NY chicken lover!!!!

I have all my birds running loose together for the off season, but plan on separating them in a month to breed pens. I'll be able to do eggs once they've been separated a couple weeks. Hopefully my pullets will start laying by then. The one in the picture was from the last hatch of the year so hasn't started laying yet.

I had NN hens in with a frizzle OE roo this last hatching season.

Jlaw -- I could set you up with a set normal frizzle and NN one. I think your wife would warm up to them. :)

Welcome Huntin Fool! Nice to have you aboard

Pyxis--so sorry to hear of your troubles.

Books---I love all kinds, both paper and paperless. I have enough books to start my own library! My nook has quite a few as well. I read everything.

Dh got some great pics of a redtailed hawk feeding on the gutpile of the deer he got. It was a very big bird and spent almost half an hour eating. I will have to get him to post a pic.

Down to 4 eggs a day now. Hoping the girls move on and start laying again. Supposed to get some snow tomorrow. A good day to bake.

Night all/

On keeping multiple roo's together, I have 5 cochin boys and all the cochin girls in 1 coop and my 3 barnevelder boys and their girls in another coop. For the most part everyone gets along. There's some squabbling here and there but nothing I've been worried about. I think a lot of it has to do with their temperament. The cochins tend to do more bickering than the barnies, who are super layed back.

I use wash tubs for my birds' food and water. (you can see them in the back of the picture of my chickens and the turkey) I haven't had a problem with the water getting dumped over. I haven't had a problem with the food tub either except once when my little D'uccle got stuck under it. The chickens climb in and out and it has worked for me. I make them warm mash in the morning with a big glob of FF then in the afternoon I bring out the pellets for them to have the rest of the day. I also bring out another bucket of warm water. I make sure that the chickens have clean water but the like to drink from the duck's dirty water bin too.

I feel a little bad I haven't had much time to spend with my girls this week. My MIL (73) fell on the ice and broke her ankle. I have been helping her out at her house. Looks like Christmas dinner will be at our house this year.

Pxis - I'm so sorry. I hope she will be okay.

You feel awful, think about how I feel! I sent over the bride of frankenstein! =( She really seemed like a shy sweet little bird - and she's just a baby herself, not even a year old.  Went broody right after laying about two eggs - maybe it scrambled her brains. =(

I wanted to rehome her because after she had her babies, the other hens picked on her so much she would fly out and wander around in the woods.. not good for her survival chances.. :(

Don't feel bad! Maybe she was just stressed from her move - she didn't kill all the babies, just two, although I think she was chasing the others as they were all stressed out. I'll bet she'll settle down once she's settled in. Anyway, where she is now there's no way she could get to the babies again.

Oh no, I'm so sorry Pyxis! Anything you can do to try to save the other two from the wry neck?

Yeah, they're on vitamins. One definitely has it, her head is now twisting down. Either that or it's a weird injury that I hope will heal, although there's no blood or anything on her. Hopefully the vitamin treatment will get her fixed up.

Pyxis !  So sorry !   :(     I know you have some wonderful plans for next year .... what is wry neck ?

That hen must have felt out of sorts from the move, and since she must have been one the biggest - maybe it was her way of controlling her situation.    So very sorry.

Wry neck is caused by vitamin deficiency and/or stress. It's a conditon where a bird's head and neck begins to twist around and oftentimes they end up "stargazing" - their head twisted all the way around onto their back so they are looking up. They can also start to just run in circles. I had a duckling with it once that recovered fully, so I'm hoping I can cure the faverolles too. As a side note, your little rooster is adorable.

Do you have Chickens ?

Quote: Sorry your babies died ...How Heart - Breaking
She was just ( being a chicken ) trying to establish the pecking order . The babies were just too young
My 1st flock ..one chicken is at the bottom ...when we got a 2nd flock ...you would think as she is at the bottom she would be apt to go lighter on the newbie s ?
NO WAY ! She is the worst one at pecking the younger ones . What she learned from the flock is to peck others un - mercifully .

Ouch ! Did she have to have surgery on it ?
The only thing that is worse than a broken ankle is ...having them have to put plates & screws in it to fix it ..
Hurts alot more ! Glad you are helping her out .
Your chickens will be just fine as long as they are fed ...LOL

April 2007 after cast was taken off ..this side had a plate ...I hated it ...I could feel it poking me ...they took out the plate & the screws & the screws on the other side .
about a year later .. this is the foot that gets frost bit easily
