NY chicken lover!!!!

REALLY??? Already? Have they not had a lot of people in to buy chicks and ducklings? Rancher if I EVER decide to part with the pair I have (I've been contemplating it but can't bring myself to do it because my drake is just so nice looking) I will offer them up to you first.

I shop there all the time and they treat me nice, so perhaps that's the reason. I would have taken her up on it but like I said I have the five Swedish. Plus I have to get situated with these first.

In other news I noticed on their bulletin board ( near the bathrooms) there was a posting from the SPCA for Rabbits. Spayed and neutered. $50.

Only someone whose brain has been damaged by Silkies would pay that.

I would never pay to get a rabbit fixed. I didn't even pay that for my rabbits! It's not that hard to keep a male and female rabbit separated! If you don't have the cage space then you don't get a male and female....duh!

tyvm ?

I was in TSC today. They have Khaki campbells and offered me buy on get one free. I passed of course since I have the Blue Swedish.

wow that was very nice of them. nothing personal to TSC I have good friends that work at our local TSC and the store in general has been go to us. But I won't buy poultry from them myself.
I probably should have said that differently. Apologies.

Well now, I wouldn't buy chickens cuz I don't need any more. However I saw there paperwork last year and they get them from Mt. Healthy and they have a good rep. as far as I know.

As far as TSC is concerned they may be sucking up to me cuz I do buy a lot from them, but I don't mind. I like them and think they're sincere. So I'll still shop there. They do have a good variety of feeds and supplies too.

Only thing is they sent me a coupon for 15% off dog or cat food. I have neither.

  • Peggy O- Welcome To the Chicken Enabler thread ..LOL

  • CASS - you did the right thing by donating eggs for the kids to hatch .You were thinking of the kids . It is only right that they donate some money to you ...to compensate you for your eggs .It sure aint free to feed chickens to make them ..

Hi guys, we live 45 min east of Buffalo, and 45 minutes west of Rochester.  Our "town" is so tiny I never mention it by name on line (we have a young daughter)  I haven't read the whole thread but I am seeing alot of local people in the posts I have read.  Very cool!

Just thought I would say HI :frow

Welcome :)

Caution:  Rant ahead

~~Really? Last year I gave the 2 elementary school 96 eggs to hatch. For free.  Just wanted any chicks they couldn't give away back. From those 96 eggs I got 18 chicks. 2 were given away to students, so they hatched 20.

I set eggs from those same chickens at the same time. 100% of mine developed and only one didn't hatch.

They contact me this year wanting 48 eggs in less than 3 weeks. (do they understand that *I* don't control how many get laid a day, the chickens do and baby, it's coooold outside. I am lucky to get 3 a day. No way I can fill an order for 48 in less than 3 weeks) I expressed how disappointed I was in last year's hatch rates and I would sell them the eggs in APRIL (when the chickens are laying, for heaven's sake and the same timeframe as last year...a time chosen for a reason), for eating egg rates. ($2.50 a dozen) THEY DECLINED. LOL

. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be the good guy. AND then person who contacted me CC'd his reply to EVERYONE in the friggin' school district to boot. Not cool, buddy. Even if you did reserve the right to "use my services in the future" in your email it'll be a COLD DAY IN HELL before I will help you out for less than current market rates. (That'll be $10 a dozen plus "shipping". I delivered them last year to the front desk of the school) (Year's ago when I hatched eggs [with 90% hatch rate, btw] the eggs cost me $28 bucks plus shipping for a total of $39 dollars...and I couldn't keep the chicks)

His reply stated that they had AUTO-TURNERS.  OMG and I still got only 25% hatch rate?  Did they let the kids set these eggs?  How the heck do you get such different hatch rates from the exact same chicken's eggs.  (collected at the exact same time....the 6  I set were the 6 oldest eggs....so I felt too old for eating, so I gave them to a broody.)  I am so upset.  It just doesn't pay to be nice anymore.  And I won't be.

End of Rant

Some people uggg, earlier In the year my kids school tried to get me to give the staff cupcakes (I bake professional) once a month, not pay me or supplies (eye roll) I nicely told them "where to shove it" lol

Welcome new members! Today was a good day for me. I packed my incubator full of leghorn and EE eggs to hatch for a friend, and tossed in some eggs I suspect are from my MF cochins. I also tossed in a brown one I found this morning because why not. There's a chance that the brown ones may end up actually being guinea eggs, so hopefully I don't get a surprise in three weeks when I go to lock down. I also ordered six sebastopol eggs for Lacie (and for me). I'm going to incubate them myself, and if she's still sitting when they go into lockdown I'll slip them to her. I've heard that many first year geese don't sit all the through so I'm taking no chances. I want pretty sebbie babies. And I should be getting an order from Ideal next week, provided I don't get a call on Monday that they're not going to fill my order, since earlier when I had talked to them, despite the fact I placed the order months ago, they told me that suddenly they were sold out on everything, that the goose I ordered was waitlisted now, and they "might not be able to fill it." I'm thinking my chicks might be sent out to feed stores. If that happens I think I just might take my business elsewhere in the future. We'll see.

I put the heater on a ceramic tile in the coop for stability. Sand could also be placed in with the light, but it can't tip over because of the cord. It does not get hot to the touch. The light is sideways because it does not fit vertically. Before putting them in the coop, I buried them in hay and left them on for 24 hours. The hay way barely warm, so I am not worried about a fire hazard

So far, it keeps the water from freezing and I can remove the water at night and turn off both of them.

Great idea! Thanks for sharing. At this rate you may need them until May.

Good luck with the hatching!
