The birds are safe that is what is most important !
You have enough ventilation ! Too much I think ..I would cover / close every opening on the walls .
and only leave 2 very small openings at the top near the roof . it only needs 1 or 2 small openings to vent

I am thinking that chickens in the basement should thaw your pipes

I was out with the chickens in the coop adding more blankets for insulation from the outside .
My coop doesnt have solid walls

It was 3 degrees in there & going down . I left the light on in there ..a 75 watt bulb ...I am hoping it will add some small heat for them .
Yeah along with the chickens i have a small space heater down there trying to thaw them some. The cross roosts is just because i dindt have a way to set 2 roosts up and still have room for nest boxes. I only have 2 walls that have any wood on them the other two walls was stone with no way to really secure the roosts to them. I did luck out and was able to put one roost into the wall alittle bit on top of a stone. I only had like an hour before work to set it up. I plan on doing it all over this summer and having 4 walls wood and no tarps lol.

No it was on the return trip to the coop all I had was an empty tote.

Well 2 8ft roosts crossed aint enough space for the girls I'm going to change it around tomorrow I think.

Ok so I stoped by walmart on way home. They have fleece $2.50 a yard or they have like a burlap style cloth but pretty holey that is 2.97 a yard. I'm trying to figure out how I could staple it to the openings in rafters with out it pulling staples through. I thought of using cardboard over top of the cloth so the staple would go through it then the cloth then wood. I also don't know which I want to use one that breathes better and seems like it maybe stronger or the cheaper less air flow fleece. Any input?

I think this summer I will put boards hinged so I can close the rafter holes as needed or leave some open.

Jlaw, instead of cardboard, you could use a thin piece of wood-like a 1/4 inch or less narrow slat...firring strip. The cardboard could get mushy, but the wood would stay firm. You could wrap the burlap around so the fastener would go through the fabric twice, first and last before entering the upper part of the frame. I would go with the burlap, as you would really only want to slow down the wind and snow. I think I would also go from the outside because if it is rain, the fabric would drip...and if it's on the inside your walls and bedding will be damp.

Have been thinking on these lines a bit due to our porch problem...perhaps I'll post pix later, now that I can.

Here are some pix of the porch problem. It has been a stress factor for both the girls and me. We began to make that porch into a three season room, but after laying the floor realized that the supports had shifted way out of plumb.. Enter the bulldozer, temporary supports, new footing and support beams, meanwhile the window installation was put on hold, the snow fell, shoveling was required, although Bella was not in favor of shoveling her snow room. The girls had to endure strange people, machines and noises outside their pen. Now the entire porch is wrapped in 6 mil plastic. No picture of that yet. It flaps noisily, we can't see through it, but no snow in the snow room, and the house is warmer with that corner buffered. The girls hope the window toward them will not be screened so that their airmail treats will not be curtailed, and so that Mr Ruger can keep the backyard safe.

Got my splash eggs a few moments ago! I'm letting them settle for a while before setting them. May not even set them until tomorrow. I'm super excited to test out my incubator. I also set 6 eggs in the LG just to see what happens with them. These will be my last hatching eggs from the BR and Buff Orp before they leave here on Friday. We did end up rescheduling from yesterday due to the temp outside. I have 2 BRs in there, 3 of Stella's and 1 Buff Orp.

I'm sure when it's all done it will have been worth it.
