NY chicken lover!!!!

I've had two seemingly healthy turkeys die in just over a week after showing nonspecific symptoms for less than a day.  One was my Pencilled Palm tom, and the other was the gray PP hen.  Now my smaller Bronze tom is showing signs of illness as well.  It *looks* like coccidiosis - the affected birds are hunching over, fluffing up, drawing their heads in, walking very slowly, and have signs of diarrhea around their vents.  There is no blood in the droppings, but the strains that affect turkeys don't generally cause bloody diarrhea.  I can see coccidiosis because of stress from this never-freaking-ending winter weakening the poor things.  They're now getting Corid, vitamin supplements, and apple cider vinegar in their water.  I'm absolutely sick over it.  Well, my husband just walked through the door and told me that around 150 dead birds were found dumped near the Nassau water treatment facility.  That's less than a mile from me.  It's both creepy and extremely concerning, especially because the feathers shown (why they aren't specifying the bird species involved, I don't know) look like game bird feathers.

Edited to add a Huffington Post link with more details.  Game birds.  Good grief.  Whether the poor things died of a contagious disease or were all killed, it's disturbing and sickening.

I just saw on my news as I was reading that they've caught the people who dumped them. They don't know how they all died yet though. And it turns out it was over 200. Hope your turkeys are okay :(

The Town Supervisor posted on his public FB page that they've caught the idiots responsible (it was nearly 200 birds). Good - throw the book at them, if only for dumping. It's horrible to hope that the poor things were just killed outright and didn't die of a disease, but that would be better for the rest of our flocks than would be the disease scenario.

Quote: I kept Tt in the nest until it was close to hatch ..then brought her inside. as I saw other hens chase her out of the nesting box ..
So I was nervous whether she was a good mother or could defend chicks .
I have seen it both ways since ...she is out with them now
she defends against some & not others
They have their own section in the run so baby has some protection .only the Sumatra roos will go in their with them ..
And she can handle them .one is her equal / her mate , and 1 is her underling ..she rules him

Ugh. That's awful. Here's hoping your turkeys will pull through and whatever happened to the dumped birds is benign.

So I bred both my Holland Lop does a month ago, they were due to have babies this past weekend. Well nothing came of that. Sunday came, nothing. Monday came, nothing. Tonight I went out to close everyone up and saw fur under the cage of one of my rabbits. Checked her nestbox (I've been leaving it in there just in case) and sure enough there were 4 babies in there. I grabbed the nestbox and the mother ad brought them inside to warm up the babies. I hope they are OK and are going to make it. She must have JUST had them because I was out there this afternoon and there was nothing in that nestbox. This is her first litter so I hope she takes care of them.

Barely any eggs today. Only 1 from the Orp coop. This KC duck takes 2-day breaks in between laying. What a slacker. Still no eggs from the runners. Unless they're laying out in the field somewhere. Today they were up wandering around in the woods. And when they're not there they're over to the left of the yard in the all the brush with the sticky burdocks or whatever they're called. LOL The other day the Black Runner Drake had one stuck to the back of his head. He looked like a Crested Runner LOL

Evening all. Came home to Thelma and Louise greeting me in the driveway. They were mostly interested in what was in the bags I had. Those two are always looking for a handout. Got lots of eggs today. Babies are doing well. Getting ready to set another hatch.

Rancher--safe travels.

Lynzi--all depends on your hens. I have a couple of fierce broodys who make even the roosters pause and look first before entering the coop gingerly to see whats going on. On the other hand, I have one who had her chicks stolen by her sister. I felt bad for her.

As far as my understanding goes, chickenstock is open to everyone. I am looking forward to meeting everyone.

Too bad people couldnt be treated like they treat their animals. Would solve a lot of problems.

I am so sorry. I hope that your losses are over. I used to have turkeys and had them become under the weather and was advised to give them cayenne pepper. Everyone lived and I don't know the cause or the cure.

Sorry for your loss Hen, hope the others pull through and no cooties are brought in by the dumped birds.
Pulled a couple bantams out tonight so little girl could pet them and I could share pics.
First up, some exotic looking bantam, haven't seen any chicks like it yet online.
400

400

And the two smallest ones. Cottonball still looks to be a lavender.
400
