NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all staying well (and sane...this winter is making me mental, I swear). I am still checking in on an abbreviated basis, as time allows. We adopted a new dog 2 weeks ago today...6 month old pit mix and boy, is she ever a lot of work!

Meet "Blaise" -- kept on a porch in a crate that she could only see out the gate from her whole life by her previous owner. She needs to learn EVERYTHING. I've got my work cut out for me. She's sweet, though, just needs to learn manners and boundaries. A small girl, but I call her our "rodeo in a box." Wild child!

Chickies are handling this godforsaken winter as well as can be expected, I guess. Still a bit of frostbite on the worst of the nights, but not bad. Just a few specks. Egg production is still pretty good in my 6 out of 7 laying birds. My, but you folks weren't kidding when you said how much chickens hate walking in snow. I need to shovel their pen and throw scratch down to entice them out...!

Take care all, and think spring!

Beatuiful little pup!!! Looks like a handful and very smart!

Do you guys think this storm is power outage potential? I'm planning on setting eggs in a bator this afternoon. I haven't herd much about the storm. Do you think I should hold off. Lol this is my first time I can't BELIVE how nervous I am lol
Buy 3 day heat packs. They sell them on the internet in reptile stores. I use them in case the eletricity goes out. They are a life saver. Cost about $2 per pack, but losing your chicks if the incubator goes out costs more.

Quote: Where are your Cayugas from? I just got a trio so might be looking for another line to add to the. They run out of the coop every day & pretty much stay out all day long, I have to make them go in at night. I put some hay in piles near their water, so it gives them something to sit on that helps keep them off the cold ground. They & the geese like it.

I hatched my cayugas from eggs i ordered from efowl. You can also order them as ducklings from efowl and metzer. I know with metzer you can order as few as two ducklings and their shipping is great.
The hay is a great idea! I think i am going to try that.

Your new puppy is such a cutie! My ducks are not big fans of the snow either. They only come out for minutes at a time multiple times a day to eat and drink. They then hurry on back into their house.

Thanks, Finny. I'm with your ducks and make frequent, but short, forays outside! I don't mind the snow. I just HATE the cold and wind. Would love to see pics of your duckies!

I think the constant snow and cold is making me lose my marbles. Time to start growing something! Plants, chicks, ect. Actually looking into joining in on Ladies Night at the riding stable in Homer. It will be tough to ride with so many layers to stay warm, but at least it is something!

That sounds fun (Ladies Night with the horsey set)! I really do feel like I'm starting to lose my grip, too. February is definitely my cabin fever month. It's funny, because March is usually not a whole lot better, but I just have a different mind set and feel like once we've ripped the February page off the calendar, winter has been conquered. It's a state of mind (maybe denial, but it works for me)!

Morning all. Looks like we are going to get more snow thursday. Cheeps will not be happy about this if we do............

Glad to see another life has been saved from misery. Your new dog is cute and she will be a good companion when you finish training her. Why do people get dogs if all they are going to do is lock them up or tie them out? Anyways, enjoy your new little girl.

I didn't know we were in for more snow, but why am I not surprised! LOL! (Well, not really laughing...!) I have a neighbor looking in on my birds this wknd; I feel bad that someone else has to deal with the snow, cold and ice while taking care of MY birds. Ugh.
Thanks for the encouragement regarding our new dog. She is going to be a lot of work, but I'm hoping it will all pay off. She really is sweet.

Ah she's gorgeous! Love her eyes! Gotta love pitties, they are so sweet :) Is she deaf? (It is super common for white ones).

<chants> spring, spring, spring!! I can't wait lol!

Thx, Cooped Up Chick. I think they are particularly sweet, too, if they haven't been ruined by some jerk. This one loves to plop down on top of you...luckily, she's a smallish dog. She's not deaf...just try to touch her food dish quietly, haha!

What did you find to be the most challenging with your rescue? Good for you to take that challenge on as well. This pup tends to get over-the-top hyper with my older dog. He is not too excited about a new friend...at least not yet. Also, her bladder control is not great. She makes it outside most of the time, and we take her frequently, but some time she will only have been inside a half hour and pees. That's a bit worrisome. Last night she whined to go outside around midnight. I took her out ASAP and she had the squirts. So she was very good to let us know she needed OUT....a big mess avoided. Today her tummy is fine.

Thanks JWEBB! She is definitely all that!

A dog rehomed here ... had some nervous pee issues .... do what you are doing .... take out often and praise when going outside. Just a little cluck of the teeth and a quiet word of shame when they do it inside ....

my dog shaped up and hasn't made a mess in the house in 3 years - but she was housetrained before ... she was just scared of the new place.

Hope it is not a physical problem.

Love her eyes.
