NY chicken lover!!!!

Yikes, Rancher, maybe you should go to the movies and see Noah. Looks like you may need an ark soon.

Took my basement chickens, Tapistry, the bald one, and Earl of the pecked comb, up to the unfinished porch. There were a ton of dead flies on the floor, so I thought they could earn their keep by helping with the cleaning. I took the opportunity to clean and treat Earls comb, and checked his feet. He seems to have a lump about 3/4 of an inch in diameter behind his spur. It is hard. I thought of bumble foot, but that didn't sound like this, since this is so hard and not on the pad of the foot, but on the back of his leg. I cleaned it with Epsom salts and tried to soak it in Epsom salts a bit later, but while he was very well mannered, he refused to stand in that water. I put honey on his comb and his leg bump.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

You got pics/

Hoping you all can see the size difference in Stella and her daughter, the blue hen.

Quote: The resulting color will be blue, whether its a light blue or dark blue, its anyones guess. Self blue in silkies looks light, but in Orpingtons is a medium blue, at least mine are. You could get splash also, bue self blue has the same recessive genes, splash has a dominant & recessive gene. At this point I'm confused....LOL

Welcome ! Chicks are so fun...
Im a chick Magnet
as they get more used to you ...they will fly up to you ..

A human roost! How cute!

So Sorry you lost the boys ...lets hope you can halt the scourge . Do turkey lay eggs as often as chickens ?
You might have some fertile eggs from the boys still ?

TOB - So Sorry.. you lost your hen ..
it is hard to tell with chickens ...if they are sick .
I lost a Roo yesterday ..he was having trouble breathing ..no other symptoms .
He was at that 8- 9 month old age when the chickens die from birth defects.

Thanks, Gramma. I wish I could have caught it sooner, but now at least I know what to look for. Others seem to be doing fine, so far. One more day of treatment on the Corid, and I've started electrolytes (Save-a-Chick) in everyone's water. My hen was approx 11 months old. I'm pretty sure it was coccidiosis, but I of course am not 100% sure. She did have most of the symptoms.

Thanks, I have to say, I know I have the Orps around for eggs and my main focus is the silkies this year, but I am really proud of myself for hatching out such a nice looking Orpington! Lol even if she was the only Orp egg to hatch out of everything I tried hatching last summer. Everytime I look at her I can't help but think how stunning she is. :)

I don't know about yours, but our Lavender Orp is just the most gentle soul -- she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. I've never seen her peck at anyone else in the flock, and of all my birds, she takes food from my hand the most delicately (that is without ripping up my skin in the process, lol!) ... Anyway, we love or "Chumley" and I love the big, "cushiony" look of the Orps. I think they are the Victorian Ladies of the poultry world.

Quote: Hard to see, but stella is the lav orp, right? And the daughter is out of what roo? she is blue laced, but still blue. Most breeds when they say the variety is "blue" it has lacing, without lacing, its most likely "self blue". Does that make sense? Self blue to self blue produce self blue aka lavender, but bred to a normal laced blue, produce laced blue, which is the norm.
