NY chicken lover!!!!

Kids e-books are more interactive than a button most of them have a read to me function for if parent is cooking book can read to them. Some light up the words as they go and most have somthing for the kid to do like touch the cat and will meow or move. They let you read aslo with out the read to me function.

I figured alot of people didnt know about the free/cheap books through the nook app. You dont need a nook or phone or tablet you can have it straight to your computer. Alot of aurthers on there that cant get published in paper or dont want to because they want the books to be cheaper. Alot of people think you need the nook to get them when all you need is an account.

I dont have problems with kids destroying them now that they are older. But my problem is paper backs falling apart after so many reads. Hard covers hold better but cost more.

Have you tried amazon i know i use to buy paper books off there they would bundle series or pair up simular books for a discount.

With all due respect. Seems to me this is a lazy parents way out. Lord have mercy these days it seems to me parents do little parenting as it is. Now they can skate on reading a book to their kids too? Good garden o' peas! Nothing can replace the joy of a parent and child reading together. Parents have an obligation to help their kids learn to read, imho.

I'm sure I have used amazon but too DW and I like to sit and have coffee together in B&N. Time together well spent. Can't do that on Amazon. I'll not be taken in by the lure of computers and such. Though used wisely they can be beneficial.

Even you and I can not experience the full effect of a personal relationship with out the face to face. Perhaps we'll get the chance at next summer's picnic.

It is a parents job to teach the kids to read. But this yet another tool to use. My son plays on computer all summer but doing stuff on his own like reading and math that was past what he was supose to know. When he gets stuck or dont understand somthing he asks and we break it down for him. The apps and books make it fun for kids inter acting with them. He reads a grade hight than he's in atm. This summer he did the barns and nobles summer book program twice. They only let you do it two times sadly. The apps and programs make it like a game to learn and alot of kids like the challenge/ rewards from them. I know if i sat there tring to teach him all he learned on his own he wouldnt have learned as fast and he learned troble shooting skills when figuring out different programs.

Shoot we got an ipad because kids play with them in kindergarden. 6th grade they get an ipad instead of text books.

I agree with both JLaw and Rancher. I like actual books to read myself, but for work training have read a book on my iPod or hubby's work iPad. Little girl has an extensive collection of books and we read with her. But both the iPod/iPad have apps downloaded to play with. She doesn't have access to them all the time, but does know how to work them without assistance. We are selective in the apps, most have an educational value. Counting, shapes, colors, ABCs, matching games, puzzles. Disney Jr tv episodes are the only non educational app and gets rarely used. Between us reading to her, the apps and the fact she has been in HeadStart since she was 2 months old, She is 3 and keeping up with her 4 year old classmates without any problem.
Also got to say having the iPod has been a great distraction tool to keep her quiet at times. Ever try to keep a squirmy 2 year old quiet during a funeral service?

Good morning everyone. Sorry about the chicken deaths. I guess all animals will get aggressive when fearful, even those sweet feathery clucking ones.

On reading, it's all good! The kids do learn so much on their own, which is a goal in my opinion. And that doesn't mean that there is no time for some books together, at bedtime or on a cold cloudy day, or at a special time each day. It just means that perhaps kids are amusing themselves with reading activities instead of other stuff.

The public libraries have summer reading programs too. The kids read then share the book with the children's librarian and earn prizes. There is usually a drawing at the end of the summer for a major prize. And they lend ebooks too. I have not evolved enough to use them.

My husband just called to tell me that he had come up on a truck on rt 81 with a huge image of the rooster on the RexGoliath wines...the text was Roll with Rex. We do enjoy that wine which was in the basket I won at the chicken gathering at Tabs. We are grateful for that fine basket, and Rex.

Roll on, there is work to be done.

Morning all. Made it safely across the ice sheet (aka my yard) hauling water to the three coops. Cloudy skies and feels like snow but nothing yet. Kinda hoping we get some so it gives me a little more grip on the ice. Must be above freezing because the big tub in the big run only had a skim of ice on it and the other two had none. The chickens wont come out onto the ice today. Guess yesterdays experience was enough. Hoping it might warm up a little as I have to run food out to the feeders later and stir up the litter in the big coop. Already did the silkie coops. With all this humidity in the air it helps if I stir it up in the am to keep it dry.

Have a good day everyone.

Yeah my girls are little sissies they try to hide in coop if they see any snow falling. One of my barred rocks was sitting on the heated dog water bowl so she didn't have to stand in snow to drink.

Well after that few days warm spell it looked like all combs was fine but just let them out and one chickens tips are turning white again. Even with the coop opened up more. I'm going to have to figure something out I don't want them getting frost bite.

A little vasoline, only a thin coat like as much as you would put of Chapstick on your lips can help avoid frostbite. I have a picture in my head of you chasing chickens around the yard with a container of vasoline clutched in one hand , and it's amusing me in a strange way...

lol I think I have to buy some first. It's kinda harder to tell if it's start of frostbite or some Fermented feed left over on there. I'll have to take one in and clean and see what it looks like. I picked on up when I checked for eggs again and felt it dindt feel hard tips moved still. Be back out there in a few minutes and grab some more.

Edit brought one in that had some black most the black washed off with alittle water and fingers no scrubbing. One tip did stay black so vasoline is on the list to buy. She also had some black on wattles and it came off easly. I think the FF is freezing to them some when they get messy.

to go with my big cat track.....a big cat. Probably similar in size to the cat that left the trail in the woods

So, I'm not crazy? I've been saying that I'm pretty sure I've seen something about the size and shape of a big cat around the Bridgeport area of Oneida Lake for a while now. I saw the butt end of it run into someone's yard again the other night. My Fiance kept telling me that its just a large fox or a coyote but the movements of all three of these animals are different. I grew up spending hours at the zoo, I love watching animals move, what I see every now and again does not move like a fox or a coyote. Foxes are smaller, more compact and they're edge slinkers. They don't like to run DOWN the street if there is an oppertunity to go off into the woods. Coyotes bolt. They don't stop and give you the curious 2 second look that foxes often do, and they run in an entirely different fashion. Fisher Cats are not as big as what I see nor are they a rusty orange in color.

Who knows, maybe I am crazy. Maybe a solid orange fox is running around.

of course you have big cats. Rarely do you see them but they are around. I killed a 40lb bobcat last fall at 3 in the afternoon that was chicken hunting.

to live in this state and sayyou don't have big wild cats, either bobcats, Canadian lynx or fisher would just be silly. They are all around all of us.
