NY chicken lover!!!!

Sorry to everyone who has been having troubles.

I got home from work this afternoon to a NN chick in the incubator. It hatched a day early. The 2 hens in the upper coop are fertile and I'm setting more eggs this weekend.

Good question. "Hey Ray, did they shots go through the coon into the wall?" Ray's response? A shrug and "they were hollow points so I don't know". I guess I will find out when I clean the coop, won't I? LOL But even if they did, it will be a much smaller hole than a shotgun slug would have made.

Well If there is a hole make sure you plug them up. I had something chew through mine. I think a mouse but still I had to replace that part of the floor. The only thing I knew was under there was the rabbit. Haven't seen it this year. Perhaps it go to/too/two wet.

I agree. I am sorry for your loss. It's one thing to take a bird for food but to lose one to illness is hard.

My last tom, my big, gorgeous pride and joy, died today. I'm heartbroken. All three of my beautiful boys are gone.

I have eight hens left. I hope they don't succumb to whatever hellish mess this is. At least it's a species-specific mess - my chooks and duckehs are unaffected.

Heni,

So, so sorry that the last of your toms succumbed, and one that had been so big and healthy until this struck. How awful. I also hope your hens manage to elude whatever nasty thing it is. I'm also watchful of my remaining 6 birds; don't feel like it's OK to relax any time soon. I've got 2 more days of Corid left to treat them with. Even then, I'm going to be nervous...

Take care.

well I just got a call at work from the DW, she found a pile of feathers and ripped up fencing on my small coop that had 2 old girls in it. i got these 2 hens a couple years ago from mennonites, they had scaly leg mites so i never let them integrate with the big coop. looks like i might not be boiling any sap today, gotta make sure my big coop is secure, set traps, load gun and set up my trail cam, i think it might be raccoon or possum, whatever it was, it had to climb up on top of the run as that was where the new hole was. i'll probably take a walk thru the swamp to look for more evidence. darn predators! RIP to my two old hens

Oh, that really stinks. I'm sorry to hear this... Seems plenty of us have been experiencing some losses to our flocks, whether from illness or predators. The critters are getting active: have seen coons and opossums toddling about and have smelled skunks on a few occasions.

Just reading through & catching up - sorry for everyone's losses, it's a rough start to the season.

On the home front here, I can report that the 'new girls' are doing well, growing like the proverbial weeds! Even traumatized Henrietta, she's enjoying her new sisters - they race around the brooder like lunatics. Not quite so scared when I approach now...
The mud gets deeper by the day. Had to put the Beagles in the shower tonight, they were happy but filthy. Now they're clean and not so happy

. Started to get busy with the chainsaw, need to stack up the wood ready for the winter ahead! We burned almost all of our reserve during this miserable, cold winter - wish my back would last as long as my intentions............hope everybody has a good weekend,

Well I'm officially getting eggs from my blue Orp. I'm contemplating setting some aside to see what I get. I don't think it will be that hard to sell blue or splash orpington chicks. I already have a few interested in hatching eggs. I just want to see what the hatch rate is like if I do start selling them. They are smaller than Stella's eggs, hers are on the end and the blue orp's two eggs are in the middle:

Lynzi if the orp is just starting to lay her eggs they will get bigger as she gets older. I've seen it in my hens. Mind you not a large amount bigger but they go from pullet size to large or xlarge in size
