NY chicken lover!!!!

the two survivors made it through the night - I have to admit I was cold and grumpy and did NOT put them in their new little coop  (near the main coop but still isolated)  I kept them in the house all night!!!  ha ha ha ha

I was just so freaking sick of being cold and having cold hands - and it is supposed to be in the mid 30 today with no wind ...   so once I have my morning joe - I'm going to get the little coop door shoveled out and put them in their new home.

Say - has anyone heard from Brella ?  Wasn't she nearing a move?   What a cold time to move.

Is it really that cold near you still?? It's been so nice here. The snow has melted and everything. I'm gonna be one PO'ed gal the day I wake up and the temp is under 30 again! It was up and over 40 yesterday, I think Sunday it reached 50.

Morning All,
Lost an egg in the incu yesterday. Not sure why it stopped but all that was there was a big black dot, no movement, no veins. Weird. So I'm down to a lavender egg and a splash egg.

Yep - yesterday it was in the low 20's and had a brisk wind with mist and moisture in the air.... far worse than some days in the teens. And stayed that way until 3:00 - no slow warm up.

I went over the mountain to get these refugees ... and it was as cold at the top as my place - so it was a back swirl of some weather front - as it is usually 10 degrees colder on the mountain - but not yesterday. ARGH ... and this morning it is still in the upper 20's - but all indications are it will go up quick.

Lynzi it is in the 30's or below here every night and I still have tons of snow no grass poking out any where I can at least see the stone in the driveways after the rain the other day but that is also because he keeps the driveways plowed all winter so not as much snow in them to melt. My snow in my backyard is still at least 4 ft deep. This is one of the reasons I am gonna go visit my friend in NC this summer if I like it we are probably going to move down there or Tennessee she lives on the border. I am so sick of all this cold and snow.

I bought this feed last year while most of my birds were going thru a molt, helped a lot! I'm thinking of picking up another bag seeing as how Gru is going thru another molt for some reason. I thought I purchased a 50# bag, I'll have to look when I pick up a bag from Tully Hardware.
I was buying Agway Egg Producer pellets with 18% and quite frankly a molt was not a big thing. Perhaps it's just not what I expect. Bald chickens, feathers everywhere. Of course I don't keep production birds so that might be it.

Now I just buy the 18% in the fall and winter months.

Now I am leaving tomorrow but when I come back I intend to be hathcing and if I get some Marans pullets you can have a couple of the original hens. They're not marked like the should be but they are good layers all year long. I have to say I can count on egg even in the coldest months.

I really should get a Sussex rooster for this hen of mine. She is a great layer too.

But I have CR eggs coming and my focus will be on those and my Delawares.

so I have 4 eggs (day 24) that have done nothing. 2 I think are Jersey Giant and the other two look like they came from the same hen (possibly my NN) do you think there is something going on with my hen(s) that its a genetic thing? or just chance? they developed good. they still looked good at lock down. I had the last egg that piped just hatched this am. I had 14 in, so 10 hatched.

Rancher - thanks ! I'd love some Marans hens - I went in with Pyxis on some from a nice strain - and I got two lovely roos ! ha ha ha

So I only have 2 Marans hens right now - but I want basically my eggs for sale to be Marans (deep brown) and blue layers ... :) With the type pretty big so I can eat the extra roos. My Marans Roos are HUGE - yum yum :)

What kind have you got? Mine are Birchens but I have no doubt a cross with a Copper wouldn't hurt as these have copper in there somewhere. My original hens have no Birchen coloring at all, but the new ones do. Not as much as I'd like though.

I have two Cucko mixed with Black Copper hens and 2 pure BC roos - I like the dark egg - but I don't need it to be the darkest of the dark. I also like the physical make-up of the breed, beyond color.
