NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning All,
Still no pips from the lone Orp egg, candled and still no movement. Looks like it gave up during lockdown.

Just bummed cuz I really wanted to see if it would have been another blue chick or another color of some sort. And yes I'm too much of a wimp to open the egg to see what happened. I have it sitting on the counter in case I get the courage to do it but I doubt it. I am setting some eggs aside for Payner59 so maybe she'll have better luck than I did. I'm glad my next hatch will be with the Brinsea though. I have gotten no where with this LG.

Lap - sorry to hear about your favorite hen.

No sign of the missing fall chick this morning. And I believe that EE was a pullet, the remaining white EE chick a roo. Something grabbed Luna's body and dragged it into the trees and ate her head/neck overnight. Probably coon. Not sure what to do with the body, hubby wanted to bury her but even the manure pile is frozen. All her June chicks searched for and found her body and bawk bawked at it. Although she was done being broody, she still looked out for them.

ETA: found the chick, was under the riding lawn mower, still alive. But surely sore from being cramped up and dehydrated. Locking her in the coop by herself with food and water for awhile.

Huntin Fool - nice run ! I'd like a permanet run like that and then my nets to open it off of during summer. I'll have to start saving up lumber and fence scraps.

I'm not sure how many of you have ever seen a trail groomer so here's a video of Redfield's groomer in action. I shot the video Friday afternoon on our ride up north.

Glad you found her. Sorry about momma.

Tab, nice pic of your littlest!

Lapeerian, sorry to hear about Luna. Poor girl, but I'm happy you found her baby.

Ke, I had never seen a groomer like that. It sure is noisy. The ones at Toggenburg are scary things, they are usually arrayed at the bottom of the slope waiting for us to finish sweep before they take over the mountain and turn it into corderoy. And the little things that are dragged by a snowmobile to groom the cross country ski trails. Glad you have found a place to play in the snow, we have grass showing here.

Most of the noise is from the sleds idling on the side of the trail waiting for them to pass. They use a pretty quiet diesel engine on the groomer. I've seen the ones at Togg, it's one our favorite places to stop when we can ride down here. They have groomers in Old Forge like Togg does but the obviously pull a different drag.

Found raccoon tracks outside the barn this morning....guess we'll be setting up the trap tonight....sigh..Been here with chickens for 15 years, and now raccoons are coming around...Must be climate change!

Gotta blame it on something...

I've noticed more tracks than usual. The girls were all hiding yesterday during the day and I noticed the Black and white cat in the woods playing with a mouse or something I think. It won't bother the girls but they don't know that.

I saw a huge Red headed wood pecker yesterday too.

The day before I saw a huge bird gliding over the area, but much bigger than a hawk I think. I didn't get my Binoculars I'd wanted for Christmas. I have to buy some.

Anyone got any advice on what to buy that won't cost and arm and a leg?

I've been seeing a rabbit through the hardware cloth at the base of the hoop coop run. I don't bother them. Also saw a mouse yesterday and set a trap but didn't catch it. I hate meeces to pieces!

I've posted my lone RIR and SLW hen on CL for $5 each. Next up may be the lav, bbs and blk orps. The blks are roos but very nice and round. All are headed in to year three. I'm tired and they're not good winter layers.

I don't understand it but that entire coop has gone dry. Even the EE's. I don't think they're happy. They look beautiful. I may go back to Dumor 16% with them.
