NY chicken lover!!!!

DW said this am that the reason we haven't gotten the lake affect snow is the lakes are frozen so there is no moisture for the winds to pick up. I suppose I don't mind no snow, but Lord have mercy I'm freezing my butt off.

I found an egg on the floor of the Del coop and I've no idea how long it'd been there except that the outer part of the shell was coming off. I tossed it of course. It was solid and looks old. Don't know how I missed it.

Lynzii - I don't know anything about Brinseas, except that I can't afford one.
I had an egg like that this morning under a roost. I've got a girl that has been laying a softer egg lately. It may have been her. Most of the shell was pecked off, but then again it was rock solid.

It has been so cold! Just watching the weather on the noon news and it shows that it is supposed to be almost 4 on Friday and stay in in the 30's at least till Monday! Here's hoping that we have turned the corner and it is supposed to start to get warm finally!

My "new" Farmmaster redwood incubator.I have to buy a new heating element, but that is only $14. Of course, it needs to be cleaned up & badly in need of some oiling on the outside...says it holds 600 eggs, but I doubt it. Unless its Banty eggs.

No way could I sleep at night with such a thing going. Not enough sales of chicks in these parts. Good garden o' peas!

Got an egg from the Orp coop today! 1st one of the year! Now if only I knew who it was from.

Congrats. I'm sure you'll figure it out soon enough.

I see these guys and in my mind try to figure out how I can build a hutch with a slanted board under it so the poop rolls right into my compost piles. I'm sure they like a lot of attention don't they.

I know every time I see them I think how can I convince DH that I need to get some more rabbits. I used to have some, but not in a while. I know that the kids would love to have some.. I just have to convince DH that it is a good idea. I'm sure that he'll tell me I need them like I need a hole in the head!

Shouldn't be too difficult. I might actually end up selling a couple of my hutches but then I think of how that would probably be stupid of me because two of my largest hutches could be used as silkie breeding pens this Spring/Summer. I actually built a hutch out of one of those shipping crates (which by the way I saw Tully Hardware had more out front yesterday) I just remove the bottom and staple hardware mesh used for chicken coops to it. then I make a door out of the removed wood and attach that to the side that's already open on the crate. You can do whatever you want underneath it. They do love attention but they don't get much of it being outside other than me coming to the cage everyday to feed them. In this cold it's too hard to do anything with them. I do let them out to hop around once in a while but I'd rather do that in the Spring when I can let them run around the chicken yard now that I have the poultry netting.

They really are just another mouth to feed unless of course you have a garden and are going to use their droppings for fertilizer. I don't have a garden here so they are pretty much free loaders. I like to have a litter or two a year so I can at least make some money back to put towards feed. I'm hoping to get to a show this year with the mini satins just to see how they'd do.

Take 2x2's build a frame and then take a piece of tin from a roof and screw it to it then screw the 2x2 to the legs under hutch at an angle. Tin would work better than wood and it wouldn't absorb any of the liquid you could spray it off easier. I built my little hutch out of 2x2's nothing fancy was just to get it off the ground. The problem you may have is the angle of slant needed for it to roll off on it's own. The reason it may be a problem is because it affects how high you would need the hutch and actually have it roll into the compost pile. Now if you want it to just be easy to push into it then you wouldn't need much of an angle. Another idea is you could have the sloped tin then a piece of gutter at the bottom at an angle to a down spout with a 5 gallon bucket under it. Every few days drop a gallon of water or so to wash it all down and let it start to break down in the bucket before putting into compost pile.

Well if you have a garden then you DO need them. Their poop is good stuff. I don't know where the saying came from but if you ask me some people NEED a hole in the head to let the wind blow the cob webs away.
