NY chicken lover!!!!

I've already started setting duck eggs aside. I'll try whatever I have by Saturday.
I was devastated yesterday. Broom Hilda has been taking care of the chicks. I went to check on them yesterday and 2 were dead. It killed me.

So sorry sweetie. I hope the one is okay.

Oh yeah!!!!!

Ok guys, Fertile or Not Fertile? These are a couple of my Silkie eggs I finally broke open yesterday and had for lunch...

The second two pictures are the same egg
They look fertile to me but I am a beginner.

I hope that helps.

He is doing his job ...You have a silkie roo right ?
The problem with hatching with out a hen ....is they do it perfectly ...we are still learning how .
I will try again in the spring with some of our eggs . I think my problem was I had it too humid .
Also every egg even though it is fertile ...may not be perfect . a percentage of eggs hens set on dont hatch either

Yes Gramma - this is from my lavender pair. So I'm going to start putting eggs aside starting with this one. Hopefully I get some to hatch. I think I'm gonna up my humidity to the temp I had it with my very first hatch since that's the only success I had. I had read somewhere that with LG incubators the humidity should be at 45-50 and then 60-70 the last few days. When I did that I hatched out the blue Silkie and blue Orp.

Can you rent incubators? The kids and I have talked about hatching out some chicks in the spring, but if I don't have a broody, we will have to incubate them. I don't want to do it that often maybe just this one time. I don't want to make the investment in buying one or building one if I'm only going to use it one or two times. Maybe I'll have to see is someone will do it for us, but that takes all the fun out of actually watching them hatch out here at home.

Dogs enjoyed some with their dinner too!
Oh a dogs life ! is that your couch or theirs ? the pillows is a nice touch ..LOL
Do you ever get near syracuse ? I am in Jordan .. you could borrow mine ..
I will probably use it sometime in the spring ..if I have to ..
.I am hoping for a broody this next year though .
My Sumatras are always playing house .

heres the little beasty ..Skiddy ! I almost have remind him daily ..I am the master ...he is a underling ... chicken
He is soo funny ...at night ..I cant talk if I am outside ...or he will crow ...
Like Im letting the cat in ...I say something to the cat ...Skiddy will start crowing ( this is between 12:30 - 3:30 am ...)
I end up yelling to him .."Go to Sleep ! " Eventually he does stop & go to sleep after 5-10 crows ..
Sometimes the rest of them (all 4 start up too )

Stony - what does the morning sound like at your house with all those Roos .?
Can you record it ?

Gramma I didn't plan it at first I got sick and tired of the incubator not being built so I just did it and got it done in a day tweeked it and ran it for two days. Then I decided to set eggs I collected over the course of three days picking the best of the best. And I wanted to get them set before my birthday which ended up being one day before and it worked out in the end for me to be home. And now I'm going stir crazy this is the longest part of the incubation. I hear the chirpping and some started their external pip. I'm pretty sure one won't hatch but I couldn't tell if it was alive it had movement up until recently but then it was so dark and hard to tell. But anywho I got eight with movement so we shall see what happens.

Love that video with the chickens being thrown out the school house at the end. I can watch them play all day long oh so awesome Jackyl is great!

The Pyrenees mix is 90lbs, he was a rescue and he's 5. He can't be trusted with the chickens because he would kill them in a heartbeat but if they start making any abnormal noises he's up there in a second wondering what's going on. He definitely keeps some of the predators away.

this is a few years ago when I only had maybe 60 chickens. You can hear how spread out the coops are even though you can't see anything. I recorded this maybe 5:30 one morning in the winter. If I rmeember correctly only a few were crowing at that hour
