Quote: I wouldn't mix up the colors. That is how people get odd things popping out. You have one hen that has copper hackles, so she could be bred with a black copper, but the others shouldn't, unless you are just making eggs and not breeding. Those of us breeding Birchen for APA standards, the biggest problem is having cream or red come out in the birds as it is. Pur Silver birchen is very hard because of the mixing with the black copper.

Ain't that the truth. Then we have to undo the mess they've created. Though I do think type is more important. Which makes me wonder are the Marans excepted by the APA?

I also want to add that I have the "French" variety. Feathered legs and feet. So I'm selecting for those too. I do let people know that what I give up is NOT to my liking for a Birchen.

Now if anyone is interested in Birchens Green Fire will ship as few as 6 chicks and I'd be willing to go in on an order from them. You could get something else but I'd be ordering 2 Birchen chicks.

Quote: Only 3 varieties are accepted by the APA, Black Copper, Wheaten and White. I'm working on the Birchen, buts it hard to get the silver to come out. I have a lot of birchen chicks hatched, no one showing silver hackles yet...fingers crossed though that they start to come out.
And don't forget, if they don't lay a #4 on the Marans egg chart, they aren't a Marans...egg color is important.

Not working on a color type -this is for a good and hardy dual purpose bird for me only to eat - and for me to sell very dark eggs.

Personally - I like the type and the feathered feet. I like their personality. I don't have any intention of "calling" the birds I have anything :)

That is no matter what I do or don't mix them in with. I toyed with showing my millie d'uccles - as they are so cute it hurt ... but then don't really want to take them to a big gathering and risk any diseases.

So thanks for the warning - but for my purposes - not needed. I do think others who will be selling a BCM or a Birchen - should be very concerned with the issues you brought up.

So I was just checking on my chicks and a few of them were burying themselves in the pine chips with just their heads sticking out. What does this mean? They are only 2 weeks old

It means they found something fun to do with pine chips.   And that you should check the temp in the brooder and make sure it is 90 degrees in some part of it so they can warm up if they are cold.

yea make sure they are not shivering-thats bad. temp guns are pretty good at spot checking warmth gradients-good luck!
