and get the bigger chickens to eat at one and smaller birds at the others. Also lets me spread food around some instead of 39 birds around one 30lbs hanging feeder. Not to mention saves space since the putty troughs are about flush with the inside 2x4's of my coop chickens have more room in coop.

Well out to feed the turkeys. So far 5 out of 8 eggs don't know how often this little bantam is going to lay though so more like 5 out of 7 not a bad day today.

You are lucky. Out of 8 hens only 1 is laying. It takes me almost 2'weeks to get a dozen eggs but thankfully my egg customers are patient. They can only get 1 dozen at a time so everyone can get a dozen at least once a month. THat doesn't include what I use for cooking. I sure wish they would molt faster :)

I hate google searched for chickens, it always shows you images of birds that NOT what you're looking for. Mainly because another breed was mentioned somehow with that picture but still....

Are there any Easter Eggers that are mainly white in coloring as far as feathering goes?

I had a Del/EE cross, but she laid brown eggs. I had a Dominique/Del cross and she laid white.

Right now I have an EE and a BM hen in with the Dels and neither has laid in quite a while. Don't know why though.

My brother in law has two white EE roos he has to get rid of. They are in Rochester if you are interested. My EE's aren't bad layers. They're on par with the silver laced wyandottes I had, but do seem go go through a harder molt.

Strangely enough only a few of mine have gone through a molt. That's why I think they might be too fat. Some have lost a few but others you would not know what a molt is. I do feed a higher protein feed though. I suppose I should reduce the feed and let them empty the feeders before putting in more. Also skip the scratch feed one or two days a week.

I'd hate to send them to bed with empty stomachs though.

So I was looking at my facebook and came across this and wonder if anyone has ever tried it.

HARD BOILED EGGS DONE BY THE OVEN!!!! Check this out!! Instead of having the smell of boiled eggs in the house why not bake them?!! No smell, they peel pe...rfectly, and a lot easier!! Oh and for me in the Fall and Winter months it makes your house nice and warm with the oven on LOLOL. Try it out!! Bake them at 325 for 25-30 min, then once you remove from oven, put in a bowl of ice water to cool, and it will get them super easy to peel! If you want to keep this idea then share it and it will save on your timeline. Also awesome for Thanksgiving parties coming up if you plan to do any deviled egg dishes !:)

Sounds like something posted by the gas company. That would take a lot of energy to "bake" them. Hardly worth the trouble.
