NY chicken lover!!!!

Glad I made you all laugh! I was outside most of the day and will pay for it later tonight.... Samson by Bantam Cochin Roo was soooo cute this afternoon! He decided to take a nap while his girls were nearby - I caught him with his head down in the pine needles and when I moved he popped his head up like "I wasn't sleeping oh noooo - Roos NEVER do that!" It was a great moment for me.

MuggsMagee, we might have to talk about those Silkies you've got - I might be very in interested in adding them to my menagerie! Don't have any adult Silkies - shoot or any right now except for the five eggs Laurie sent me - the gal in Hudson Falls. I also got the Blue/Red Standard Cochin and Blue Jersey Giants from her too. I did really well on that ebay auction and she sent one extra of each. I have them out getting settled and warm for a couple hours and then later tonight before bed I'll tuck them into the Incubator.

Then Barred Rock Hens have all been dustbathing today - you can just here there groans of pleasure if you listen and their little growls if anyone tries to push them out of the dust! Too funny!

I think we all need to get stock in tin foil and the more I think about getting those Silkies ready for a show the more it sounds like a dang "Day at the Spa" I think I'm a little jealous!!!

Do they have peacombs!? If so I may be! Thanks so much..

uploading pics...I'll post them later. They are very large...the will bring a nice size to a lav lline. Their combs are more smooth, no defined 3 rows of "peas" I do have a split lavender roo with a near perfect pea comb, if interested.

We call that a "Day of Beauty" at the salon. All I need is a massage therapist to come over & they'd have the full service.

I know exactly what to shampoo the white birds with to make them ultra-white... because I'm a colorist. Who knew being a colorist would be a good skill to have with chickens?!?

Meagan --- what kind of mixed color is your Hat trick silkie? I have a few of Nikki's chicks growing out right now.

Hey tgr--what do you bath your silkies in? What kind of shampoo? How do I do nails and beaks? OMG--I dont even do this for myself!!! I think mumbles would love to be pampered like that. She is only 35 days old but what a diva! The babies will get the treatment as well when they get bigger. If I tried that with my hens, I would get the stink eye and a lot of offended bawking! They prefer a good dustbath in the sand that has been warmed in the sun.

Dog shampoo is good to use. I custom blend pigmented shampoos in the salon, so if a white silkie is looking a titch yellow, I add a little blue/violet pigment to the shampoo. It cancels out the yellow because they're the opposite on the color wheel, but doesn't change the color.

We're planning on coloring the white birds we put in sale cages at shows where it's allowed. A friend had someone buy a white silkie out of a cage at show & swap it with the one they were showing. It beat the bird my friend was showing.

Now he won't sell at show without coloring them! My 18 year old can't wait to make bright pink silkies.

Edited to add:
Silkies really don't seem to mind the grooming at all! Shampooing & grooming a LF Light Brahma rooster is a completely different ballgame. Stink eye is fine... being bitten --- not fine!!!!

Hi I am new to the forum and from Northern NY up on the Canadian border (Ogdensburg) I have Silkies and a couple large roosters and 1 hen (not sure what she is - I got her from my brother-in-law and she is quite homely. The silkies are beautiful though, but I have too many roosters (3 roosters and until today only 1 hen - we got 2 more today.)

We just started with the chickens last summer and hatched 3 out of 13 in an incubator over the winter. That was interesting and quite the learning experience. We have 6 more in the bator now. Maybe we will get lucky and get a few more hens.
