NY chicken lover!!!!

Here are some pix of the porch problem. It has been a stress factor for both the girls and me. We began to make that porch into a three season room, but after laying the floor realized that the supports had shifted way out of plumb.. Enter the bulldozer, temporary supports, new footing and support beams, meanwhile the window installation was put on hold, the snow fell, shoveling was required, although Bella was not in favor of shoveling her snow room. The girls had to endure strange people, machines and noises outside their pen. Now the entire porch is wrapped in 6 mil plastic. No picture of that yet. It flaps noisily, we can't see through it, but no snow in the snow room, and the house is warmer with that corner buffered. The girls hope the window toward them will not be screened so that their airmail treats will not be curtailed, and so that Mr Ruger can keep the backyard safe.
Man that's ruff hope it works out. But I see your setting up a slip n slide aint it a bit cold for that? lol

Got my splash eggs a few moments ago! I'm letting them settle for a while before setting them. May not even set them until tomorrow. I'm super excited to test out my incubator. I also set 6 eggs in the LG just to see what happens with them. These will be my last hatching eggs from the BR and Buff Orp before they leave here on Friday. We did end up rescheduling from yesterday due to the temp outside. I have 2 BRs in there, 3 of Stella's and 1 Buff Orp.

Congrats hope you get a good hatch.

I hope all goes well.

Tab and Travis are coming Sat. to pick up my orps. Then it's to see who else can go. I don't know why I stress most can be replaced at a later time if I chose.

I know how you feel, I HATE the fact that I'm rehoming my Buff Orp mix (my son's first chicken) and the BR (who I absolutely love how she's tuning out after this molt she went thru in the fall) but I just keep telling myself it has to be done. The orps were a breed I never intentionally wanted to work with and this summer I ended up starting to only because my silkies weren't yet. Guess I got bored waiting for them and needed a new project. I am glad that I did it though because I got nice looking Blue Pullet out of the deal and now I will have a trio of purebred orps to keep on the side for eggs for consumption as well as hatching eggs if I ever decide to sell or hatch them myself.

Now that I have a trio of adult silkies I plan on getting only adults this Spring - no chicks. Any chicks will have to come from only the eggs I decide to hatch out or I allow a broody to.

JLaw, my biggest problem this summer was waiting for these lavenders to grow out and meanwhile I got bored and got focused more on the Orps! Lol I've been doing some looking around and have my eyes on a couple of adult birds. Just have to wait a little while for it to warm up so I can have them shipped to me ;-)

Yeah after these silkies I'm done buying from other people for a bit I think. Going to focus on these with son then maybe another breed until then it's EE/OE's as off spec of birds.

I've decided to concentrate on my Birchens and Dels. Too if I did get into anything blue it would be Wyandottes. I'm beginning to hate the frost bitten combs. Poor things.

I've been reading East of Eden and thinking of my kids and kin down south. I've not seen my brother in years. Not that we ever got on, but there were times.

I can't save to travel when I have so many chickens to tend to. I have a place to stay but it cost to fly. Truth be told I hate flying. Not the fear mind you, the hassles. I have to go before I'm to old and this cold weather is making me feel very old.

I've only seen my grandson twice.

I recently got the obit for my uncle who moved to Chicago years ago. He passed in '76 but I wonder if he ever missed his brothers and sisters.

Question...I just emptied out the coop I made this summer that I used for a brooder when Stella had hatched the silkie chicks. It had 3-4 mice living it. We emptied it out, got the mice out. I can only clean it out so much because most of the stuff stuck to the bottom is frozen. Is there anything I can put down in there before placing the shavings down that will keep the mice OUT but wont be harmful to the chicks? Or is there no need to worry that much about the cleanliness of it as long as I have a good amount of shavings in there? I'm just worried about mice carrying disease and whatever is in that brooder that they left behind could be germy. This is going to be set on my front porch with a heat lamp for my EE chicks, (though they don't need a heat lamp they will while they are outside due to the frigid temps) right outside my living room so I can keep an eye on it. I don't want to put them in there with the chances mice might come back seeing as how there will be chick feed in there for the chicks.

Meant to add: What's amazing about all this is there was half a bag of game bird chick starter that I had bought for the ducks when they were younger and it wasn't even touched. No holes in the bag, and no mouse droppings in the feed. So weird!
