NY chicken lover!!!!

Hah! I covet some of the Green Fire breeds -- $89.00 per chick isn't even the most expensive chick on that site! If you're not going to seriously breed and sell the stock, I can't see how Green Fire would be a reasonable option for anyone. They do occasionally offer chicks, pairs, and trios on Rare Breed Auctions, however.

Not that I want to get into a debate over this subject, but not only do I not understand how people could sell a CHICK at that price, I don't understand how someone could bring themselves to SPEND that on a single chick. That chick better be kept in a glass case away from all other to prevent it from illness and possible injury!

I just get a little annoyed with people like this because of what I used to deal with when I was breeding/showing rabbits. People used to charge anywhere between $100-$500 for a single rabbit! I'm sorry but if I'm going to spend that kind of money it's NOT going to be on a rabbit, it's going to be on an animal that could at least interact with me, like a dog! LOL I was jut browsing the groups I'm in on FB and came across a pair of silkies that were being auctioned starting at $250 (shipping was $60) the other was one silkie hen for $150 (Shipping was $55). Now for a nice looking pair, I can see maybe spending the $150 but even that is a bit much for a freakin chicken. I'm sure many will disagree and laugh at me but then again those are the same people that may laugh at me for spending that much on a pair of jeans. I guess it all depends on what is more important in that person's life. I just know that if I spent that much on a bird and something happened to that bird (especially with all these "mystery" deaths a lot of us have been having lately) I would be one unhappy lady!

I gave everyone some of that new Poulin feed yesterday, got an egg from Stella this morning, I decided to candle it before I placing with the one I got from her on Monday to see if the egg shell had all those dots in it like they have been as of late and it didn't!

I'm not saying it's the feed (yet), but I'm happy to have finally gotten an egg that I will be able to candle very easily because I can actually see thru it! I hope the rest are like that before I set another hatch from her.

Morning all. A dusting of snow here this morning along with a sprinkling of rain. Terrorists blame me for the white stuff. I opened one of the jars of chicken I canned a couple of months ago and boy was it good! Tasty and tender but not mushy. I restrained myself from eating the whole jar but I really wanted to! I will definately be canning more chicken in the future. Still only getting 2 to 3 eggs a day from 19 hens. Slackers.

I really need to get into this canning thing. Maybe thats what I'll do in my spare time today. Now what type of things will you do with that chicken as far eating it goes? (besides eating it out of the jar)

I think that a lot of the cost for some breeds is to compensate for the fact that they have imported the breeding stock into the US -- not an inexpensive process. I'm totally with you about it not being the right choice for me, however! Holy moly -- it's a lot of dough for a very fragile creature!

With all due respect, don't think you'll get the money or even half what you pay at GF around here.

Their Birchens are $49 a chick. I couldn't even get $5 a chick. Heck I gave away eggs, couldn't get people to pay for them.

Marq got two chicks for free. I doubt she would have paid for them. My hope is, in the future we can work together to improve what we have. I traded the orps to Tabs, so I'll have room to keep any and all chicks I hatch in the future.

I had Swedish Flower hens and was lucky enough to get $90 for them at laying time. I sold the lot. Lost money too, but such is life.

So what's my point? Plan to keep them to yourself. Don't expect to recoup any of what you pay for GF chicks.

Also be aware there are unscrupulous people out there who bought a few chicks and are now crossing them with like breeds passing them off as pure. Don't even think cuz they pass themselves off as breeders and you pay a high price you're getting quality stock. Genetics are funny things and can throw surprises your way.

I offered to have others go in on and order from GF but got not takers. They will do a mixed order you know. So if you want some of one breed and can find someone who wants some of another you might work it that way. I was told they'll ship as few as 6 chicks.

We have a "What are you canning?" thread. It's very helpful. You can do chicken stock for soups. (you will need a pressure cooker) Enough jams and jellies for two years at a time.

Need a gift on a pinch? A couple of jars of Gooseberry Ginger or Sweet Cherry Blue berry and you're good to go.

(a water bath canner is cheap and easy for jams, jellies and high acid foods)

Some folks do soups but I'm not up for that kind of work.

Not only will they cross breeds but you also don't know what they breed for. They could start out with GF chicks only and don't cross breed but few generations later they have the line so messed up from mating the worst looking chickens or not setting up breeding pens and just saying oh he's the main roo it has to be from him...

Think we have talked about this within last few months lol

Well thats the problem and the main reason I personally would NEVER spend that on a bird. I couldn't even recoup the costs of the lavender silkies that were roos that I got from Geri. I paid $25 a chick for those and ended up giving the two cockerels away.

I thought for sure if someone wanted a nice looking roo for their silkie flock they would have paid at least $10. I paid $25 for my roo from Adora and I thought that was reasonable. But you're right, around here I could never recoup those costs from the offspring if I were to spend that on a bird, I don't care what the breed!

Well see thats the problem, we're not big jam/jelly fans here. A friend of mine back in CT started pickling this summer and they were the best pickles I've ever eaten. I bought 2 jars from him and had my brother bring another 2 when he came up for Thanksgiving. This year I plan on buying at least 6 when I visit there. LOL I don't have a pressure cooker so I guess that rules out the chicken.
