NY chicken lover!!!!

Sounds like something posted by the gas company. That would take a lot of energy to "bake" them. Hardly worth the trouble.
Hehehe we use electric but could also bake in a toaster oven depending on how many you want to do and how big your toaster oven is. We need to get a bigger toaster oven ours is on small side but I like using it when I can over the big oven. But yeah gas company could have figured it out to try and use more gas.

Lynzi - How frustrating about the lack of eggs. I have a relatively small and young flock and am keeping our family in eggs despite only having 3 out of 7 layers. So that must be pretty annoying. Do you think it could be a combo of the molt and the mite issue? Who knows. My Columbian Rocks STILL have not started laying. I call them the "Slack Off Sisters." Good luck with the light. I like Jlaw's idea of Christmas lights. Not too blaring, like a bulb? I would be tempted, too, but I'm with Stony and Rancher in their philosophy to let the birds have a natural resting cycle. Ours are more of pets, though. I realize not everyone has the same view point.
I was all for that too, until they gave up laying consistently once Summer started. If they had layed all summer then I wouldn't be adding the light. I wouldn't care to because I'd probably have 4-5 cartons of eggs in my fridge. But they haven't been laying and I am out of eggs. I'll have to start buying from my neighbor but I'm sure her birds are going to stop soon if they haven't already. The molt and mite issue may have been what caused it but I checked the larger birds and didn't see any on them. So probably just the molting with them. Who knows. Just would have been nice to have consistent egg layers over the summer.

I feel like this summer was such a flop with them, especially with trying to hatch the few eggs I did get.
We've been getting between 12 and 20 eggs a day from 50 hens. Slackers!

My parents had 3-4 inches of snow this morning. I'll see how much is left later today after services in Boonville. The ground is still wet so I expect it will all melt for now.
Its been snowing here too all morning. Nothing has been sticking tho...

Everyone is snuggled under the coop to keep warm!

I kinda wish that my girls would slow down!..I can't even seem to give the eggs away. We got 6 out of 9 this morning. That makes almost 6 dozen in the fridge. The girls will get a dozen this afternoon, we're having scrambled eggs for lunch, and I'm going to hard boil another dozen for lunch tomorrow and some pickled eggs... Anyone need some eggs?!

Awwww....They look so cute curled up under there! Mine haven't even been going in their coop at night. They've literally been free ranging 24hrs straight. I'm waiting for my friend to bring over another hutch so I can make that their house for now. I gave up chasing them around at night to get them in. And when I did see them in their house and would walk outside to shut it, they would run out. So I gave up.

Lynzi-- The pic of your friend's EE looks a lot like the ones I had from crossing a Delaware and silver ameraucana. It would be easier to find some in spring when hatching picks up. I cleared out my extras for winter and maternity leave, but plan to hatch more in spring.

Donovan came today. Of course we think he's beautiful

Funny story is that His parents weren't so sure about them having kids, then his father says to them the other day, so are you having 5 ? DD is not up to that I'm sure since she has to have a C section and was taken to the hospital twice this time.

Thats one of the things I both love and worry about with my girls. They lay often and they lay large but they are not very big birds compared to say my sex links. My EEs have broader chests than the leghorn girls too but the leghorn girls lay probably 5-6 days a week an XL size egg.

My early Dels laid the occasional double yolker but I am not inclined to want them to. One a large egg is plenty for anyone and B. birds that lay huge eggs are more prone to prolapse.

Everyone........

I just tried making a recipe I've been saving for years and finally got around to. It's called PUMPKIN BISQUE (soup) and it's ridiculously delicious and easy to make!!!!

If anyone is interested in trying the recipe, let me know. I will be making it again soon. The only problem is, I could eat the whole pot by myself in no time at all and it does have dairy in it, which can upset my tum. I could make it with Lactaid next time, but wonder if it would be as good....

TOB

I'd like to try it, when should we come over ?

Be careful what you wish for. Eggs will last quite a while once they're refrigerated. You can also make up your breads and cookie doughs and freeze them til Christmas time.

I've been reading up on breeds and may just get rid of my orps for another endangered breed. I do like the Brown leghorns though they are high strung. I do expect to hatch and keep more Columbian Rocks on the place too.

I'm not overly fond of white birds but if I keep them closer to the house I expect they'll be okay.

Browns are not so easily spotted. Of course it will mean finding the true heritage lines too. I'd like to keep at least 12 of each with two roosters.

That would mean at least 60 birds, not including the extra frizzle or what ever. A double hoop easily holds 12 - 15. However it will also mean money for cattle panels and other materials. I definitely will need four for each coop so there is a run attached for bad weather days.

We shall see, how I feel. Of course if I move to AL then that's another story.

Would love to put up a picture ofmy hen with spurs, but am technologically challenged. My old camera worked with Picassa on my pc. The new camera refuses to go to Picassa, so I load the pictures to the IPad. Where they stay. I can put them on Facebook, but somehow can't get them to this site. It asks for URL numbers, and this does thumbnails...

But I will go take her picture in case I suddenly get smarter.
