I was just looking that up. I think that is the plan! Thanks for the help!

Jenny Adorable. One thing I DID know ....real Silkies have 5 toes. Now I just need to learn to tell ....an egg is fertile. We thought during this waiting time (hubby healing) we would our new incubator with our Silkie Eggs.

We have five in an egg carton in our Laundry room. Waiting to collect 2 more. We will practice
on our eggs and learn how to incubate-hatch. Then when we get Jeff's eggs ...we will have some good or bad experiences. We are tilting the egg carton 2 times daily. And after 5 days
we will candle. Trial and error. Goggled a lot of stuff and spoke to Lindsay and got some tips.

Lindsay told us to crack our eggs and see if they have a bullseye. Then see where the eggs came from (hen) and assume her eggs are fertile. That did NOT seem to be the best for us.
We are just going to keep 7 eggs ...tip carton 2x daily and then candle. That makes more sense for us. We will look for "bullseye or veins" in the eggs.

Of course if you have any tips ...pass them on. We want Silkie Chicks like yours. ha ha. And
we need to experiment with our incubator. Regards, Aria
Aria,
If you're getting eggs daily now from some of your hens, the only reason I recommended cracking *some* open and checking for the bullseye is so that you don't try hatching batch after batch and not only end up wasting eggs but getting disappointed and wondering why they are not developing. If you crack the earliest one layed and see a bullseye at least you'll know the others have a good chance at being fertile and yes by all means try hatching the rest of those of those eggs. But unless you see that bullseye it could be a lot of trial and error before hatching any at all. You can't candle an egg to check for fertility. So if you stick all 7 in your incubator, and none develop when you candle on day 5 say, you end up throwing all 7 out and starting all over again. Just saying because I've been thru it before.

Well I found the jug in the Marans coop chewed open so I know a squirrel was in there. I set both traps on the tree and put another on the fence baited with cheese. I'll be here tomorrow so we shall see.

Anyone here know about Nutrena Feather Fixer? I got some $2 off coupons and that was all that CM had. TSC doesn't carry it. It says on the bag that it has "mite protection"tm. What is that.

My concern is that I have a friend who can only eat my eggs and I don't want to mess that up by feeding them something that might make him sick. He cannot eat store eggs.

It is higher protein than the Egg Layer and Hearty Hen, but is also only a 40# bag. That is as much as I know.

Yes I did notice the 40# but with the coupon it's $10 and I thought what the heck. I just mix it in with my regular feed. I wish prices would come down. But then I might keep more birds and that wouldn't help, now would it?

Country Max doesn't advertise/display the brands the sell. Not good at marketing their products.

I bought this feed last year while most of my birds were going thru a molt, helped a lot! I'm thinking of picking up another bag seeing as how Gru is going thru another molt for some reason. I thought I purchased a 50# bag, I'll have to look when I pick up a bag from Tully Hardware.

Evening all. Long work days and we have mud up to my ankles. Thank goodness for my muck boots. I did manage to get the temporary cage set up for Junior and I put one of the girls in with him. He is happy to be outside with a girl. I put a dog crate in there for them to use if its too windy and they sleep in there at night. I pull out the crate, close the door and then lock it into the front of Legolas coop. Better to be safe than sorry. The terrorists are picking up laying. Eating more too.

Rancher--I wouldnt mess with their feed is he is able to eat your eggs. I know I had issues eating my own eggs when I tried diferent feeds, especially the agway higher protein one. I had serious allergic reactions to those eggs. Now that I have them on the gmo free feed, I can eat eggs again.

Aria--what incubator do you have? It would be advisable to crack and egg and see if you have a bullseye unless you have actually seen your roo mating with the girls. I have found that it is better to set more silkie eggs than you want to hatch because sometimes you get to the end and dont get what you want for a hatch. Just my experience. I load for bear and prepare for the worst. Never have a problem finding homes for the silkies.

Time for bed. Later all.

Well - a friend of Bakin-in-the-rain had a weasel attack - and then break into the garage to attack the ones left !

With total destruction and an insecure garage .... I am now the refuge of a Favorelle roo and dominique hen ....

So far they are quiet and doing fine- eating and lightly pecking around. Darn weasels !!!!

At least I will get some pure favorelles now - but that wasn't in my long term plan .... it's that chicken math again .... I must have missed carrying a one somewhere ......

Well that sucks!! weasels are rotten and very crafty. You are a good friend to help out with the survivors.

the two survivors made it through the night - I have to admit I was cold and grumpy and did NOT put them in their new little coop (near the main coop but still isolated) I kept them in the house all night!!! ha ha ha ha

I was just so freaking sick of being cold and having cold hands - and it is supposed to be in the mid 30 today with no wind ... so once I have my morning joe - I'm going to get the little coop door shoveled out and put them in their new home.

Say - has anyone heard from Brella ? Wasn't she nearing a move? What a cold time to move.
