NY chicken lover!!!!

Had a close call yesterday - thank Goddess my husband was home. Neighbors down the street have two large black dogs that are usually not a problem as they have an electric fence. They breached it once about two years ago - either the batteries went dead or maybe it was a weather thing (it was VERY cold that day). They were out again yesterday and made it into the chicken area -thankfully it appears the electric netting stopped them although one chicken did fly out. They scared my barn cat into the rafters and at that point my husband saw it on our cameras and shooed the dogs out before any animals were harmed.. we went on a ladder last night and got poor domino (the cat) down. :)

Thankfully the dogs had not gone into kill mode yet and were easily deterred, but everyone is on lockdown today until I stroll by the neighbor yard and wait to see if their dogs will breach the fence again (they always chase whoever walks by).

Argh. Hate leaving them locked in a smallish coop, but no other choice until those dogs are secure. They've actually been pretty good at keeping them contained for the last few years..

Morning all. Cooler today and NO RAIN!!! Everybody ran out when the doors were open. I think they are happy as well. My hen downstairs limped around a bit this morning when I let her out of the cage. I ran my hands over her in depth and she really is all skin and bones. Not sure why. Her two poops she left on the floor were normal and her crop is full. I will continue letting her stay downstairs to see if she starts putting weight on. Two days is not enough time for her to recover. The leg feels normal, no breaks or swollen joints or dislocations. Maybe a strain or something since she is so very thin. I smelled her and no odors and a close inspection shows no bugs. Guess time will tell.

I admit that I too sometimes think of downsizing on these miserable days when I dont want to have to go out and take care of 4 coops. However, it forces me to get up and get moving no matter how Im feeling. I find my range of motion improves and my blues improves as well. I admit that some days takes a real effort due to health issues but my cheeps keep me motivated and chicken therapy is much better than human therapy!

Tab---I hope you do get some rest. I remember how it was raising 3, working and keeping up with life in general.

I am sorry to hear that some of you are having issues with your bantams. I have been lucky so far. My first group of silkies (Little Man and his 3 girls) will be 4 this spring. They are a hardy bunch, surviving weather extremes and the occasional dogs that come by. The girls still lay like crazy when they arent broody. My newest group of silkies (Legolas, et al) are also proving quite hardy and good layers and mommies.

About people....I work retail....enough said.

Well there went the rain and nice weather. We have like 3 inches again. After changing shavings yesterday I get into the big coop to see snow inside yet again what fun.

at least these neighbor's seem to work to keep their dogs contained - so I would accept that once in a while and seemingly weather related issues as ok .... the ice may have blocked or coating things and no signal was getting through - the dogs probably "smelled" that at once and made their break for it ! FREEDOM .......

I shop TSC alot and I have them load my stuff for me. They're very nice. You should have asked for help.

As for the guys? I have gotten some nasty looks from women when I hold the door or offer to help. You just don't know how a woman will respond to a man offering to help. Blame your sisters, not us.

Blame "sisters"? Blame just plain rudeness. Whether it was the cashier not helping or requesting assistance or the inconsiderate people behind her, male or female. You comment is offensive.
x 2. Wow, just wow. And again WOW WOW WOW . All I can say that is rated PG. Some people......

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even think that she might be getting picked on. She's always been a pushy hen and even yesterday when I had her out in the run with everyone she was fitting in just fine. She luckily came back this morning so I grabbed her and put her in a crate. I think she's been living under the deck on the front of the house so at least it's warm and relatively safe there. I think I'm going to move her into the other coop and hopefully that will change things up a bit.

Well it shouldn't be. I'm from the 50's and have seen plenty. Women who get snotty ("I can do it myself!") if you get up to offer them a seat, hold the door or just plain offer to help. Those are your sisters. Even in high school in the 60's , girls would laugh when I held the door for them. Not a very encouraging thing to do to a teenage boy. Those are your sisters. I have endured the rude and angry looks to many times. I avoid the rude looks, etc. at all costs and that includes helping or offering to help. Women have lost more than they've gained when they burned their you know whats imo.

Well alright, I do hold the occasional door but only because it's a habit, but offering a seat or to help is rare. Unless I know the person. Other men may not feel they should offer assistance. You're equal now and unfortunately in some areas you might not wish to be. Such is life, sad as it is.
