NY chicken lover!!!!

crazy - I would take you up on the offer if I weren't going away. I've some frizzles laying I'd like to hatch.

Went to CM and TSC for feed. Want to make sure DW has plenty. My DD who was going to help broke or fractured here foot and with two small kids she'll be no help.

Anyhow some roads are flooded and closed. TSC still has Ducks and Chicks. Which surprises me. Picked up the new copy of Practical Poultry. Would have been upset if I had missed it.
I'm fighting a cold I think I picked up from Prince Donovan. I've stuff to do but need to rest so I can get well. Ugh!

I think they break because the get so hot the glass and metal melt.

I would put your thermometers at chick head level and raise it as they grow. Mine are a good 1' to 2' high now.

As for spring it's here just not warm enough to do the cleaning. What a mess out there.

Yes, that is exactly what it looks like. The base metal and glass just completely separated from each other.

I ended up finding some pics on my computer and sent them to her.

Hope you get your splash Lynizi! I have no idea what several of mine are now they are changing colors a little. The buff and the white are all I am sure of. I think I might have a frizzle or two - or they having a bad hair day at any rate cute little stinkers!

Jenny, Glad you are enjoying the Silkies. They are MORE than chickens to us. Can't wait to get the eggs. My husband had two knees replaced. He was on the National Ski Patrol and did a lot of "FAST" skiing.

We are now going to Physical Therapy and he is unable to drive. We have a Doctor's appointment on Thursday and he MAY get his driving permission. SO looking forward to
meeting Jeff and start our first hatch.

We don't even know how to see if the eggs are fertile. Lots of learning to do. We have a tiny
Briena sp? Should be an adventure. ENJOY. Remember to post photos as your Silkies grow.
There are some Silkie lovers on this thread. Regards, Aria

Wow sounds like lots of changes in your house. Your Brinsea incubator will make things a breeze. I'm eyeing the Brinsea Ecoglow brooder unit to avoid using the heat lamps. Seems much safer all the way around.

The world of medicine is doing wonders these days with hips and knees. Glad your hubby got some new ones and may the rehab go fast and smooth!

I can imagine this is culture shock to him being so immobile for the time being.

Here is a couple little guys. They are doing really well and everyone of them has five toes except one..

This one looks to be getting a little beard. This one has 4 toes on one foot five on the other.
I didn't know some breeds had four and five toes.. very interesting! Love these little guys.

Well - a friend of Bakin-in-the-rain had a weasel attack - and then break into the garage to attack the ones left !

With total destruction and an insecure garage .... I am now the refuge of a Favorelle roo and dominique hen ....

So far they are quiet and doing fine- eating and lightly pecking around. Darn weasels !!!!

At least I will get some pure favorelles now - but that wasn't in my long term plan .... it's that chicken math again .... I must have missed carrying a one somewhere ......

My Little Peepers Laid an egg today! She laid one I think last fall, but nothing since so this is really like her first eggs! She is my bantam D'Uccle. She is just so little and cute. She had been looking like she might be ready, and I guess that today was the day. I'm sure that it has to be hers it is pretty tiny. That is the smallest LF egg that I got today and the lighter egg is smaller than that. I had already collected eggs this afternoon and it wasn't there. (7 out of my 9 already laying). The kids and I went out to try to shovel a river to divert the water that was pooling in the run.... and I checked and there it was! Now I have my first real bantam egg and a chicken run with a river and a small pond. The ducks at least love it. I think that they are the only ones that does! I can't wait till everything is dried up! I'll have to crack it open later to see if it is fertile. Those I may have to try to hatch. I thought that I saw my speckled Sussex roo hopping off of her the other day. Wonder what that combo will give me?

Just went out to close the gate on the run and I checked the coop like usual. There were 2 more eggs in the nest. So that brings the total to 10 for 10! Pretty cool...Now just waiting on my frizzle hen to start laying. I guess I should start to add her.... so 10 out of 11... Now if I could figure out how to get rid of all the eggs...

I just saw one yesterday! I knew that the neighbor had seen them around over at her house, but not here. I had to explain to DD that yes they are cute just like the foxes, but that they are chicken killing machines!!! I called DH and told him that we have them. Time to go buy those traps we had been talking about... And a gun.

Google "weasel traps" a simple rat trap set up will deal with them permanently.

Jenny Adorable. One thing I DID know ....real Silkies have 5 toes. Now I just need to learn to tell ....an egg is fertile. We thought during this waiting time (hubby healing) we would our new incubator with our Silkie Eggs.

We have five in an egg carton in our Laundry room. Waiting to collect 2 more. We will practice
on our eggs and learn how to incubate-hatch. Then when we get Jeff's eggs ...we will have some good or bad experiences. We are tilting the egg carton 2 times daily. And after 5 days
we will candle. Trial and error. Goggled a lot of stuff and spoke to Lindsay and got some tips.

Lindsay told us to crack our eggs and see if they have a bullseye. Then see where the eggs came from (hen) and assume her eggs are fertile. That did NOT seem to be the best for us.
We are just going to keep 7 eggs ...tip carton 2x daily and then candle. That makes more sense for us. We will look for "bullseye or veins" in the eggs.

Of course if you have any tips ...pass them on. We want Silkie Chicks like yours. ha ha. And
we need to experiment with our incubator. Regards, Aria
