NY chicken lover!!!!

Desiree and Lynzi, I have some Silkies hatching on the 20th by calendar. I had 15 eggs from show birds in assorted all kinda colors so I'm not sure what I'll get if you are looking for a special color. These are local and nice stock the guy shows and does lots with his birds.
Some could be frizzle as well I'm told. They'll be cute at any rate! I saw the silkie chicks over at Naturberry they looked pretty nice to me but I'm no expert.
I don't need any more silkies at the moment as I am now over run with them, have 4 still in the brooder, these 5 hatching out and I'm getting a trio from Pharm at the picnic. LOL I'm gonna be over loaded. But Desiree was looking for a nice white hen.

Desiree be careful when purchasing white silkies from TSC or any other hatchery. I'm not sure what quality you are looking for and if it even matters to you but a hatchery Silkie will not be as nice looking as one you could find from someone who raises them on their own. Google white silkies and you will see the difference.
I just want a hen or two to go broody. Eventually I would like some good quality silkies. I think I'm focusing on my boys four breeds for them first. NN, WCB Polish, BLRW, Pheonix ... This is my first year really getting into it. It's been trial and error for sure. I picked up 5 silkies and a barred rock for my 14 year old to surprise her lol. She has always wanted a barred chicken and we have never had one lol

Let me know what you end up with. I just bought 5 at TSC. But I know they are not the quality I would prefer. They were also st run so there is a chance i get all roos lol. I want the silkies as Broody hens but my son wants to breed them with his NN's. so eventually I think ill need good quality. I do want a frizzle to lol :) . @JWEBB

I cannot believe how fast these chicks hatch once they get zipping! Holy moly! My daughter and I were able to witness the last three hatch, well last two. The last one is at it now, taking forever. But the last two hatched in literally under 20 minutes. All different shades of blue, love it!!!! And the last one that just got done hatching is the lightest of all of them, so maybe a splash??? I know this guy I got them from had a white rooster over a white hen, a black hen and splash hen. I didn't think I would end up with many blues. Weird. But I'm happy with it because they are all that light blue I've been looking for.

Just tiny bit bummed because The first two that hatched over night, one only has 4 toes, the other has 5 but has pink tips on two of it's toes. :(  So those are out of my breeding program. I'll have to rehome them as pet quality, hope I don't have a hard time finding them new homes. The one that just hatched has 5 toes no pink and the third that hatched has 5 as well. So that's good at least. I can keep those two. I don't think these chicks are going to bearded. They don't seem to have any poof going on under their beaks. I'll have to see how the last 3 dry out.

All in all, I cannot believe that all 5 hatched successfully! I am soooooooo happy! Guess dry hatch is the way to go!

Oh no, 4 toes and no beard isn't good. Congrats on the hatch though. I had pips this morning before I left.

oh i kno it I love the frizzles hope I get some. that would be my luck to get all roos. My chicks I have coming are stratight run too we'll see what I end up with lol.

We survived yet another storm this year. Only about 5 in of snow but about 2 in of frozen rain. Not really ice because it wasn't a sheet of ice but shovel-able like snow. Weird. Hope everyone survived as well.

About a week ago I bought 6 chicks from TS. (Also straight run and probably all roo's lol) Sign said Ameracauna but I'd say typical EE's. Anyway, I wanted a fresh supply for my own. I brought 6 home and when I took them out of the box, 1 had a very bloody nose. I cleaned him all up and put all six in a 2x4 ft pen with a light. For a full day I would find 3 or more with bloody beaks and bloody eyes. I separated the bully overnight but put him back in the following morning. He dove right into the others blooding them up again. We culled it. Has anyone ever had this happen? I didn't notice him being aggressive at the store. (I'm not sure it was even a him) They had plenty of room. Someone suggested that it was because they were all different colors. I thought that was crazy. The problem solved itself with him being gone. Any ideas? Thanks.

Well, I had a plan to hatch in the LG but I can't get the humidity up enough for the turkeys. 60% is it. I have sponges and little jars of water and also water in the goody below the wire. BLAH!! I don't wanna put the eggs in there till its where it should be.

Not sure what else I can do but just add more sponges or water containers?
I hatched nearly 30 poults last year, all dry hatch. I never worried about the humidity, whenever I did check it, it ran about 24 - 30% . I could always tell when they were about to hatch as the humidity would raise on its own. In my experience turkeys were the easiest bird to hatch. Not everyone agrees with me but that's how it was. I used a LG too. Just my experience. I had Royal Palm, Bronze and Blue Slate. I sold them all due to the lack of room. I really miss them.

Not that I hatch turkeys, but that's why this hatch was finally successful! Dry hatch all the way till lockdown.

Try running a humidifier in the room might help some. And are you sure your hygrometer is correct? Here is a good video to calibrate them it's for cigars but it will work for any of them. I use Tupperware instead of the ziplock bag
