My son rents his books! I have the pleasure on mailing them back, so much cheaper! This is his last semester at Geneseo, with hopes on grad school. He is the first of my five kids to go to college. I am very thankful he has set a great example for the other 4, all younger then him.

congrats on your son's accomplishment and example. I think if one wants to go there are many creative ways to do it. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

One thing I like about BYC is that you can get lots of ideas and choose the ones that will work for you.

I agree. I want walls. I suspect that the one pictured was a bit farther south than I am. Annie did have a gorgeous set up.

I figured it was South. I figure they can hang some tarps for wind and rain protection if needed. I figured if I were to move to AL that I wouldn't need solid wall most to the time so an open air coop would work nicely. Too some breeds aren't good for the warmer states.

Have a friend in Israel who tried Brahmas and they couldn't handle the heat of summer.

I worked and went to school and took one class at a time for much of my schooling. I took the hardest course for me by themselves. I don't have much left to pay off my loans.

Never say never. If you want it badly enough, you can do it.

RE: The picnic? I think they Host and Hostess govern whether it will be a wet or dry event. I don't recall whether it was one or the other when I last attended.

Morning Everyone,
Just returned from picking up some Poulin Grain from Breella. We got talking about feed a little bit and how some our birds' eggs are awfully porous so I'm wondering if this feed may be a little better for my hens and the quality of their eggs. Time will tell...

My Blue Orp was 20wks last Wednesday so I'm patiently waiting on a first egg from her. My Buff Orp had hatched 3/28-3/31 sometime in 2012 and was the first one to start laying that year in August - around the 28th - 30th so that was 5 months old that she was. (Only reason I know this is because I got the chicks for Easter that year and we went on vacation in Aug that year right before school started, we got our first egg the day after we got home LOL)

Last night was fun! And mostly because Ginny was being honored for her achievements and we were all happy for her and got boisterous. It was fun because it was a sort of oasis of good feelings!

We travelled a lot for hockey and lacrosse with my sons and I watched lots of parents attitudes toward alcohol and then formed my own. That is that I prefer to have a glass of wine at home, or even two on a wild evening. But I took parenting seriously, and also safety, and decided that when way from home it is best to have the wits I have in good working order. And I prefer to have a drink with those I know well, so home or maybe at the campsite when camping works for me. And I won the basket with the Rex Goliath wine, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and Rex is frequently found in my refrige now.

On spelling, I realize that a word I just don't seem to learn is the grain, alphalfa. That may or may not be correct. It was never on a spelling list. Perhaps Common Core should address that.

What is this picnic that I see chitter chatter about?

Ugh.....the horse paddock is a sheet of ice. Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about buying some sand or kitty litter to spread around.

Thirdly anyone have a lavendar orpington roo that they are looking to sell?

Warm maure works great!. At a farm that I used to work at they used it for the driveway! It was on the top of a mountain and I coudln't always make it to the top ( didn't have a 4x4). They took the tractor and spread some of the pile down the driveway and it worked great. Then by spring it all worked in and you'd never have know what they did.

Sand works well too, but why not use what you already have. It doesn't cost anything

Well Coconut is a wine I made around Christmas and you use these glass 6 gallon jars called carboys! Working on tomato and white cranberry today.

Picnic is a face to face gathering of people (and their loved ones, if they so desire) who chat on this thread. (ok, other threads too, if they want to come, but mostly it has been the wonderful folks here on the NY Chicken Lover's thread.)

There have been 2 of said picnics. Both times there were about 15 chicken folks (and almost as many loved ones) attended.

The first picnic was in the Albany area and drew mainly Albany area folks. And Ginny.

Some people drove 2+ hours to attend, others (such as myself) drove less than an hour. (I think I was closest at 11 miles. LOL) We all had a great time and ate til the wind blew us home. (It was the Saturday before Irene)

The second picnic was at Tab's Chicken Obsession (aptly named, I might add. What a wonderful set up she has) and AdminHotel (Travis) house. (She doesn't let him use the computer any more, or at least he doesnt' post on this thread anymore) A slightly different crowd showed....again some traveling a LOOOONG way, and other making there in a few minutes. A great time was had by almost all. I suspect that chicken we chased all over the yard didn't have that much fun.

The third picnic is going to be at Tab's again. I am thrilled she and Travis agreed to host again. They have a wonderful yard, a lot of parking and shade to sit under, should the day be warm. This is the first time we have had the picnic during hatching season. (although people have requested that we do so many times)

If you have been reading the thread you have picked up on other things about the picnic. EVERYONE is invited...newbies, oldsters, children and birds. (Strong cages recomended for the later)

It is a wonderful way to get faces to go with names. I think it makes this one of the more polite threads because we actually have met each other and know that who we can tease and who we need to be serious with.

Tab is very busy with 3 children but says she will put a thread devoted to the picnic and plans. Please come if you can. We'd love to meet you.

Sounds like a ton of fun!!! I'm also in the Albany area! Can't wait! Where is Tab's place? While I don't post in this thread very often I love reading what everyone posts! It would be great to put faces with names!
