NY chicken lover!!!!

BAH! I had a call to the Cornell Animal Health poultry people I wanted to find out how much blackhead is in my area if its reported etc ... the Dr. Jagne is not here today to speak to me but the lady I did speak with asked if I had chickens on the property. She said they reccomended to not have ANY chickens on the property if we are going to raise turkeys even if they are not on the same ground.. but but... I want chickens too.. trying to educate myself ahead of time. Will have to think on this some I guess. It is mostly dairy and hog farms near me. One mennonite farm nearby raises the midget whites is all I have found closeby. Some of you have experience with both chickens and turkeys on the same property? how do you manage it?

Thanks, Finny.  I'm with your ducks and make frequent, but short, forays outside!  I don't mind the snow.  I just HATE the cold and wind.  Would love to see pics of your duckies!

That sounds fun (Ladies Night with the horsey set)!  I really do feel like I'm starting to lose my grip, too.  February is definitely my cabin fever month.  It's funny, because March is usually not a whole lot better, but I just have a different mind set and feel like once we've ripped the February page off the calendar, winter has been conquered.  It's a state of mind (maybe denial, but it works for me)!

I didn't know we were in for more snow, but why am I not surprised!  LOL!  (Well, not really laughing...!)  I have a neighbor looking in on my birds this wknd; I feel bad that someone else has to deal with the snow, cold and ice while taking care of MY birds.  Ugh.
Thanks for the encouragement regarding our new dog.  She is going to be a lot of work, but I'm hoping it will all pay off.  She really is sweet.

Thx, Cooped Up Chick.  I think they are particularly sweet, too, if they haven't been ruined by some jerk.  This one loves to plop down on top of you...luckily, she's a smallish dog.  She's not deaf...just try to touch her food dish quietly, haha!

What did you find to be the most challenging with your rescue?  Good for you to take that challenge on as well.  This pup tends to get over-the-top hyper with my older dog.  He is not too excited about a new friend...at least not yet.  Also, her bladder control is not great.  She makes it outside most of the time, and we take her frequently, but some time she will only have been inside a half hour and pees.  That's a bit worrisome.  Last night she whined to go outside around midnight.  I took her out ASAP and she had the squirts.  So she was very good to let us know she needed OUT....a big mess avoided.  Today her tummy is fine.

Thanks JWEBB!  She is definitely all that!   ;)

A dog rehomed here ... had some nervous pee issues .... do what you are doing .... take out often and praise when going outside. Just a little cluck of the teeth and a quiet word of shame when they do it inside ....

my dog shaped up and hasn't made a mess in the house in 3 years - but she was housetrained before ... she was just scared of the new place.

Hope it is not a physical problem.

Love her eyes.

HOW LONG would we stay outside if we were BAREFOOT ! LOL

NEW DOG
Hope it is not a physical problem.
That is what I was thinking ....If it continues she may have a Bladder infection ..
I have heard that some little dogs will pee when excited ...dont know if the same applies to larger doggies ..

Driving home Sunday ..I saw someone walking a dog ..
Thought it was a shepard at first ..
Stopped to ask them if it was one ? ..it was a blue heeler ...
told them if they ever want to get rid of it ..I was interested ...however..didnt leave my name or get their address ...
I know they live in the small trailer park though .

I have found A BLUE HEELER in the syracuse area that is up for adoption ..a rescue ...

She is the best dog I have ever had. She trained so easy and still loves to learn. She is a rescue & mixed with something but we can't tell what. I take her camping & she is off leash & stays on the site with command. Very good girl.

She has a leaky bladder. She was born with it. My vet has put her on Proin tablets. She gets 1 tablet a day. It is very rare she leaks unless she misses a pill for a few days or her bladder is over full. The only reason I could tell she had a problem was that she licked her privates a lot & you could see urine drops. And when she gets up there is a wet spot. But the Proin has alleviated it. And the meds are relatively inexpensive which is nice :)

I hatched my cayugas from eggs i ordered from efowl. You can also order them as ducklings from efowl and metzer. I know with metzer you can order as few as two ducklings and their shipping is great.
The hay is a great idea! I think i am going to try that.

We are working on an order for ducks from Metzers now. My eye is on Blue Swedish. Might as well considering how wet it gets here. The chickens don't mind, figure the ducks will love it.

Are there Cayugas in Ny in the wild? Just drove by a river that had some black ducks in, then again they could have just been black ducks, not necessarily Cayugas...

Weather is crazy in these parts, snowing, sunny, blizzard, snowing...geez! Halfway to Buffalo....

TOB - congrats on your new adoption! Love the eyes! Good luck with everything!
