I keep suggesting Patricia Forman book "City Chicks". Lots of helpful information. You can try to change your town ordinance. A lot of back yard chicken people are trying to change they're towns/cities zoning laws on chickens. If you try to do it start with trying to get roosters in and then give them up as a clause in the ordinance. It will make you look like you are willing to work. Point out that fresh eggs are healthier than store eggs, chickens eat bugs and small pests if they can catch them. I think there is a spot on here about helping people change zoning laws.
Changing ordinances ....
I am on my local planning commission - NY will be set up a little differently - but the process is the same - petition is good. BUT - just show up to a meeting with 3-4 or more people and TALK to your city council/select board whatever it is in your town. A cute little flyer with facts ....
WOW - they really have no spine - and all I have encountered give in to face to face pressure .... now - I do mean be nice - but the pressure of seeing faces there - telling them how great this is .... bug mosquito control, japanese beetles begone .... and yes, put the roos in there and then agree to take them out - also numbers - start with 10 and agree to 5 .....
You may not get any action at first - it can be a long process and all meetings have to be public and given a long lead in public warning date - ours is 45 days .... but just show up to every meeting - may be 3 of them - if you can't spare 3 hours for this - then shame on you.
Sometimes changes can be done just on that one ordinance - sometimes the whole zoning section must be updated - be nice, be THERE and you should take the day. It was people that created the changes - the ones that show up get heard.
I got eggs, lots and lots of eggs.
Please keep me in mind if you have an extra sizzle, frizzle, frazzle izzle, etc. I've tried to understand how all that is done. I traveled to Grand Rapids for a dog so I could hop to Syracuse for a roo. Thanks.
I agree Pharm, every animal you keep no matter what kind requires husbandry. How well you do the husbandry is the quality of animal you will have! Many people do not understand this at all. I used to do this with dogs and sometimes cats when we ran the rescue. From 100 to zero degrees, they HAD TO GO OUT, they had to exercise every single day. Then they had to be warm and fed and cleaned up, fed and watered whatever the weather. I'm hoping it will be a just little easier with poultry I'm just not young as I used to be.Looks like everyone is having good hatches. Love all the baby pics. You are probably right, Rancher. Right now everyone is looking to start keeping chickens. Its when you are out there in subzero weather trudging through a foot of snow with food and water two or three times a day that reality hits. Or when you are cleaning the coop, or trying to get rid of cooties. Most people dont want to deal with that reality. Unfortunately for the animals, they dont get a say in the matter. However, we shall hope for the best. I understand about the whole trying to improve the flock thing.
Every time I think the hatch is done another egg pips. Got another chick working its way out. Hoping they finish by tomorrow so I can clean up the bator and get it ready for round two!
Dh made some fabulous chicken chili for dinner and my scratch corn bread is almost done. Smells good! I would share but there is only enough for two.
Thanks for the sentiment Aria and good luck with your hatch. Its so much fun!
Jenny, The Silkies are BEAUTIFUL. We are new to chickens and we have and plan to only have Silkies. We love them.
Thanks to you and Grandma, I have been in touch with Jeff and making arrangements to pick-up some of his eggs. You hatched 7 out of 12. I really am not qualified to know...but i would say that is FINE. Now interesting to discover....how many hens?
We have NEVER hatched and are looking forward to a good hatch. I do know that Blues sometime turn out to be so dark ...they look black. Enjoy them, They are therapy for us.
We have camera and we watch them. Very relaxing. Regards, Aria
