NY chicken lover!!!!

Wait, what kind of bird is this again? Are they really tiny? Last summer, we had this teeny tiny bird that looked just like that one, hanging out in one of our trees...it was a baby, and its parents were squawking up a storm higher up in the tree. Well we found it at the base of the tree, and because we didn't want our very interested dog to get it, we carefully placed him on a low branch, where he perched for quite some time. Next thing I knew, he was perched next to my shoulder while I was lying on the hammock which was attached to that tree.

He hung around for some time, his parents making quite the racket, until eventually, he flew off into the shrubby part of our property. I always wondered what kind of bird it was.

Hi Sweetpea,

Eastern Phoebes are on the small side -- bigger than your typical sparrow, though, and kind of roundish. They have a tendency to pump their tail while they're perched and they say their own name in a scratchy call, "Pheee-beee!" They are bug eating machines. If your little guy was a phoebe, he probably didn't fall out of a tree top nest, but more likely had fledged out of the mud-cup nest and just hadn't graduated to being a proficient flyer yet! Sounds like it imprinted on you, lol! There are different kind of relatives to the Phoebe, that are in the same family of "flycatchers." So it's not certain yours was a Phoebe, but if you want to listen to a little sound clip of what they sound like, check out the following link and click on the sound byte.

We have Phoebes and peewees, and I mix them up. But some have been here for a little bit, and
I am honored they have chosen to live here and eat our flies. I encourage them to invite their friends over to help.

Those girls seemed to want to change the contour of that bed, and add vertical texture to the beds.

Today I got the electric fence hooked up and while I was trying to test it with the dinky little tester they give you, one of the girls tested it for me. Yup, it works.

No, the mystery continues. This little guy and his parents (which were hanging around calling to him) were only a bit bigger than a hummingbird. Tiny. I can't remember the sound of their call either. They were about that coloring though...minus the crest on top.

Stony--Have you grilled anything good being the weather has warmed up? Building anything fun? That camper you built is awesome! My DH is rebuilding a couple walls in our kitchen. We're using tongue and groove pine. I love the knots in the wood. There are going to be 2 built in shelves and a chest for hats n things beneath the coat hooks.

I spent some time outside with my 4 year old today. It's so nice to have some nice weather and a napping baby.
