NY chicken lover!!!!

I gave the girls a head of cabbage this weekend. I have it hung up. I put it up saturday afternoon. They still hadn't touched it that much by night. They got it figured out today! There is just a little less then half left. I think that they really enjoyed it.

It was nice on Friday and Saturday for the most part even with the rain. Everyone was enjoying all the grass in the yard. Even the boys (ducks) were out and about loving the pools of water in the yard. They took one look at the ditch and turned around. I was very happy that they didn't go in The water was running very fast. I worked some more on my duck hut. I got the back off and fixed it so now I can open it up to clean it instead of turining it on it's side, but then I had to screw it shut cause the locks that I have won't work the way I wanted them too. I have to think about it a little more on how I want to lock the back up, in the mean time I just put the bottom screws back in.

I'm not Tab (or travis for that matter) but I did write the date down and May 17th (Saturday) is what I have written down.  Tab can correct me if I wrote it down wrong or it was changed and I missed the change.   But that does give you a time frame if you are hatching.

After seeing the date more than once, I finally decided I better put it in my calendar. Thanks Cass

Rancher and Pyxis, You cut material of your choice about 2 inches
wide and start the looping. This rug is made of rags. As you loop you hand sew additional strips and keep looping and adding strips. With the looped rugs, it is all done with just this one step. (no need to sew)

With the braided: you cut strips of material about 2 inches and have 3 strangs of material going at one time (and you do a simple braid) you keep working until you finish the length
of braid and then hand sew on more material and continue.

After you have a length of braid.....you hand stick the braid together and just keep going.
This method is easier. The loop system is difficult to explain here. It is a matter of looping the material (after it is cut and stiched) to the other strip....in and out. NO SEWING.

Regards, Aria

I'm afraid I'm a visual learner so you will have to bring your stuff to the picnic and give us all lessons on how to do this.

I just peeked out the window at my EEs and lavender hen in the brooder and one of the EE chicks is sleeping on the lavender silkie's back. Lol so cute! I'd go out there and take a pick but I'm sure they'll all move and my Silkie hen will start squawking away.

Just as an FYI I'm thinking of down sizing in the near future. When I do I'll probably be getting rid of 3 partridge rocks, 3 black australorps, maybe 3 speckled sussex (all hens). I might also be willing to part with a few EE's and my Welsummer rooster.  All of them will be a year old this April.

Looks like the Aussies and SS have been claimed. Are the PR hatchery or from a breeder? I dont want show quality, but trying to avoid hatchery stock (other than the TSC production birds). I have a nice PR roo from June that I am keeping, would make a nice quad. Hubby pretty much gave me free rein to get whatever I want this year, as long as we get a decent amount of pullets.

Wish I still had our australorps. Those girls were gentle giants. Sadly when I made the switch to Barnevelders, they didn't make the cut.
I also have a few birds I need to move out. 3 blue silkie cockerals, a pair of black frizzles and 1 lavender cochin cockeral. I'm trying to clean out some of the birds that don't fit in with my plans this year.

I would love the lav Cochin. I have a lav project. Lost both of my lav Roos last winter and didn't hatch any Roos. All hens. Hatched lots of black Roos though.

Well of course I could have found this site on my own, but then Aria, would have no reason to come to the picnic. You missed my point.

My fear is after all my goading to get folks to come, I won't make it myself.

I will be there whether ya'll want me there or not lol. I plan on bringing my son and daughter and maybe wife if she don't have to work. Any idea if we are going to make a thread about it or keep it to the NY thread? I know they are busy with a baby so I don't want to bug them too much.

I was thinking a new thread so we can keep track of who has what birds/hatching eggs to trade or sell. Also what other items people might bring to trade or sell. I know I will bring chicks/eggs if people want ee's/spare buff silkie roos. Also I want to try and get an order ready for aarron's farm so I can get some birds or eggs for people if they want. I know its a pain to get birds/eggs so figure try to help out if I can. I know rancher wants some nice cuckoo silkie hatching eggs

. Also I can probably bring any type of juice people may want since I work in a juice factory.

Sorry I know its still early I just hate last minute planning. Now the actual doing of stuff I don't mind procrastinating till last minute lol.

Last 2 times we got together we did start another thread for exactly the reasons you state....that is up to Tab and Travis, however....I am going to "assume" some things to help you with your planning. I am assuming that things are going to be similiar or exactly the same as the last 2 times, with the last gathering actually being at Tab's and Travis's.....

There are hotels close to them.
The actual picnic covered one meal, however some people where there early and I assume ate food they brought with them before I got there.
Everyone brings a dish to share.
If you want meat, you can bring meat....more about food available when people start really planning on what to bring.
Many brought their own drink. Some brought drink to share. (I brought a case of water, others brought other individual servings of things to keep the litter to a minimum)
Several brought something to share for the meal and for dessert too. Some brought munchies to share
Children are weclome.
Attire was casual
Chairs were limited, bring your own
All extra tables brought were put to use
There was a chinese auction at both gatherings, with the proceeds going to the host family. (Both host families went WAY above and beyond and deserved every cent we earned with the auction)
For that reason, people are encouraged to bring things to donate to the auction, but no one is banned from participation if they bring nothing except cash to buy tickets to try and win one or more of the items. (We have had everything from Avon products to full grown Roosters donated to the auction and only ONE item ever went unclaimed....so there is interest in just about anything you can think of....with wine being a HUGE hit amoung the ladies and Beer being coveted by the men. Sorry guys, I won it. It wasn't as yummy as I thought it would be)

We have considered have a separate auction for the children. Once we see how many children are actually coming I am sure that will be discussed again. (My 2 cents? I think it is a wonderful idea and would get separate colored tickets for the kids....would price them cheaper so the sllightly older children can buy them with their own money. I saw one family spend $40 to have enough tickets for their family's demand....that's a little steep in my mind)

Edited to add: Things/birds you prearrange to buy from others can be picked up/delivered at the picnic. All animals/birds need to be properly caged. (I still can't figure out how they caught that one that got loose last time)

Items for the auction don't have to be brand new...gently used items are welcome. (you know that waterer you used for 2 days and hated might be just the ticket for someone else's brooder set up)
